Book excerpt: Typee, in full Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life, first novel by Herman Melville, published in London in 1846 as Narrative of a Four Months' Residence Among the Natives of a Valley of the Marquesas Islands. Initially regarded as a travel narrative, the novel is based on Melville's monthlong adventure as a guest-captive of the Typee people, natives of the Marquesas Islands (in present-day French Polynesia), following his desertion from the whaler Acushnet along with shipmate Richard Tobias Greene in July 1842. Melville injured his leg in the escape from the Acushnet, and Greene was allowed to leave the Typees to find Melville a doctor, but he became sidetracked and never returned. Shortly thereafter, Melville was rescued by the Australian whaler Lucy Ann.Typee is an anthropological study of an exotic and savage native culture that both impressed and frightened Melville (the Typees were allegedly cannibals). The protagonist of the novel, Tom (also known as Tommo), spends four months with his companion, Toby, in a Polynesian island paradise as prisoners of the Typees. Tom's opportunities for escape are limited by his disease-swollen leg and by his personal jailer-servant, the devoted Kory-Kory. He befriends several natives, notably the beautiful Fayaway. Tom is intrigued by their social and religious customs, but he is also disgusted by their indolence and cannibalism. Ultimately, he chooses "civilization" over idyllic island life.

Download or read book Typee written by Hermann Melville and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985. Typee, originally published in 1846, was Melville's first book. Full of romance and adventure, it is also largely autobiographical. It was an immensely popular and controversial book in its day and made Melville the literary discoverer of Polynesia. It tells the story of Tommo, a sailor, and his adventures on the Marquesas Islands. The book contains much romance and action packed events in a location that is totally exotic and sensuous. There is a serious background to.the work. When Melville was in Polynesia the missionaries had already begun their work and the colonists were hard on their heels. Melville's views on the influence of the two groups and his fair portrayal of the Polynesians were the centre of the controversies which raged over its publication and led to the book's ultimate censorship in America

Book Introduction to French Polynesia

Download or read book Introduction to French Polynesia written by Gilad James, PhD and published by Gilad James Mystery School. This book was released on with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French Polynesia is a group of 118 islands located in the central region of the South Pacific Ocean. The islands are divided into five main groups: the Society Islands, the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas Islands, and the Austral Islands. French Polynesia is also known for its coral reefs and lagoons, and it is a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful scenery and warm climate. French Polynesia has a rich history and cultural heritage. It was first inhabited by the Polynesians, who lived there for thousands of years before European explorers arrived in the 16th century. The islands were later colonized by the French in the 19th century and became a French overseas territory in 1946. Today, French Polynesia has a unique blend of French and Polynesian cultures, with French being the official language and Polynesian culture being celebrated through music, dance, and art.

Book Mystic Isles of the South Seas

Download or read book Mystic Isles of the South Seas written by Frederick O'Brien and published by IndyPublish.com. This book was released on 1921 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people have heard of Charles Bernard Nordhoff and James Norman Hall who came out to Tahiti and wrote Mutiny on the Bounty and its sequels, as well as Faery Lands of the South Seas, another installment in the Resnick Library of Worldwide Adventure. But there was another American, all but forgotten today, who traveled to the South Seas, fell in love with what he saw, and took pen to paper to share his experiences with those back home. His name was Frederick J. O'Brien, and, after working for a time for the Manila Times, he wrote a trio of books about what he had seen and experienced. Before the dust had cleared, he had written White Shadows in the South Seas, Mystic Isles of the South Seas, and Atolls of the Sun -- all classics in the field, and until now all long out of print. Not meant to be in any way academic, these books are quite simply love poems written to the tropical paradise that was French Polynesia in the early years of the 20 "th" Century. As the author himself puts it in his foreword: "It is for those who stay at home yet dream of foreign places that I have written this book, a record of one happy year spent among the simple, friendly cannibals....There is little of profound research. Nothing, I fear, to startle the anthropologist or to revise encyclopedias; such expectation was far from my thoughts when I sailed from Papeite on the Morning Star. I went to see what I should see, and to learn whatever should be taught me by the days as they came. What I saw and what I learned the reader will see and learn, and no more." With plenty of photographs to illustrate his text, O'Brien has given readers a glimpse of South Seas life the way it used to be -- and through hisown words, we feel as though we have been there.

Book Island of Shattered Dreams

Download or read book Island of Shattered Dreams written by Chantal T. Spitz and published by Huia Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally in English, Island of Shattered Dreams is the first ever novel by an indigenous Tahitian writer. In a lyrical and immensely moving style, this book combines a family saga and a doomed love story, set against the background of French Polynesia in the period leading up to the first nuclear tests. The text is highly critical of the French government, and as a result its publication in Tahiti was polarising.
