Book Bidi rolling in Rural Development

Download or read book Bidi rolling in Rural Development written by S. Giriappa and published by Daya Books. This book was released on 1987 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural development encompasses a wide range of activities and policy overtones directed at it usually specify development of agriculture, rural industries and allied sectors. Subsidy and relief measures have become essential ingredients of current policy aimed at developing different sectors and target groups. There are certain sectors where subsidy and relief measures are least necessary and economic incentives could make such sectors develop from the view points of employment and productivity. Bidi-rolling is one of such a sector. An attempt is made in this book to analyse its various aspects: labour absorption, female participation, contribution to rural development, etc. Based on secondary and primary sources of data and information, the study makes a good beginning for initiating a shift in policy options towards more productive sub-sectors within the rural economy which could speed up the process of rural development. Contents Chapter 1: Rural Development; Chapter 2: Bidi Industry; Chapter 3: Problem and Method; Chapter 4: Employment and Income Structure; Chapter 5: Consumption Expenditure; Chapter 6: Some Issues in Bidi Manufacturing; Chapter 7: Relationship Between Income and Other Variables; Chapter 8: The Impact of Bidi-rolling on Female-Headed Households; Chapter 9: Diversification and Integration; Chapter 10: Conclusions.

Book Globalising Everyday Consumption in India

Download or read book Globalising Everyday Consumption in India written by Bhaswati Bhattacharya and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-21 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together historical and ethnographic perspectives on Indian consumer identities. Through an in-depth analysis of local, regional, and national histories of marketing, regulatory bodies, public and domestic practices, this interdisciplinary volume charts the emergence of Indian consumer society and discusses commodity consumption as a main feature of Indian modernity. Nationalist discourse was shaped by moral struggles over consumption patterns that became a hallmark of middle-class identity. But a number of chapters demonstrate how a wide range of social strata were targeted as markets for everyday commodities associated with global lifestyles early on. A section of the book illustrates how a new group of professionals engaged in advertising trying to create a market shaped tastes and discourses and how campaigns provided a range of consumers with guidance on ‘modern lifestyles’. Chapters discussing advertisements for consumables like coffee and cooking oil, show these to be part of new public cultures. The ethnographic chapters focus on contemporary practices and consumption as a main marker of class, caste and community. Throughout the book consumption is shown to determine communal identities, but some chapters also highlight how it reshapes intimate relationships. The chapters explore the middle-class family, microcredit schemes, and metropolitan youth cultures as sites in which consumer citizenship is realised. The book will be of interest to readers from a range of disciplines, including anthropology, history, geography, sociology, South Asian studies, and visual cultures.

It is famously grown all over the Caribbean, where the warm, sunny conditions make for a perfect growing climate. Tobacco is usually smoked as a nicotinic stimulant and is mostly processed, rolled and dried before being smoked. Different geographies produce different types of the plant. The taste and flavor of the leaves are the characteristic trademarks of different types. The process of curing also determines the type of tobacco. Tobacco products include cigarettes, cigars, loose pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco and snuff. These products contain the dried, processed leaves of the tobacco plant nicotiana rustica or nicotiana tabacum. All tobacco contains nicotine, an addictive drug. Today’s tobacco also contains thousands of other chemicals designed to make the products more user-friendly and addictive. Nicotine is a nitrogen-based compound which dissolves in organic compounds. Tobacco leaves contain plenty of nicotine which evaporates on burning. This nitrogen-based compound is addictive in low amounts and toxic in high doses. Nicotine Sulfate is a potent pesticide, known for its high toxicity. A large proportion of Indian economy is agro based in which Tobacco is one of the principal cash crops. The tobacco production and its allied products’ sales in the country have played a prominent role in the development of nation’s economy.
