Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen extensive discussion about the continuing retreat from marriage, the increasing demand for the right to marry from previously excluded groups, and the need to protect those who do not wish to marry from being forced to do so. At the same time, weddings are big business, couples are spending more than ever before on getting married, and marriage ceremonies are increasingly elaborate. It is therefore timely to reflect on the rites of marriage, as well as the right to marry (or not to marry), and the relationship between them. To this end, this new interdisciplinary collection brings together scholars from numerous fields, including law, sociology, anthropology, psychology, demography, theology and art and design. Focusing on England and Wales, it explores in depth the specific issues arising from this jurisdiction's Anglican heritage, demographic development, current laws and social practices.

Download or read book Marriage Rites Customs and Ceremonies of All Nations of the Universe Classic Reprint written by Augusta Hamilton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marriage Rites, Customs, and Ceremonies of All Nations of the Universe The British courts of law have of late years enforced a strong object of proteo tion to the delicacy and affection of lovers. They will not suffer the ties of courtship to be torn asunder with impunity, rightly esti mating that this species of semi-marriage, iflong continued, is also for better or worse. Wherever the case is honestly made out, that truth and constancy have been violated, that gain or libertinism has broken the assurances of marriage, they have awarded ample damages, and confirm ed the equitable doctrine, that a breach of promise is a breach of trust - to the female, indeed of the highest importance, since, independently of the pungent feelings of disappointment, her future happiness and prosperity may be blended with it.-a groom, upon this principle, recently ob tained damages from a young woman, who had rejected him in consequence of an un expected acquisition of property. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marriage Rites, Customs, and Ceremonies, of All Nations of the Universe Women form so prominent a feature in the history of the universe, that whatever respects their various ranks and conditions must be important and entertaining. They have been endowed with the possession of the milder virtues, and claim the protection of the stronger sex, whose legislators, in proportion as they have adopted a more liberal and enlightened policy, have raised them to their just rank in society. Philosophically considered, there is but little inequality in the conditions of the two sexes. They are born, sustained, and die in the same manner. Education makes a distinction, which is connected with the domestic duties to which the physical state of women is peculiarly liable. Book Religious Legal Traditions International Human Rights Law and Muslim States

Download or read book Religious Legal Traditions International Human Rights Law and Muslim States written by Kamran Hashemi and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an exploration of aspects of the subject, Islam and Human Rights, which is the focus of considerable scholarship in recent years predominantly from Western scholars. Thus it is interesting and important to have the field addressed from a non -Western perspective and by an Iranian scholar. The study draws on Persian language literature that addresses both theological and legal dimensions of the theme. The work is also distinctive in that it tackles three areas that have been largely ignored in the literature. It undertakes a comparative study of the laws of several Muslim States with respect to religious freedom, minorities and the rights of the child. The study offers an optimistic vision of the fundamental compatibility of Islam and international human rights standards.

Book excerpt: EPDF and EPUB available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. In principle, couples getting married in England and Wales can choose to do so in a way that reflects their beliefs. In practice, the possibility of doing so varies considerably depending on the religious or non-religious beliefs they hold. To demonstrate this divergence, this book draws on the accounts of 170 individuals who had, or led, a wedding ceremony outside the legal framework. The authors examine what these ceremonies can tell us about how couples want to marry, and what aspects of the current law preclude them from doing so. This new evidence shows how the current law does not reflect social understandings of what makes a wedding meaningful. As recommended by the Law Commission, reform is urgently needed.
