Download or read book Martial Arts Applications in Higher Education written by Charles Spring and published by Protectics Limited. This book was released on 2015-08-24 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discussion on the value of martial arts in the educational system and how, arguably, it can be an excellent example of lifelong learning for all. The concept of this book evolved from the author's experiences in developing and establishing higher education programmes at the University of Derby Buxton between the years 2004 and 2010. The book is aimed at academics, martial artists, and anyone interested in learning and melding 'real world' pursuits with methodical and robust teaching to improve a professional approach to those pursuits. It is an exploration of programmes of study that are based in sound educational concepts, but with a bias towards the study of martial arts at undergraduate and postgraduate level. This book includes an assessment of learning and teaching within the programmes using case studies to emphasise key points. A definition of the term 'martial arts' and consideration of their history. Educational theories, the process of research, validation of the programmes, assessing the use of experiential learning, professionalism within the area of teaching and coaching practice, and pedagogy and benchmarking of standards.

Book Martial Arts Studies

Download or read book Martial Arts Studies written by Paul Bowman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-04-09 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phrase “martial arts studies” is increasingly circulating as a term to describe a new field of interest. But many academic fields including history, philosophy, anthropology, and Area studies already engage with martial arts in their own particular way. Therefore, is there really such a thing as a unique field of martial arts studies? Martial Arts Studies is the first book to engage directly with these questions. It assesses the multiplicity and heterogeneity of possible approaches to martial arts studies, exploring orientations and limitations of existing approaches. It makes a case for constructing the field of martial arts studies in terms of key coordinates from post-structuralism, cultural studies, media studies, and post-colonialism. By using these anti-disciplinary approaches to disrupt the approaches of other disciplines, Martial Arts Studies proposes a field that both emerges out of and differs from its many disciplinary locations.

Book Defining Physical Education Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Defining Physical Education Routledge Revivals written by David Kirk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1992, David Kirk’s book analyses the public debate leading up to the 1987 General Election over the place and purpose of physical education in British schools. By locating this debate in a historical context, specifically in the period following the end of the Second World War, it attempts to illustrate how the meaning of school physical education and its aims, content and pedagogy were contested by a number of vying groups. It stresses the influence of the culture of postwar social reconstruction in shaping these groups’ ideas about physical education. Through this analysis, the book attempts to explain how physical education has been socially constructed during the postwar years and, more specifically, to suggest how the subject came to be used as a symbol of subversive, left wing values in the campaign leading to the 1987 election. In more general terms, the book provides a case study of the social construction of school knowledge. The book takes an original approach to the question of curriculum change in physical education, building on increasing interest in historical research in the field of curriculum studies. It adopts a social constructionist perspective, arguing that change occurs through the active involvement of competing groups in struggles over limited material and ideological (discursive) resources. It also draws on contemporary developments in social and cultural theory, particularly the concepts of discourse and ideological hegemony, to explain how the meaning of physical education has been constructed, and how particular definitions of the subject have become orthodoxes. The book presents new historical evidence from a period which had previously been neglected by researchers, despite the fact that 1945 marked a watershed in the development of the understanding and teaching of physical education in schools.

Book excerpt: A leading educational thinker argues that the American university is stuck in the past -- and shows how we can revolutionize it for our era of constant change Our current system of higher education dates to the period from 1865 to 1925. It was in those decades that the nation's new universities created grades and departments, majors and minors, all in an attempt to prepare young people for a world transformed by the telegraph and the Model T. As Cathy N. Davidson argues in The New Education, this approach to education is wholly unsuited to the era of the gig economy. From the Ivy League to community colleges, she introduces us to innovators who are remaking college for our own time by emphasizing student-centered learning that values creativity in the face of change above all. The New Education ultimately shows how we can teach students not only to survive but to thrive amid the challenges to come.

Book Deconstructing Martial Arts

Download or read book Deconstructing Martial Arts written by Paul Bowman and published by Cardiff University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the essence of martial arts? What is their place in or relationship with culture and society? Deconstructing Martial Arts analyses familiar issues and debates that arise in scholarly, practitioner and popular cultural discussions and treatments of martial arts and argues that martial arts are dynamic and variable constructs whose meanings and values regularly shift, mutate and transform, depending on the context. It argues that deconstructing martial arts is an invaluable approach to both the scholarly study of martial arts in culture and society and also to wider understandings of what and why martial arts are. Placing martial arts in relation to core questions and concerns of media and cultural studies around identity, value, orientalism, and embodiment, Deconstructing Martial Arts introduces and elaborates deconstruction as a rewarding method of cultural studies.
