Book excerpt: One of the longest games you'll ever play is the game of life. Who you play for, how you play it, and who you play it with, determines if you're going to be a champion. Marriage is the game of life on the highest competitive level, and basketball is a game you can play individually or with a team. Both require strategy and guidance no matter the years of experience. You're either playing on God's team or satan's, but either way, you're in the game. In Marriage and Basketball, we combine the strategies needed as an individual or a spouse on God's team through the eyes of basketball. Second Corinthians 2:11 states, "Lest satan should get an advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices." We must be aware of holy counteracts to the strategies that satan plays against us. It is our endeavor that this book not only open the eyes of your understanding concerning the importance of having a relationship with Christ and trusting him, but that you will also find a natural way to explain the spiritual realm to those that are unaware. There will be a final buzzard to your life. Make sure you're on the championship team, and that your record is on high.About the AuthorMartha A. Book Bad as I Wanna Be

Download or read book Bad as I Wanna Be written by Dennis Rodman and published by Dell. This book was released on 1997-05-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wild ride inside the glowing head of Dennis Rodman—the NBA's greatest rebounder and America's most outspoken and outrageous athlete. When Sports Illustrated put the man they call "America's most provocative athlete" on their cover, they sold more copies than any other issue they had sold in a decade (except the swimsuit issue). Why? Because Dennis Rodman has more in common with Mick Jagger than with his teammate Michael Jordan. With his body-covering tattoos and ever-changing fluorescent hair, Rodman's sideline antics and celebrated benchings captivated sports fans as much as his record-breaking on-court performances and earned him a reputation as a rebel with the same penchant for shocking behavior as his on-again off-again squeeze, Madonna. In Bad as I Wanna Be he shares his surprising and candid opinions on: • Mortality: “If I die young, everybody’s going to say they saw it coming.” • His game: “I never want to score. Never. I want to rebound.” • Having it all: “From the outside I had everything I could want. From the inside I had nothing but an empty soul and a gun in my lap.” . . . And so much more, including his life, from going to prison for stealing watches to his daughter, the light of his life. At a time when most celebrities and professional athletes try to control their public personas like politicians and refrain from expressing their true beliefs, Dennis Rodman is a refreshingly unique, uncompromising individual who both transcends his world and refuses to conform to it. Bad as I Wanna Be is as candid, intriguing, and unforgettable as he is.

Book Relational Intelligence

Download or read book Relational Intelligence written by Dharius Daniels and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relational Intelligence is your action plan for getting smart about who you surround yourself with. Using Jesus's relational framework for choosing the twelve disciples, this book gives you the tools you need to define, discern, align, assess, and activate your relationships to unlock your greatest potential. Years of ministry leadership experience have taught Dr. Dharius Daniels that there's no such thing as a casual relationship. All of our relationships either push us forward into our God-given purposes or hold us back from who we're meant to be. If you're serious about taking your life to the next level, you should be serious about taking your relationships to the next level, too. Scripture gives us a blueprint for the way relationships should be managed, and this blueprint helps us construct and grow relationships that are fruitful. It tells us that our spiritual, physical, financial, emotional, and professional progress is greatly impacted by who we allow to be a part of our lives and what part we allow them to play. Relational Intelligence reminds us that with our destiny on the line, relationships are too consequential to nonchalantly roll the dice in managing them. Daniels shows us that relationships were part of God's design, and when we understand and apply what God has to say about them, we can finally learn to: Reflect on the people that God has placed in our lives Avoid unnecessary relational turmoil Be intentional in each of our relationships Accomplish our God-given purpose When your purpose is on the line, the cost of relational unintelligence is too great to pay. Join Daniels as you uncover the secret to gaining the relational intelligence you need to build the purposeful life that you want.

Book The Wholehearted Marriage

Download or read book The Wholehearted Marriage written by Greg Smalley and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wholehearted Marriage offers practical tools for helping couples keep a passionate connection with one another and understand the role their hearts play in their lives. Drs. Smalley and Stoever maintain that circumstances, such as busy lifestyles, differences between spouses, personal baggage, the loss of a loved one, childhood trauma, etc., trigger reactions that condition us to close up our hearts for protection, blocking the flow of love. A disengaged, protected heart makes it impossible to experience an intimate, connected marriage. As a result, couples drift apart, trying to find some version of contentment, or they give up altogether and look for love somewhere else. Through their experiences in marriage counseling, Drs. Smalley and Stoever discovered that the commonly heard phrase "I don't love him/her anymore" is merely a camouflaged misunderstanding about what true love is and God's design for it. They affirm that love is more than just a feeling, and that to have true, lasting intimacy, couples need to learn to love wholeheartedly.

