Download or read book Tennessee Records written by Jeannette Tillotson Acklen and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An encyclopedia of Tennessee genealogy, Acklen's "Bible Records and Marriage Bonds" is one of the foremost Tennessee source-books in print. It consists almost entirely of records of births, marriages, and deaths, plus marriage licenses of Dickson, Knox, Lebanon, and Wilson counties. Sections devoted exclusively to marriages generally run chronologically, giving exact dates and full names of brides and grooms. The bible records, however, offer the most substantial evidence of family connections and, in the manner of such records, are actually organic family records listing names and dates of birth, marriage, and death through several generations, depending, of course, on the extent to which a particular bible was handed on in the family and kept up to date. The work is complemented by a surname index of nearly 15,000 entries.

Book excerpt: This fabulous work is a county-by-county guide to the genealogical records and resources at the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville. Based largely on the Tennessee county records microfilmed by the LDS Genealogical Library, it is an inventory of extant county records and their dates of coverage. For each county the following data is given: formation, county seat, names and addresses of libraries and genealogical societies, published records (alphabetical by author), W.P.A. typescript records, microfilmed records (LDS), manuscripts, and church records. The LDS microfilm covers almost every record that could be used by the genealogist, from vital records to optometry registers, from wills and inventories to school board minutes. There also is a comprehensive list of statewide reference works.
Download or read book Blount County Alabama Marriages 1866 1919 written by Robin Sterling and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-12-24 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains all the marriages which took place in Blount County, Alabama between the years 1866 and 1919. Images of the original documents from the Blount County Court House were examined page by page and transcribed. Not only was the primary information recorded, but other significant details were gathered such as names of bondsmen, names of officials performing the ceremony, names and relationships of those granting permission, and the location of the ceremony. Plus, volumes and page numbers were recorded to provide for better documentation. Additionally, details of all licenses returned unexecuted were recorded. This book also contains those marriages recorded at the satellite Blount County court house at Bangor covering the years 1893 to 1901. This book is a handy tool for those with ancestors in Blount County, or those with ancestors in sections of Blount which became Cullman County.

Download or read book John McKinley and the Antebellum Supreme Court written by Steven P. Brown and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a penetrating analysis of US Supreme Court justice John McKinley Steven P. Brown rescues from obscurity John McKinley, one of the three Alabama justices, along with John Archibald Campbell and Hugo Black, who have served on the US Supreme Court. A native Kentuckian who moved in 1819 to northern Alabama as a land speculator and lawyer, McKinley was elected to the state legislature three times and became first a senator and then a representative in the US Congress before being elevated to the Supreme Court in 1837. He spent his first five years on the court presiding over the newly created Ninth Circuit, which covered Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. His was not only the newest circuit, encompassing a region that, because of its recent settlement, included a huge number of legal claims related to property, but it was also the largest, the furthest from Washington, DC, and by far the most difficult to traverse. While this is a thorough biography of McKinley’s life, it also details early Alabama state politics and provides one of the most exhaustive accounts available of the internal workings of the antebellum Supreme Court and the very real challenges that accompanied the now-abandoned practice of circuit riding. In providing the first in depth assessment of the life and Supreme Court career of Justice John McKinley, Brown has given us a compelling portrait of a man active in the leading financial, legal, and political circles of his day.
