They found a civilization so old and a mystery so powerful that it bridged the past to the present and created a whole new future for Mars. Angelina, a.k.a Nina, fulfilled a promise made by her ancestor millions of years ago in her quest to rescue Mars from a great disaster and make it livable again. It was a promise to a whole species that survived against great odds, a species who were forced to live underground for centuries. A promise that they fervently held on to for so long that it had become legend. Now Angelina, without knowing it, has come to bring hope and peace and a chance for the species to survive. The Martians will not forget. In the end, a promise is a promise, and only the strong will survive.

Book excerpt: A chance at being one of the first colonists on Mars is a dream come true for Lori Ridgway. But having to compete 24/7 in a globally broadcast reality show for a berth on the colony ship could prevent her from ever getting off the ground. Lori Ridgway is ready to give up everything for Mars. But when she entered the corporate-sponsored Mars Ho competition, she didn’t anticipate the chaotic, meat-market atmosphere that has candidates vying with each other on everything from creative seduction to life-and-death in the airlock. She certainly didn’t expect Mark Lauren—handsome, intelligent, principled, one of the strongest competitors in the Mars Ho biodome, and an infuriating stickler for the rules. As rivals and potential partners, Mark and Lori must each decide what they would do for a one-way trip to Mars. The same passion and stubbornness that force them to work together against the hazards of competition, dangerous drama, and an endless supply of unpalatable protein paste might be the very factors that keep them worlds apart. But Mars is calling, and a global audience is getting ready to vote. Mars Ho! is the first book in the spicy sci-fi Mars Adventure Romance Series. Start reading today!

Book Human Missions to Mars

Download or read book Human Missions to Mars written by Donald Rapp and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-31 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mission to send humans to explore the surface of Mars has been the ultimate goal of planetary exploration since the 1950s, when von Braun conjectured a flotilla of 10 interplanetary vessels carrying a crew of at least 70 humans. Since then, more than 1,000 studies were carried out on human missions to Mars, but after 60 years of study, we remain in the early planning stages. The second edition of this book now includes an annotated history of Mars mission studies, with quantitative data wherever possible. Retained from the first edition, Donald Rapp looks at human missions to Mars from an engineering perspective. He divides the mission into a number of stages: Earth’s surface to low-Earth orbit (LEO); departing from LEO toward Mars; Mars orbit insertion and entry, descent and landing; ascent from Mars; trans-Earth injection from Mars orbit and Earth return. For each segment, he analyzes requirements for candidate technologies. In this connection, he discusses the status and potential of a wide range of elements critical to a human Mars mission, including life support consumables, radiation effects and shielding, microgravity effects, abort options and mission safety, possible habitats on the Martian surface and aero-assisted orbit entry decent and landing. For any human mission to the Red Planet the possible utilization of any resources indigenous to Mars would be of great value and such possibilities, the use of indigenous resources is discussed at length. He also discusses the relationship of lunar exploratio n to Mars exploration. Detailed appendices describe the availability of solar energy on the Moon and Mars, and the potential for utilizing indigenous water on Mars. The second edition provides extensive updating and additions to the first edition, including many new figures and tables, and more than 70 new references, as of 2015.

Download or read book Destination Mars written by Rod Pyle and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2012-04-24 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the next decade, NASA, by itself and in collaboration with the European Space Agency, is planning a minimum of four separate missions to Mars. Clearly, exciting times are ahead for Mars exploration. This is an insider’s look into the amazing projects now being developed here and abroad to visit the legendary red planet. Drawing on his contacts at NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the author provides stunning insights into the history of Mars exploration and the difficulties and dangers of traveling there. After an entertaining survey of the human fascination with Mars over the centuries, the author offers an introduction to the geography, geology, and water processes of the planet. He then briefly describes the many successful missions by NASA and others to that distant world. But failure and frustration also get their due. As the author makes clear, going to Mars is not, and never will be, easy. Later in the book, he describes in detail what each upcoming mission will involve. In the second half of the book, he offers the reader a glimpse inside the world of Earth-based "Mars analogs," places on Earth where scientists are conducting research in hostile environments that are eerily "Martian." Finally, he constructs a probable scenario of a crewed expedition to Mars, so that readers can see how earlier robotic missions and human Earth simulations will fit together. All this is punctuated by numerous firsthand interviews with some of the finest Mars explorers of our day, including Stephen Squyres (Mars Exploration Rover), Bruce Murray (former director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory), and Peter Smith (chief of the Mars Phoenix Lander and the upcoming OSIRIS-REx missions). These stellar individuals give us an insider’s view of the difficulties and rewards of roaming the red planet. The author’s infectious enthusiasm and firsthand knowledge of the international space industry combine to make a uniquely appealing and accessible book about Mars.
