Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marriage in Free Society Compared with this, the actual marriage, in its squalid perversity as we too often have occasion of knowing it, is as the wretched idol of the savage to the reality which it is supposed to represent; and one seems to hear the Aristophanic laughter of the gods as they contemplate man's little clay image of the Heavenly Love - which, cracked in the fire of daily life, he is fain to bind together with rusty hoops of law, and parchment bands, lest it should crumble and fall to pieces altogether. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Libertinism and Marriage Nothing is more flattering for an author than to see his book translated; to feel, therefore, that his thoughts are carried to the most distant parts and the fruits of his meditations placed in the hands of the greatest number of people possible. This favor becomes still more precious when the country which thus welcomes a stranger's efforts is itself renowned for the sterling worth of a long procession of distinguished workers who have produced brilliant volumes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marriage Therefore to treat such a subject with authority requires a pro found and sympathetic knowledge Of the social conditions and inner lives Of men in other times, classes and countries, as well as our own to speak of it with sincerity and acceptance demands a habit of mind finely tempered of frankness and delicacy - and a power of exact and noble expression which is the peculiar heritage of the poet. It follows then that I must renounce the hope of expressing my meaning in a manner which will cause it to be gladly received by all who hear me. I must be content with sincerity; and for that I ask a hearing, patient, and as sincere as I shall try to make my utterance. Book The Book in Society

Download or read book The Book in Society written by Solveig Robinson and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book in Society: An Introduction to Print Culture examines the origins and development of one of the most important inventions in human history. Books can inform, entertain, inspire, irritate, liberate, or challenge readers, and their forms can be tangible and traditional, like a printed, casebound volume, or virtual and transitory, like a screen-page of a cell-phone novel. Written in clear, non-specialist prose, The Book in Society first provides an overview of the rise of the book and of the modern publishing and bookselling industries. It explores the evolution of written texts from early forms to contemporary formats, the interrelationship between literacy and technology, and the prospects for the book in the twenty-first century. The second half of the book is based on historian Robert Darnton’s concept of a book publishing “communication circuit.” It examines how books migrate from the minds of authors to the minds of readers, exploring such topics as the rise of the modern notion of the author, the role of states and others in promoting or restricting the circulation of books, various modes of reproducing and circulating texts, and how readers’ responses help shape the form and content of the books available to them. Feature boxes highlighting key texts, individuals, and developments in the history of the book, carefully selected illustrations, and a glossary all help bring the history of the book to life.

