Book Markup Economics

Download or read book Markup Economics written by Fouad Sabry and published by One Billion Knowledgeable. This book was released on 2024-02-04 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Markup Economics The difference between the selling price of a product or service and the cost of producing that product or service is known as the markup. When represented as a percentage of the total cost, it is frequently used. Additionally, in order to generate a profit and cover the expenses that are associated with running a business, a markup is added to the total cost that is incurred by the producer of a product or service. A product's total cost is the sum of all of its expenses, both fixed and variable, that are incurred during the manufacturing and distribution processes. In addition to being expressed as a fixed sum, markup can also be expressed as a percentage of the total cost or selling price. The difference between the wholesale price and the retail price is typically used to compute the retail markup, which is then expressed as a percentage of the wholesale price. Additional approaches are also utilized. Book Markups Gaps and the Welfare Costs of Business Fluctuations

Download or read book Markups Gaps and the Welfare Costs of Business Fluctuations written by Jordi Galí and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we present a simple, theory-based measure of the variations in aggregate economic efficiency associated with business fluctuations. We decompose this indicator, which we refer to as 'the gap', into two constituent parts: a price markup and a wage markup, and show that the latter accounts for the bulk of the fluctuations in our gap measure. Finally, we derive a measure of the welfare costs of business cycles that is directly related to our gap variable, and which takes into account explicitly the existence of a varying aggregate inefficiency. When applied to postwar U.S. data, for plausible parametrizations, our measure suggests welfare losses of fluctuations that are of a higher order of magnitude than those derived by Lucas (1987). It also suggests that the major postwar recessions involved substantial efficiency costs.

Book Economic Principles and Problems

Download or read book Economic Principles and Problems written by Geoffrey Schneider and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic Principles and Problems: A Pluralistic Introduction offers a comprehensive introduction to the major perspectives in modern economics, including mainstream and heterodox approaches. Through providing multiple views of markets and how they work, it leaves readers better able to understand and analyze the complex behaviors of consumers, firms, and government officials, as well as the likely impact of a variety of economic events and policies. Most principles of economics textbooks cover only mainstream economics, ignoring rich heterodox ideas. They also lack material on the great economists, including the important ideas of Adam Smith, Karl Marx, Thorstein Veblen, John Maynard Keynes, and Friedrich Hayek. Mainstream books tend to neglect the kind of historical analysis that is crucial to understanding trends that help us predict the future. Moreover, they focus primarily on abstract models more than existing economic realities. This engaging book addresses these inadequacies. Including explicit coverage of mainstream economics and the major heterodox schools of economic thought—institutionalists, feminists, radical political economists, post-Keynesians, Austrians, and social economists—it allows the reader to choose which ideas they find most compelling in explaining modern economic realities. Written in an engaging style and focused on real-world examples, this textbook brings economics to life. Multiple examples of how each economic model works, coupled with critical analysis of the assumptions behind them, enable students to develop a sophisticated understanding of the material. Digital supplements are also available for students and instructors. Economic Principles and Problems offers the most contemporary and complete package for any pluralist economics class.

Book Handbook of Monetary Economics

Download or read book Handbook of Monetary Economics written by Benjamin M. Friedman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-11-16 with total page 971 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What tools are available for setting and analyzing monetary policy? World-renowned contributors examine recent evidence on subjects as varied as price-setting, inflation persistence, the private sector's formation of inflation expectations, and the monetary policy transmission mechanism. Stopping short of advocating conclusions about the ideal conduct of policy, the authors focus instead on analytical methods and the changing interactions among the ingredients and properties that inform monetary models. The influences between economic performance and monetary policy regimes can be both grand and muted, and this volume clarifies the present state of this continually evolving relationship." Book Teaching Post Keynesian Economics

Download or read book Teaching Post Keynesian Economics written by Jesper Jespersen and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contends that post Keynesian economics has its own methodological and didactic basis, and its realistic analysis is much-needed in the current economic and financial crisis. At a time when the original message of KeynesÕ General Theory is no longer present in the most university syllabuses, this book celebrates the uniqueness of teaching post Keynesian economics, providing comparisons with traditional economic rationale and illustrating the advantages of post Keynesian pedagogy. Against a backdrop in which neo-classical textbooks prevail, the expert contributors demonstrate that Keynes and The General Theory possess indispensable insight that would furnish students with a clearer understanding of the world economy in which they live. They explore the teaching of post Keynesian economics from a number of different perspectives, covering topics such as open system theorizing, pluralism in teaching, rhetoric in the spirit of Keynes, uncertainty, expectations and money. A critique of mainstream and traditional economic textbooks is also provided. This highly unique and fascinating book will provide an invaluable reference tool for teachers and researchers in post Keynesian economics, as well as their students.

Book Making Of Economics The 4th Edition Vol Iii The Radical Assault

Download or read book Making Of Economics The 4th Edition Vol Iii The Radical Assault written by E Ray Canterbery and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2009-12-14 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first in the field to cover exclusively the modern radical economists. Science has always had its radicals; economics is unexceptional in this regard. The book begins with the persona of Karl Marx and his soulmate Friedrich Engels, the most radical of all, continuing with the central ideas of Marx, including his theory of capitalism and an understanding of why, in Marx's view, capitalism is doomed. Thereafter, Thorstein Veblen fills the role as the USA radical who founded the only uniquely American school of economics - the institutionalist school. This is followed by Joseph Schumpeter and his theory of capitalist motion. According to Schumpeter, the demise of capitalism is self-inflicted through creative destruction. The bestselling authors, Robert Heilbroner and John Kenneth Galbraith, straddle both the insitutionalist and Post Keynesian schools. The new left radicals emanated from Galbraith's Harvard University and are still around today. The heyday of the new right came during the administration of Ronald Reagan and was led by the neo-Austrians. Finally, the book concludes by analyzing the Post Keynesians' claim to be the legitimate heirs to Keynesianism. Thus far, they fall into the radical camp. This book is also available as a .

Book Cost Structure and the Measurement of Economic Performance

Download or read book Cost Structure and the Measurement of Economic Performance written by Catherine J. Morrison Paul and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-02-28 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cost Structure and the Measurement of Economic Performance is designed to provide a comprehensive guide for students, researchers or consultants who wish to model, construct, interpret, and use economic performance measures. The topical emphasis is on productivity growth and its dependence on the cost structure. The methodological focus is on application of the tools of economic analysis - the `thinking structure' provided by microeconomic theory - to measure technological or cost structure, and link it with market and regulatory structure. This provides a rich basis for evaluation of economic performance and its determinants. The format of the book stresses topics or questions of interest rather than the theoretical tools for analysis. Traditional productivity growth modeling and measurement practices that result in a productivity residual often called the `measure of our ignorance' are initially overviewed, and then the different aspects of technological, market and regulatory structure that might underlie this residual are explored. The ultimate goal is to decompose or explain the residual, by modeling and measuring a multitude of impacts that determine the economic performance of firms, sectors, and economies. The chapters are organized with three broad goals in mind. The first is to introduce the overall ideas involved in economic performance measurement and traditional productivity growth analysis. Issues associated with different types of (short and long run, internal and external) cost economies, market and regulatory impacts, and other general cost efficiencies that might impact these measures are then explored. Finally, some of the theoretical, data construction and econometric tools necessary to justify and implement these models are emphasized.
