The film is based on the 1906 novel of the same title by Rafael Sabatini.[1] It was the second film of the 19-year-old John Wayne, who had a minor role. The film's sets were designed by the art director James Basevi. The film is set in the reign of King Louis XIII. When Comte Châtellerault fails to win the hand in marriage of Roxalanne de Lavedan, despite hinting at leniency for her rebellious family if she accepts, he responds to the notorious womanizer Marquis de Bardelys' mockery by wagering his estate against that of Bardelys that Bardelys cannot succeed in marrying Roxalanne either within three months. While Bardelys does not desire marriage, he feels he has to accept the challenge. However the king, on hearing of the wager, forbids Bardelys from seeking a marriage alliance with a rebel family.Bardelys ignores the king's orders as he feels that his honour is at stake. On the way to the Lavedan estate, he stumbles upon a fatally wounded man, Lesperon, who asks him to say farewell to his beloved but dies before telling him her name. Bardelys takes his papers and, when challenged by a party of the king's soldiers, assumes Lesperon's identity to conceal his own, only to find that Lesperon is a wanted traitor. Bardelys escapes after fighting them off, and wounded, seeks refuge in the Lavedan residence. Roxalanne tends to him and hides him. Meanwhile, Roxalanne and her family discover with anger that she is the subject of a public wager by Bardelys, who prudently retains his assumed identity and grows closer to Roxalanne. They declare their love for one another but she discovers that Lesperon was engaged and, furious at what she thinks are his false protestations of love, denounces Bardelys to soldiers. Bardelys, under the identity of Lesperon, is tried for treason. Châtellerault, who is the head judge, maliciously refuses to confirm his true identity and condemns him to death.Roxalanne, still in love with Bardelys and guilty at causing his imminent death, marries Châtellerault on his promise to remit the sentence, but he breaks his word. Bardelys, on the gallows, delays his execution until the king arrives and saves him. Bardelys goes to Châtellerault and forfeits the wager and his estate so he can propose to Roxalanne with a clear conscience. The two men fight and Bardelys repeatedly wins, when soldiers enter to arrest Châtellerault upon which he kills himself rather than suffer the indignity of a trial. The king enters to laud Bardelys' skill with women to Roxalanne's annoyance but she is mollified when the king says that this is the first time Bardelys has sought to marry.

Book excerpt: Bardelys the Magnificent is a fairly good novel, one of Sabatini's earliest. His writing isn't quite as polished as it would be later on and the story isn't told quite as smoothly as in other, later books. Still, it's a good and entertaining read. The Marquis de Bardelys is a court favorite of Louis XIII who is goaded into a wager that he can woo and wed the country noblewoman Roxalanne de Lavédan, the wager being with his court rival who recently failed to win said fair maiden. Upon his arrival at the Lavédans' château, Bardelys is mistaken for someone else and initially unable to correct the mistake. As Roxalanne and he get along, he finds himself afraid of the consequences should he reveal himself to be the notorious libertine Bardelys (whose reputation is exaggerated, anyway). Others jealous of Bardelys for various reasons complicate matters further, and before all is finally resolved, he stands for a while in real danger of losing his head.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bardelys the Magnificent: Being an Account of the Strange Wooing Pursued by the Sieur Marcel De Saint-Pol, Marquis of Bardelys, and of the Things That in the Course of It Befell Him, in Languedoc, in the Year of the Rebellion A sudden hush fell upon the assembly where a moment ago this very man had been the subject Of our talk, and silenced were the wits that but an instant since had been making free with his name and turning the Languedoc courtship from which he was newly returned with the shame Of defeat into a subject for heartless mockery and jest. Surprise was in the air, for we had heard that Chatellerault was crushed by his ill-fortune in the lists Of Cupid, and we had not looked to see him joining SO soon a board at which or SO at least I boasted mirth presided. Book John Gilbert

Download or read book John Gilbert written by Eve Golden and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2013-04-12 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revealing biography of the legendary silent film star chronicles his meteoric rise, famous romances, and tragic descent into obscurity. Known as “The Great Lover,” John Gilbert was among the world's most recognizable actors during the silent era. A swashbuckling figure on screen and off, he is best known today for his high-profile romances with Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich, his legendary conflicts with Louis B. Mayer, his four tumultuous marriages, and his swift decline after the introduction of talkies. Many myths have developed around the larger-than-life star in the eighty years since his untimely death, but this definitive biography sets the record straight. Eve Golden separates fact from fiction in John Gilbert, tracing the actor's life from his youth spent traveling with his mother in acting troupes to the peak of fame at MGM, where he starred opposite Mae Murray, Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, and others in popular films such as The Merry Widow, The Big Parade, Flesh and the Devil, and Love. Golden debunks some of the most pernicious rumors about Gilbert, including the oft-repeated myth that he had a high-pitched, squeaky voice that ruined his career. Meticulous, comprehensive, and generously illustrated, this book provides a behind-the-scenes look at one of the silent era's greatest stars and the glamorous yet brutal world in which he lived.
