Book excerpt: Martin Luther's most comprehensive work on justification by faith, his commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians is translated and edited from the Latin into a lively style, paralleling his spoken lectures. Combined with the passion and faith expressed in these lectures, the biblical foundation for the crucial doctrine of justification is underscored and expressed to a new audience. The commentary is also a historical document, a recording of a professor in a classroom in 1531 from July to December of that year, which expresses the Reformer's commitment to the good news of Jesus' death in the sinner's place, challenging the reader/hearer to compare St. Paul's theology with what he/she hears in the church today.

Book excerpt: Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians (1535) By Martin Luther Translated by Theodore Graebner St. Paul wrote this epistle because, after his departure from the Galatian churches, Jewish-Christian fanatics moved in, who perverted Paul's Gospel of man's free justification by faith in Christ Jesus. The world bears the Gospel a grudge because the Gospel condemns the religious wisdom of the world. Jealous for its own religious views, the world in turn charges the Gospel with being a subversive and licentious doctrine, offensive to God and man, a doctrine to be persecuted as the worst plague on earth. As a result we have this paradoxical situation: The Gospel supplies the world with the salvation of Jesus Christ, peace of conscience, and every blessing. Just for that the world abhors the Gospel. These Jewish-Christian fanatics who pushed themselves into the Galatian churches after Paul's departure, boasted that they were the descendants of Abraham, true ministers of Christ, having been trained by the apostles themselves, that they were able to perform miracles. In every way they sought to undermine the authority of St. Paul. They said to the Galatians: "You have no right to think highly of Paul. He was the last to turn to Christ. But we have seen Christ. We heard Him preach. Paul came later and is beneath us. It is possible for us to be in error--we who have received the Holy Ghost? Paul stands alone. He has not seen Christ, nor has he had much contact with the other apostles. Indeed, he persecuted the Church of Christ for a long time."

Luther taught that salvation and subsequently eternity in heaven is not earned by good deeds but is received only as a free gift of God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ as redeemer from sin and subsequently eternity in hell. His theology challenged the authority and office of the Pope by teaching that the Bible is the only source of divinely revealed knowledge from God and opposed sacerdotalism by considering all baptized Christians to be a holy priesthood. Those who identify with these, and all of Luther's wider teachings, are called Lutherans even though Luther insisted on Christian as the only acceptable name for individuals who professed Christ. Today, Lutheranism constitutes a major branch of Protestantism and overall Christianity with some 80 million adherents.

The work was treasured by Martin Luther, the 15th century German priest, scholar, and father of the Protestant Reformation. For this reason, Luther delivered lectures on the "Epistle to the Galatians" in 1531 and published those lectures in 1535. The resulting "Commentary on Galatians" by Luther is widely regarded as one of the most important commentaries ever written on Christian faith and love. Deeply personal and at least in part autobiographical, Luther explains why St. Paul's "Epistle to the Galatians" is so important and meaningful to both him and to the Christian faith. Paul's "Epistle" and Luther's "Commentary" have assured countless Christians of the superiority of the Bible over human reason, the perfection of Christ's sacrifice and atonement through his death, and the essential doctrine of justification through faith alone as the foundation for all Christians. Moving and passionate, Luther expresses the strength and comfort that he has found in this faith. This masterpiece continues to remain as inspiring and important to Christians today in understanding their faith as it has been for the last five hundred years. Presented here is the condensed translation by Theodore Graebner. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Book excerpt: Martin Luther's "Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians" is a foundational work that has left an unmistakable effect on the landscape of Christian theology. This work, published in 1535, is a thorough examination of the biblical Epistle to the Galatians, written by the apostle Paul. Martin Luther, the Protestant Reformation's emblematic figure, provides readers with a comprehensive and significant exegesis of this New Testament epistle. The fundamental focus of Luther's essay is justification by faith alone, a central principle of Protestant theology. Luther fiercely contends for the supremacy of faith in Christ as the way of salvation, opposing Roman Catholic Church beliefs and practices. Beyond its theological relevance, Luther's remark reflects his personal hardships and profound devotion to church reform. His writing reflects a strong commitment to provide clarity and realism to issues of faith and redemption. "Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians" is a classic text in Christian theology. Martin Luther became pastor of the congregation at Wittenberg in 1515. He used this opportunity to enlighten his congregation on faith and works. Luther challenged the Pope by saying that the Bible was the ultimate authority not the Pope. Luther preached his conviction that faith alone not good works is our salvation. Good works are special only if they accompany faith. Good works are of value when they come from God. Of all of Luther's writings he felt that this was his favorite. Luther said that Paul's letters influences his Protestantism more than any other part of the Bible.
