Download or read book Hindu Widow Re Marriage Other Tracts Classic Reprint written by Mahatma Gandhi and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hindu Widow Re-Marriage Other Tracts Early marriage of girls would be greatly checked by the free introduction of widow re-marriage. As the state of the Hindu society now exists virgins are available both for bachelors and widow ers. The latter naturally and generally desire to unite themselves with grown up girls. Few parents like to give the hands of their girls to widowers. They, therefore, naturally desire to secure bachelor matches as early as possible to obviate the emergency of having re course to widower matches; and thus the early marriage is encouraged. It would also be a very salutary and equit able rule of practice if widowers were never to marry a maiden but always a widow. It will, perhaps, be better to notice here that some of the opponents(5 11 7, of the widow marriage may object that widowers should not 'marry at all. I must answer'at once to this objection that in this world it is impossible for widowers generally not to re marry. Download or read book Hindu Widow Marriage written by Ishvarchandra Vidyasagar and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the passage of the Hindu Widow's Re-marriage Act of 1856, Hindu tradition required a woman to live as a virtual outcast after her husband's death. Widows were expected to shave their heads, discard their jewelry, live in seclusion, and undergo regular acts of penance. Ishvarchandra Vidyasagar was the first Indian intellectual to successfully argue against these strictures. A Sanskrit scholar and passionate social reformer, Vidyasagar was a leading proponent of widow marriage in colonial India, urging his contemporaries to reject a ban that caused countless women to suffer needlessly. Vidyasagar's brilliant strategy paired a rereading of Hindu scripture with an emotional plea on behalf of the widow, resulting in an organic reimagining of Hindu law and custom. Vidyasagar made his case through the two-part publication Hindu Widow Marriage, a tour de force of logic, erudition, and humanitarian rhetoric. In this new translation, Brian A. Hatcher makes available in English for the first time the entire text of one of the most important nineteenth-century treatises on Indian social reform. An expert on Vidyasagar, Hinduism, and colonial Bengal, Hatcher enhances the original treatise with a substantial introduction describing Vidyasagar's multifaceted career, as well as the history of colonial debates on widow marriage. He innovatively interprets the significance of Hindu Widow Marriage within modern Indian intellectual history by situating the text in relation to indigenous commentarial practices. Finally, Hatcher increases the accessibility of the text by providing an overview of basic Hindu categories for first-time readers, a glossary of technical vocabulary, and an extensive bibliography.

Download or read book Hindu Widow Re Marriage Other Tracts written by Mahatma Gandhi and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hindu Widow Re-Marriage Other Tracts It is, I think, a matter of common knowledge that Hindu parents have a great desire see their girls married as early as possible. This hankering after the marriage of children probably owes its existence to the religious faith that every person must be married so as to be able to perform the religious duties more efficaciously. It is, perhaps, also due to the natural desire of procreation as well as to enjoy the Grihast Ashram or conjugal life. Lastly, it, perhaps, owes its origin in the fact that the best walk of life for women is the married life. It may not be out of place to mention here an instance of this solicitude which I have noticed in common parlance among women on the subject of marriage. Book Hindu Manners Customs and Ceremonies Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hindu Manners Customs and Ceremonies Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Henry K. Beauchamp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-04 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hindu Manners, Customs and Ceremonies, Vol. 2 The signs of sorrow manifested by a Hindu lady who loses her husband are of so exaggerated a description that one cannot help doubting their perfect sincerity; yet it is impossible that any Hindu widow could face the sad future awaiting her with tearless eyes. Doomed to perpetual widowhood, cast out of society, stamped with the seal of contumely, she has no consola tion whatever, except maybe the recollection of hardships that she has had to endure during her married life. I do not refer here to those unfortunate girls of five or six years of age, who, married to Brahmins of over sixty, very often become widows before they attain the age of puberty. Fortunately their youth and inexperience prevent their brooding over the sad condition in which they have been placed by such inhuman and iniquitous prejudices. But think of the numberless young widows in the prime of life and strength. How do they bear up against this cruel expulsion from the society of their fellow-creatures? The answer is, Better than one would be inclined to believe. The fact is, they must per force be resigned to their fate and however despised a widow may be, there is this consolation, that one who remarries is a hundred times more so, for she is shunned absolutely by every honest and respectable person. Thus there are few widows who would not look upon proposals to remarry as a downright insult, though in this respect they are seldom put to the test. Even an old gouty Brahmin, as poor as Irus, would feel indignant at the very suggestion of marrying a widow, though she were rich and endowed with all the charms of youth and beauty.