Book Getting Married Classic Reprint

Download or read book Getting Married Classic Reprint written by Bernard Shaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Getting Married Now most laws are, and all laws ought to be, stronger than the strongest individual. Certam the marriage law is. The only people who successfully evade it are those who actually avail themselves of its shelter by pre tending to he married when they are not, and by Bohe mians who have no position to lose and no career to be closed. In every other case open violation of the mar riage laws means either downright ruin or such inconve niemce and disablement as a prudent man or woman would get married ten times over rather than face. And these disablements and inconveniences are not even the price of freedom; for, as Brieux has shewn so convinc ingly in Les Hannetons, an avowedly illicit union is often found in practice to be as tyrannical and as hard to es cape from as the worst legal one. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Road Together: A Contemporaneous Drama in Four Acts The spiritual level which any marriage achieves depends largely upon the quality of those who make it. Whatever its social import, of which few are delib erately conscious, it is essentially an affair of indi viduals. As they are and as they react to each other, so will the marriage be. Since it is only in marriage that society offers free and complete expression between them, it is there that the individual man and woman are most tested, most realized, and most offended. If one considers the strangeness of sex - with its vagrancy and variation - and the tremulous psychic in heritances which uncontrollably veer our acts and emo tions, one can only have deep charity when marriage ends in disillusion, and infinite wonder when it reaches rich fulfilment. Yet marriage endures somehow be tween these two extremes. Its bonds are obvious when based upon religious conviction, the responsibilities of children, the fear of admitting failure, and the pres sure of convention. But the subtle and powerful bond, I believe, is that which is made by the daily habit of living together. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Unmarried Viewed from the standpoints of racial well-being, national prosperity, hygiene, and morality, marriage is a biological and social dut In Great Britain the state of wedlock is esteeme as an ideal. The union is made holy by ecclesiastic sanction, protected and regulated by the law, and commended by economists, moralists, and reformers. It is cherished, extolled, and advocated by poets and preachers. Yet strangely, any hint of suggested reforms for the facilitation and encouragement of matrimony imbues a number of the apparent advocates of the essential institution with alarm or indignation. That marriage is a failure none but the very stupid will deny. One has but to glance over the statistics of divorce to realize how bitter a failure marriage really is. Nor will the stereotyped Philistine argument that the laxity of divorce laws and the growing looseness of woman account for the fact that: first, every twelfth marriage ends in divorce; second. This book was released on 2013-01-14 with total page 926 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written without notes in Ireland, and first published pseudonymously in 1948, Imperium is Francis Parker Yockey’s masterpiece. It is a critique of 19th-century rationalism and materialism, synthesising Oswald Spengler, Carl Schmitt, and Klaus Haushofer’s geopolitics. In particular, it rethinks the themes of Spengler’s The Decline of the West in an effort to account for the United States’ then recent involvement in World War II and for the task bequeathed to Europe’s political soldiers in the struggle to unite the Continent—heroically, rather than economically—in the realisation of the destiny implied in European High Culture. Yockey’s radical attack on liberal thought, especially that embodied by Americanism (distinct from America or Americans), condemned his work to obscurity, its appeal limited to the post-war fascist underground. Yet, Imperium transcents both the immediate post-war situation and its initial readership: it opened pathways to a deconstruction of liberalism, and introduced the concept of cultural vitalism— the organic conceptualisation of culture, with all that attends to it. These contributions are even more relevant now than in their day, and provide us with a deeper understanding of, as well as tools to deal with, the situation in the West in current century. It is with this in mind that the present, 900-page, fully-annotated edition is offered, complete with a major foreword by Dr Kerry Bolton, Julius Evola’s review as an afterword (in a fresh new translation), a comprehensive index, a chronology of Yockey's life, and an appendix, revealing, for the first time, much previously unknown information about the author's genealogical background.

Book Foundations of a Free Society

Download or read book Foundations of a Free Society written by Gregory Salmieri and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of a Free Society brings together some of the most knowledgeable Ayn Rand scholars and proponents of her philosophy, as well as notable critics, putting them in conversation with other intellectuals who also see themselves as defenders of capitalism and individual liberty. United by the view that there is something importantly right—though perhaps also much wrong—in Rand’s political philosophy, contributors reflect on her views with the hope of furthering our understandings of what sort of society is best and why. The volume provides a robust elaboration and defense of the foundation of Rand’s political philosophy in the principle that force paralyzes and negates the functioning of reason; it offers an in-depth scholarly discussion of Rand’s view on the nature of individual rights and the role of government in defending them; it deals extensively with the similarities and differences between Rand’s thought and the libertarian tradition (to which she is often assimilated) and objections to her positions arising from this tradition; it explores Rand’s relation to the classical liberal tradition, specifically with regard to her defense of freedom of the intellect; and it discusses her views on the free market, with special attention to the relation between these views and those of the Austrian school of economics.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Love: Or a Philosophical Demonstration of the Non-Exclusive Nature of Connubial Love, Also, a Review of the Exclusive Feature of the Fowlers, Adin Ballou, H. C. Wright, and Andrew Jackson Davis on Marriage We have meant to make the title of our book so plain that no thoroughly conservative mind could mistake - and so waste his money in purchasing it. We have given much of the last twenty years of our life and time to the world, "without money and without price;" and if we should find it necessary, or for any reason think it best to let our little work partly bear the expense of its own publication, we wish no one to be deceived in getting it. We have no thought of any material remuneration for our own labors. Reader, this is very radical; - and we confess to a choice not to be the first to wake any who, with all the influences of the nineteenth century about them, are yet soundly asleep upon the lap of the past. We do not wish such to be too suddenly brought into travailing pains for their own spiritual and mental birth to the future - even though we know these must sooner or later come. Some milder and more gradual dose might be better as a first stimulant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
