  • Author : Martin Daly
  • Publisher : Routledge

  • ISBN : 135151525X
  • Pages : 676 pages

Download or read book Homicide written by Martin Daly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human race spends a disproportionate amount of attention, money, and expertise in solving, trying, and reporting homicides, as compared to other social problems. The public avidly consumes accounts of real-life homicide cases, and murder fiction is more popular still. Nevertheless, we have only the most rudimentary scientific understanding of who is likely to kill whom and why. Martin Daly and Margo Wilson apply contemporary evolutionary theory to analysis of human motives and perceptions of self-interest, considering where and why individual interests conflict, using well-documented murder cases. This book attempts to understand normal social motives in murder as products of the process of evolution by natural selection. They note that the implications for psychology are many and profound, touching on such matters as parental affection and rejection, sibling rivalry, sex differences in interests and inclinations, social comparison and achievement motives, our sense of justice, lifespan developmental changes in attitudes, and the phenomenology of the self. This is the first volume of its kind to analyze homicides in the light of a theory of interpersonal conflict. Before this study, no one had compared an observed distribution of victim-killer relationships to "expected" distribution, nor asked about the patterns of killer-victim age disparities in familial killings. This evolutionary psychological approach affords a deeper view and understanding of homicidal violence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned educator Christine King Farris, older sister of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., joins with celebrated illustrator Chris Soentpiet to tell this inspirational story of how one boyhood experience inspired a movement. Mother Dear, one day I'm going to turn this world upside down. Long before he became a world-famous dreamer, Martin Luther King Jr. was a little boy who played jokes and practiced the piano and made friends without considering race. But growing up in the segregated south of the 1930s taught young Martin a bitter lesson--little white children and little black children were not to play with one another. Martin decided then and there that something had to be done. And so he began the journey that would change the course of American history.

Book Human Resources

  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book Human Resources written by Margot Martin and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel Human Resources by Margot Martin, released in early December 2020 in time for holiday gift giving, is set in the worlds of TV broadcasting and pro baseball in the 80's and early 90's in NYC and LA. As a 30 year leadership executive in broadcast, Margot Martin knows her world. In the vein of The Firm which exposed how legal firms operate and Wolf of Wall Street that exposed the vagaries of the big brokerages, the majority of this carefully crafted novel delves into the reality of life inside a major market TV station in LA during 1994. As the book jacket so aptly depicts, the story is about a manipulative and controlling boss who has zero boundaries in his quest for dominance of all in his domain. At the center of this blistering indictment of power gone awry is a spinning out of control love triangle between an black LA Dodger All Star center fielder, a stunning white female reporter who is his fiancée and the handsome late news anchor who falls madly in love with her and risks everything to have her. As their relationship becomes public the fury of the general manager knows no bounds. Lives are lost. Lives are ruined. And nothing will ever be the same again. This novel is not only a wild and very emotional rollercoaster of a ride but a character study of the abuse of power and ivory tower racism and sexism that still exists today. Very relevant to all going on in our world today.

Book Margot s Memoir Surviving Hitler and Stalin

Download or read book Margot s Memoir Surviving Hitler and Stalin written by Margot Richens and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margot Richens grew up in Nazi Germany. In school she learned obedience and self-repression. Her table grace: “Fold your hands, bow your head, and thank the Fuehrer for your bread.” She belonged to the Hitler Youth, and she sold blue advent candles for Hitler. During the war, she survived the bombing and escaped the raping of two million females as Germany collapsed. Then Margot speaks of infestations of lice and scabies, of no heat and stealing coal, of root canals without anesthesia, of eating dogs, even of cannibalism. She speaks of refugee camps and deportations to Russia. Every male seemed a predator, and Communist oppression replaced Nazi oppression as the Soviets “liberated everything dear to us.” Then came her harrowing escape westward. Through all the terror, the love for her mother runs through her memoir like a golden thread—the saving uplift to the benumbing cruelties of the Nazis and Soviets, the belittling unkindness of her father, and the uncaring thoughtlessness of the alcoholic, Canadian soldier she married. In 1955 the newly-weds arrived in Canada where Margot, bearing the weight of past and present, began her search for self-expression and her own light...