  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 1996-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780803283701
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Basketball written by James Naismith and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Naismith was teaching physical education at the Young Men's Christian Association Training College in Springfield, Massachusetts, and felt discouraged because calisthenics and gymnastics didn't engage his students. What was needed was an indoor wintertime game that combined recreation and competition. One evening he worked out the fundamentals of a game that would quickly catch on. Two peach half-bushel baskets gave the name to the brand new sport in late 1891. Basketball: Its Origin and Development was written by the inventor himself, who was inspired purely by the joy of play. Naismith, born in northern Ontario in 1861, gave up the ministry to preach clean living through sport. He describes Duck on the Rock, a game from his Canadian childhood, the creative reasoning behind his basket game, the eventual refinement of rules and development of equipment, the spread of amateur and professional teams throughout the world, and the growth of women's basketball (at first banned to male spectators because the players wore bloomers). Naismith lived long enough to see basketball included in the Olympics in 1936. Three years later he died, after nearly forty years as head of the physical education department at the University of Kansas. This book, originally published in 1941, carries a new introduction by William J. Baker, a professor of history at the University of Maine, Orono. He is the author of Jesse Owens: An American Life and Sports in the Western World.

Book Babe

  • Author : Susan E. Cayleff
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN : 9780252065934
  • Pages : 368 pages

Download or read book Babe written by Susan E. Cayleff and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most gifted athletes in the world, Babe Didrikson Zaharias dominated track and field, winning two Olympic gold medals in 1932. She went on to compete in baseball, bowling, basketball, tennis, and particularly in golf. The American public was smitten with her wit, frankness, and "unladylike" bravado. She became an American legend. The legend was challenged, however, by members of the press and society who insinuated that her femininity, even her femaleness, were suspect--that there was something different, even wrong, about this preternaturally gifted woman in a male-dominated world. She had ably used her androgyny and her powerful athleticism to promote herself, but she soon felt compelled to craft herself into a more marketable female role model--particularly in connection with the "proper" world of golf. To increase her opportunities for competitive play in this field, she became a co-founder and officer of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). As a major step in her makeover, Babe already had married George Zaharias, a wrestling promoter who was a vital partner in her constant efforts at self-promotion. But by 1950 Babe was deeply involved with a young golfer, Betty Dodd, whose for-the-record discussion of their remarkable love is included in Babe. Stricken with cancer in her prime, Babe went on to courageously and publicly fight the disease. Babe is a comprehensive, in-depth biography of a woman who was a great athlete at a time when it was extremely difficult for a woman to be her own person. Through interviews with members of Babe's family, her golf peers, and medical personnel, Cayleff caringly reveals the life and probes the legend of this unusual American hero. She unflinchingly examines the athletic community, the media, and the society that both loved and judged Babe, whose story embodies the struggle of all women who dare to transcend stereotypes and claim their own definitions and unique identities. Babe allows her to be all the hero--and all the human being--she was meant to be.

Book Three Loves

Download or read book Three Loves written by Todd Froehlich and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three Loves is a brief look at the three kinds of love involved in dating, courtship, and marriage. C.S. Lewis, in his book, The Four Loves, proposes that there are four kinds of love based on classical Greek. However, only two of his Greek words for love are found in the Bible. For the purpose of looking at the love between a man and a woman, it makes sense to look at three kinds of love romantic, committed, and sexual.

The greatest enemy is ordinary. Ordinary marriages lose hope. Ordinary marriages lack vision. Ordinary marriages give in to compromise. Ordinary is the belief that this is as good as it will ever get. And when we begin to settle for ordinary, it’s easy to move from “I do” to “I’m done.” Justin and Trisha Davis know just how dangerous ordinary can be. In this beautifully written book, Justin and Trisha take us inside the slow fade that occurred in their own marriage—each telling the story from their own perspective. Together, they reveal the mistakes they made, the work they avoided, the thoughts and feelings that led to an affair and near divorce, and finally, the heart-change that had to occur in both of them before they could experience the hope, healing, and restoration of a truly extraordinary marriage.
