Download or read book Marrow Bone Road and Other Tales written by L. Gibbons and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of us avoid the issue of ghosts and the paranormal or reject the possibility because we fear them or because their existence would defy our perceptions of reality. But, what if ghosts exist and they fear the living? What if they possess a sense of humor and can be our friends? In fact, exactly who is haunting whom? This collection of short stories addresses those questions and more. "Marrow Bone Road" is the story of elderly Victor Hammond who senses threatening presences on the third and fourth floors of his future Victorian home while supervising its restoration. He ascribes his anxiety to his imagination - until they persist. On the final day of the tale, Victor learns the truth about the house and the presence that he feels on the top two floors. In "The Painted Lady of Marrow Bone Road," Dr. Jack Tilghman and his wife, Patti, need a larger home for their growing family. They find a sad Victorian house that Patti, an architect, falls in love with. But, Jack resists because the house reminds him of his childhood home and memories that he fought and buried long ago. He is forced to confront those memories and learn the truth about his childhood from an unexpected source. Together, the first two stories tell the tale of the same haunting event from two perspectives, one from the side of the living and the other from ... well, the other side. They also ask the question, "Exactly who is haunting whom?" In "East Of Here," we follow the investigation of an old, Federal style house on Virginia's Eastern Shore. The protagonist, a part-time paranormal investigator, is a staunch skeptic - until his own high-tech equipment, on which he bases his conclusions, proves him wrong. "Heart To Heart" is the story of a young woman, devastated by the death of her husband on the same day as her third miscarriage, until the impossible happens and her fondest wish is granted.

Book The Man Wolf and Other Tales Expanded Edition

Download or read book The Man Wolf and Other Tales Expanded Edition written by Erckmann-Chatrian and published by Wildside Press LLC. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wildside Press edition includes the complete 1876 text of the collection "The Man-Wolf and Other Tales" and adds four additional stories: "The Invisible Eye," "The Murderer's Violin," "The Spider of Guyana," and "The White and Black." Emile Erckmann (1822-99) and Louis Alexandre Chatrian (1826-90) began their writing partnership in the 1840s, and continued working together-producing plays, novels, and short stories-until the year before Chatrian's death. At the height of their powers they were known as 'the twins', and their works proved popular in England, where they began appearing (in translation) as early as 1865. After their deaths, however, they slipped into obscurity; and apart from the odd tale reprinted in anthologies, and the ill-fated collection of their weird tales published by Millington in 1981, their work has remained difficult to find. "The collaborators Erckmann-Chatrian enriched French literature with many spectral fancies like The Man-Wolf, in which a transmitted curse works toward its end in a traditional Gothic-castle setting." --H.P. Lovecraft "I should feel myself ungrateful if I did not pay a tribute to the supernatural tales of Erckmann-Chatrian. The blend of French with German in them, comparable to the French-Irish blend in Le Fanu, has produced some quite first-rate romances of this kind." -- M. R. James

Book Between Two Kingdoms

Download or read book Between Two Kingdoms written by Suleika Jaouad and published by Random House. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A searing, deeply moving memoir of illness and recovery that traces one young woman’s journey from diagnosis to remission to re-entry into “normal” life—from the author of the Life, Interrupted column in The New York Times ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, The Rumpus, She Reads, Library Journal, Booklist • “I was immersed for the whole ride and would follow Jaouad anywhere. . . . Her writing restores the moon, lights the way as we learn to endure the unknown.”—Chanel Miller, The New York Times Book Review “Beautifully crafted . . . affecting . . . a transformative read . . . Jaouad’s insights about the self, connectedness, uncertainty and time speak to all of us.”—The Washington Post In the summer after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was preparing, as they say in commencement speeches, to enter “the real world.” She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone. It started with an itch—first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. Next came the exhaustion, and the six-hour naps that only deepened her fatigue. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her twenty-third birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival. Just like that, the life she had imagined for herself had gone up in flames. By the time Jaouad flew home to New York, she had lost her job, her apartment, and her independence. She would spend much of the next four years in a hospital bed, fighting for her life and chronicling the saga in a column for The New York Times. When Jaouad finally walked out of the cancer ward—after countless rounds of chemo, a clinical trial, and a bone marrow transplant—she was, according to the doctors, cured. But as she would soon learn, a cure is not where the work of healing ends; it’s where it begins. She had spent the past 1,500 days in desperate pursuit of one goal—to survive. And now that she’d done so, she realized that she had no idea how to live. How would she reenter the world and live again? How could she reclaim what had been lost? Jaouad embarked—with her new best friend, Oscar, a scruffy terrier mutt—on a 100-day, 15,000-mile road trip across the country. She set out to meet some of the strangers who had written to her during her years in the hospital: a teenage girl in Florida also recovering from cancer; a teacher in California grieving the death of her son; a death-row inmate in Texas who’d spent his own years confined to a room. What she learned on this trip is that the divide between sick and well is porous, that the vast majority of us will travel back and forth between these realms throughout our lives. Between Two Kingdoms is a profound chronicle of survivorship and a fierce, tender, and inspiring exploration of what it means to begin again.

Book Stories from the Riverbank

Download or read book Stories from the Riverbank written by Clifford R. Roberts and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories From the Riverbank is a collection of published newspaper columns and personal writings that offer glimpses of the cultural, personal, and natural history of northern Michigan through the eyes of a lifelong resident. Clifford R. Roberts of Onaway shares stories and observations infused with local color and history from the Depression era to the present. Born and raised in sight of Onaway's grain elevator, Roberts shares personal and family stories of growing up in a small town whose claim to fame in the early 1900s was "Onaway Steers the World" by making wooden steering wheels for cars. Fishing and boating on Michigan's lakes, rivers, and streams figure largely in these tales, as do stories of hunting, school, and family life. Roberts' keen observations of nature-especially wildlife and birds-from his vantage point living on the banks of the Black River and Black Lake comprise the major portion of these writings. As a columnist for his hometown's paper The Onaway Outlook for more than twenty years, he shares the best of his writings from columns entitled From the Riverbank, From the Lakeshore, and On the Road.
