Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marmaduke Denver: And Other Stories It was the sweet season of buds and blossoms; the fragrant hawthorn breathed a generous largess of perfume through the soft spring air and had already begun to spread a gorgeous carpet of pink and white petals. In the orchard at Redwood Farm two young people were seated beneath a hoary-looking apple-tree whose gnarled limbs, speckled with grey-white moss gave it a patriarchal eminence among its more youthful companions. From their Titian-like parent sprang vigorous young shoots which triumphantly spread forth a lavish load of satiny blossoms. Florence Denver was a rosy-cheeked girl of some fifteen summers, plump and healthy and sunburnt, but full of promise of the glorious fruit of beauty which was sure to follow this healthy blossoming. The soft, smooth skin was tinged with a pink hue which seemed to come from the great rose in each cheek; the somewhat large mouth was clear cut and expressive, and the full eyes seemed to have borrowed their color from the shifting hues of the sky - so changeable were they, now light, now dark blue eyes - that would be capable of expressing every emotion. The boy at her side was so very boyish and awkward, that an observer would never have lingered to bestow a second glance upon him. Our three districts in this region of Colorado now have histories specifically for them. Such works provide a valuable and needed synthesis of history and literature for these areas and also gives our managers data that are used on a daily basis for land-use decision making. Multiple land use is a Bureau mission that is being met. Oil and gas, coal, oil shale and other energy minerals, not to mention rights-of-ways, grazing programs, recreation projects and land-use planning, are all supported by histories such as this. Resource Management Plans and subsequent Environmental Impact Statements that are produced for the Bureau's Area Offices are the foundations for long-term land-use management. The Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Resource Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement is a Bureau pilot document and serves as a management tool for the Glenwood Springs Resource Area. This history, Volley of Opportunity supports the Resource Management Plan. In addition, a history provides background and support for the upcoming Grand Junction Resource Area Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement. The Volley of Opportunity has already been used for Oil Shale Environmental Statements and for the Federal Coal Leasing Program in the Grand Junction, Colorado, District. Truly, such histories are not only multiple-use in scope but are also management tools that provide basic understanding for land use decisions. Additionally, this history represents an ongoing effort to provide the public reader with a work that is not only interesting but is also well researched. In this way, another sector is satisfied. These histories are used by schools, libraries, universities and, of course, the general public. Again, multiple-use is served. Finally, as the Volley of Opportunity was being prepared, it happened that the City of Grand Junction's Centennial would occur in 1982. Coincidentally, the Glenwood Springs Resource Management Plan will be published in November 1982. Since this history serves several purposes, it is appropriate that it also is the Bureau's contribution to Grand Junction's Centennial celebration.

Slavery was not the direct or proximate cause of the war; rather, it was intertwined with these other complex issues and factors that led to the war (see Appendix A). But it is not much of a stretch to say it was also about the American West--fought to determine the future control of that part of the United States. Although most of the battles took place in the east and southeast, the American West held much political and economic value for both the North and the South. The ports of California would allow the Confederate States to avoid the Union blockade of Southern ports. The gold and silver of the West could provide additional funding sources for the war for both sides. Last but not least, all of the territories and states held value for their present or future legislative votes in both chambers of Congress. What role did Colorado play in the Civil War and what role did Confederate Veterans play in development of Colorado? Two Colorado Governors were Confederate Veterans--James B. Grant, the third governor of Colorado served in the 20th Alabama Light Artillery Battalion, and Charles S. Thomas, the eleventh governor of Colorado served in the Georgia State Militia. Georgia Confederate Veterans William and Joseph Russell discovered gold on Little Dry Creek along the Platte River that began the "Pikes Peak or Bust" Gold Rush in 1858. The brothers founded the town of Auraria on Cherry Creek, which became the first permanent settlement of what would later become Denver. Confederate Veterans also served as senators, a congressmen, as well as officials in towns and municipalities all across the state. These prominent Colorado Confederate Veterans are listed in this book, along with the positions they held. Additionally, there are 506 known Confederate Veterans buried in Colorado. These Veterans are detailed in this book, with their names, ranks, units, and the location of their graves. The Civil War radically changed the role of women on both sides of the war. Women filled positions previously held by men, and many women found themselves working outside the home and earning money for the first time in their lives. Most of the Southern women served on the home front, but many also served the Confederacy as nurses, spies, couriers, and dignitaries, while some even served in uniform. You can read about some of their exploits in this book. Native Americans also served in the Confederate States Army. Their units and achievements are detailed herein.
