Book Marlborough s Irish Dragoons

Download or read book Marlborough s Irish Dragoons written by Walter Temple Willcox and published by Leonaur Limited. This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The glorious beginnings of a forgotten regiment Most regiments of the British Army are able to trace their history in an unbroken line to the date of their creation. Not so the British cavalry regiment which is the subject of this book, because today it has been largely forgotten. The 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers came into being in 1858, yet curiously in precedence it ranked behind the 17th Lancers. This is because in 1798 this regiment-known at the time as the 5th (or Royal Irish) Regiment of Dragoons-was disbanded in disgrace following false accusations that Irish rebels had infiltrated its ranks. As a result of this most overviews of the regiment's history consider it to be a lancer regiment from the mid-19th century. In fact the regiment was formed in 1689 as James Wynn's Regiment of Dragoons, and had an illustrious career in that role long before lances were introduced into the British Army. It fought at the Battle of the Boyne and at Aughrim during the Irish Campaign, and became the Royal Dragoons of Ireland serving during the War of Spanish Succession and winning battle honours at Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde and Malplaquet. The Leonaur editors believe this is the first time that this regiment has been the subject of a book in its own right and that the time has come to give it the credit it is due. The text has been principally taken from Willcox's more expansive work, and the book includes additional maps and illustrations which were not included in the original text. This is an essential book for those interested in Irish regiments or the campaigns of the Duke of Marlborough. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

The final installment in Winston S. Churchill’s four-volume biography of John Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough—a famed military leader known for never having lost a military campaign. Despite his successes, Marlborough’s later years were full of struggle—including attacks from political and personal enemies. Winston S. Churchill vividly recounts the intrigues and challenges of his ancestor’s extraordinarily eventful life. In this last volume, detailing the end of his career, Marlborough’s story is told with sensitivity and nuance—giving the reader an intimate glimpse into his state of mind. It’s a fascinating read for anyone interested in English history—and provides profound insights into leadership, loyalty, and personal conduct as valuable today as three centuries ago. “A sustained meditation on statecraft and war by the greatest war leader of our time.” —Foreign Affairs “The greatest historical work written in our century, an inexhaustible mine of political wisdom and understanding, which should be required reading for every student of political science.” —Leo Strauss

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars of British America generally conclude that the early eighteenth-century Anglo-American empire was commercial in economics, liberal in politics, and parochial in policy, somnambulant in an era of “salutary neglect,” but Stephen Saunders Webb here demonstrates that the American provinces, under the spur of war, became capitalist, coercive, and aggressive, owing to the vigorous leadership of career army officers, trained and nominated to American government by the captain general of the allied armies, the first duke of Marlborough, and that his influence, and that of his legates, prevailed through the entire century in America. Webb’s work follows the duke, whom an eloquent enemy described as “the greatest statesman and the greatest general that this country or any other country has produced,” his staff and soldiers, through the ten campaigns, which, by defanging France, made the union with Scotland possible and made “Great Britain” preeminent in the Atlantic world. Then Webb demonstrates that the duke’s legates transformed American colonies into provinces of empire. Marlborough’s America, fifty years in the making, is the fourth volume of The Governors-General.
