Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a heart and a soul in this book that breathes in ancient harmony with rhythms past. In P.S. Pray the Same for Me, Marquita Smith reaches back into her roots to draw prayers that speak simply yet brilliantly to everyday events in our lives. She speaks with a subtlety that is disarming, a simplicity that belies sacred wisdom lovingly and graciously culled from generations before her. She asks in return that theythat wereciprocate, simply by offering our own prayers in return. By doing so, she says, we free ourselves, from old programming and thought patterns, connecting to our past so that we can begin to live, and thrive, in the present. Smith captures this richness in a way that is both gentle, and yet stunningly revelatory. And revel we do. This book is nothing short of enchanting. Download or read book Representations of Black Women in the Media written by Marquita Marie Gammage and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1920 W.E.B. Du Bois cited the damnation of women as linked to the devaluation of motherhood. This dilemma, he argues, had a crushing blow on Black women as they were forced into slavery. Black womanhood, portrayed as hypersexual by nature, became an enduring stereotype which did not coincide with the dignity of mother and wife. This portrayal continues to reinforce negative stereotypes of Black women in the media today. This book highlights how Black women have been negatively portrayed in the media, focusing on the export nature of media and its ability to convey notions of Blackness to the public. It argues that media such as rap music videos, television dramas, reality television shows, and newscasts create and affect expectations of Black women. Exploring the role that racism, misogyny and media play in the representation of Black womanhood, it provides a foundation for challenging contemporary media’s portrayal of Black women.

Book excerpt: NAMED ONE OF THE MUST-READ ROMANCES OF THE YEAR BY USA TODAY • Hailed as “a sexy, emotional, heartfelt read” by Monica Murphy, Take the Fall is the first in a new series from New York Times bestselling Marquita Valentine. In this emotional short novel, passions run hot as a rugged, brooding Marine rekindles an old flame. As a teenager, Seth O’Connor went to jail for a crime he had nothing to do with. He took the fall to protect the girl he loved, but the cruel realities of prison hardened him. After doing his time, Seth shuts her out and enlists in the Marines—until his grandmother’s funeral forces him to come home and face Rowan Simmons once again. The woman she’s become puts all his high-school memories to shame, and Seth wants her more than ever. Can he be honest about why he denied her for so long? After Seth pushed her away, Rowan swore that no man would ever hurt her again. But the boy who broke her heart has become a sexy Marine, capable of fulfilling her every desire—and now that he’s back in town, old feelings are simmering to a boil. Rowan wants to stay strong, even as her body surrenders to his expert touch. She only hopes that by taking him back, she can finally help heal the wounds that drove them apart. Download or read book The Working Poor written by David K. Shipler and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2008-11-12 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning Arab and Jew, an intimate portrait unfolds of working American families struggling against insurmountable odds to escape poverty. "This is clearly one of those seminal books that every American should read and read now." —The New York Times Book Review As David K. Shipler makes clear in this powerful, humane study, the invisible poor are engaged in the activity most respected in American ideology—hard, honest work. But their version of the American Dream is a nightmare: low-paying, dead-end jobs; the profound failure of government to improve upon decaying housing, health care, and education; the failure of families to break the patterns of child abuse and substance abuse. Shipler exposes the interlocking problems by taking us into the sorrowful, infuriating, courageous lives of the poor—white and black, Asian and Latino, citizens and immigrants. We encounter them every day, for they do jobs essential to the American economy. This impassioned book not only dissects the problems, but makes pointed, informed recommendations for change. It is a book that stands to make a difference.

They try each others food, and laugh out loud at the exotic flavors. I hear only the stories Ashley told us. Like wild madness buried within me, I only taste the flavors of adrenaline mingled with intent. Both are equally enticing and bitter on my tongue. I excuse myself from the table and pace outside. I want to fight back. We finish packing our suitcases, and, within the hour, are on our way to the airport for our midnight flight to Korea. The whole day feels like a blur. While packing the car with our bags, our tin-tin driver looks at me and, smiling, says, Do not forget Cambodia. I fight to find my breath.

Book excerpt: "Challenging Misrepresentations of Black Womanhood" investigates the typecasting of Black womanhood and the larger sociological impact on Black women’s self-perceptions. It details the historical and contemporary use of stereotypes against Black women and how these women work to challenge and dispel false perceptions. The book highlights the role of racist ideas in the reproduction and promotion of stereotypes of Black femaleness in media, literature, artificial intelligence and the perceptions of the general public. Contributors in this collection identify the racist and sexist ideologies behind the misperceptions of Black womanhood and illuminate twenty-first–century stereotypical treatment of Black women such as Michelle Obama and Serena Williams, and explore topics such as comedic expressions of Black motherhood, representations of Black women in television dramas and literature, and identity reclamation and self-determination. "Challenging Misrepresentations of Black Womanhood" establishes the criteria with which to examine the role of stereotypes in the lives of Black women and, more specifically, its impact on their social and psychological well-being.
