Book excerpt: Excerpt from Martin B. Anderson, LL. D: A Biography "There may be two reasons for writing a man's biography. His public service may have been of so valuable a kind as to create a public demand for the details of his history. Or, his private character may have been of so rare an order as to add the materials of inspiration to the public ideals." So writes Elizabeth Stuart Phelps in the opening sentences of her father's memoir. The words seem very fitting ones with which to preface the life of President Anderson. Both reasons given apply to him. His public service was of a supreme order. For the cause of education, for his country in her hour of peril, for the generation of men among whom he lived, for the young men whose very souls he dominated, he rendered a service which words can hint, but whose story they can never tell. And his private character was just as conspicuous. Indomitable in will, inflexible in integrity, self-forgetful in purpose, broad in sympathies, kingly in intellect, docile in spirit, unsullied in life, in himself as well as in his service he is more than worthy of such remembrance as a work like this can give. There is another reason. As is repeatedly said in these pages, Dr. Anderson's students were his sons. For them he had many a parental pang, and they in their turn carry him in their hearts. They admired, they revered, they loved him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers and Addresses of Martin B. Anderson, LL. D, Vol. 2 N this day of revolutions, when a total recon struction of human society and government is fiercely called for by reformers who act on the assumption that there has been no God in the past, and that whatever is is necessarily wrong, it may be well for us to turn our attention to those laws of growth by which the Supreme Being indicates his will in the affairs of nations. The experience of the past in history is but the revelation of God's will. Whatever system of polity is constructed in bold disregard of the normal development of the political life of a given nation contains within itself the germs of disorder and decay. Book Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book Abraham Lincoln written by Michael Burlingame and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 2028 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first multi-volume biography of Abraham Lincoln to be published in decades, Lincoln scholar Michael Burlingame offers a fresh look at the life of one of America's greatest presidents. Incorporating the field notes of earlier biographers, along with decades of research in multiple manuscript archives and long-neglected newspapers, this remarkable work will both alter and reinforce current understanding of America's sixteenth president. Volume 1 covers Lincoln's early childhood, his experiences as a farm boy in Indiana and Illinois, his legal training, and the political ambition that led to a term in Congress in the 1840s. In volume 2, Burlingame examines Lincoln's life during his presidency and the Civil War, narrating in fascinating detail the crisis over Fort Sumter and Lincoln's own battles with relentless office seekers, hostile newspaper editors, and incompetent field commanders. Burlingame also offers new interpretations of Lincoln's private life, discussing his marriage to Mary Todd and the untimely deaths of two sons to disease. But through it all—his difficult childhood, his contentious political career, a fratricidal war, and tragic personal losses—Lincoln preserved a keen sense of humor and acquired a psychological maturity that proved to be the North's most valuable asset in winning the Civil War. Published to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth, this landmark publication establishes Burlingame as the most assiduous Lincoln biographer of recent memory and brings Lincoln alive to modern readers as never before.
