Book excerpt: A nurse who may be a murderer—and she’s the love of his life. Despite their twelve-year age difference, and all his efforts to forget her, green-eyed Lily Beller has imprisoned Dr. Darren Mansfield’s heart for the last five years. He left his father’s medical practice to avoid the too-young temptation, but now she’s inexplicably working at the same hospital as him. For the sake of his career and his sanity, he needs Lily gone. He also needs answers about the plague of horrific events that have started to further upend his life with all too coincidental timing. He doesn’t want to believe Lily is behind them, but all the evidence points to her. To complicate matters further, while his mind is focused on Lily, her roommate Jill becomes determined to win him. And if he was smart, he’d let her. Because Lily has a boyfriend—one who might be helping her punish Darren over a past he can’t atone for. Secrets, gaslighting, murder, obsessive love—everything is about to explode, and the damage may be irreversible.

Book excerpt: Ry Archer and Bowe Keller are as different as night and day. That doesn't mean they don't share similar struggles. At the moment, both are realizing the reality of getting closer and closer to reaching their dreams and aspirations is very much not living up to all the hype. The childhood cohorts always seem to connect when one of them needs help figuring out any of life's major puzzles, like figuring out why getting what you always thought you wanted isn't all it's cracked up to be. They might constantly rub each other the wrong way (except for when they rubbed each other really-really right), but there is no denying they've always made one hell of a great team. For Ry, he thought he had the perfect girl, the one who was going to run headfirst into a meticulously and methodically planned future. He was going to marry young and have the same kind of legendary, life-long romance his parents did... or so he believed. His girl was going to stand by his side as he chased his dream of being a professional football player all the way to the NFL. He was wrong. Now, Ry's gotta figure out the difference between a bruised heart and a broken one, and the only person who can teach him the difference is Bowe. Bowe always felt like she had to run before she learned to walk to keep up with her father's musical legacy. He's her hero, and she wants nothing more than to make him proud. Bowe's about to figure out that maybe she wasn't meant to be in a rock and roll band and that it is entirely possible she let her father's dream and road to success cloud her own idea of what making music should be. Bowe needs to find her own way to fame, and there's a good chance she wouldn't be brave enough or bold enough to start over if Ry Archer hadn't pushed his way back into her life when she least expected it. Some days they're enemies. Some days they're lovers. For a while, they were strangers. But now, it feels more like they might've always been soulmates. At the end of the day, both will realize that letting go of an old dream and creating a new one is much easier to do with the right person by your side.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Forest History Society's 2006 Charles A. Weyerhaeuser Book Award As a central figure in the American wilderness preservation movement in the mid-twentieth century, Howard Zahniser (1906-1964) was the person most responsible for the landmark Wilderness Act of 1964. While the rugged outdoorsmen of the earlyenvironmental movement, such as John Muir and Bob Marshall, gave the cause a charismatic face, Zahniser strove to bring conservation's concerns into the public eye and the preservationists' plans to fruition. In many fights to save besieged wild lands, he pulled together fractious coalitions, built grassroots support networks, wooed skittish and truculent politicians, and generated streams of eloquent prose celebrating wilderness. Zahniser worked for the Bureau of Biological Survey (a precursor to the Fish and Wildlife Service) and the Department of the Interior, wrote for Nature magazine, and eventually managed the Wilderness Society and edited its magazine, Living Wilderness. The culmination of his wilderness writing and political lobbying was the Wilderness Act of 1964. All of its drafts included his eloquent definition of wilderness, which still serves as a central tenet for the Wilderness Society: "an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain." The bill was finally signed into law shortly after his death. Pervading his tireless work was a deeply held belief in the healing powers of nature for a humanity ground down by the mechanized hustle-bustle of modern, urban life. Zahniser grew up in a family of Methodist ministers, and although he moved away from any specific denomination, a spiritual outlook informed his thinking about wilderness. His love of nature was not so much a result of scientific curiosity as a sense of wonder at its beauty and majesty, and a wish to exist in harmony with all other living things. In this deeply researched and affectionate portrait, Mark Harvey brings to life this great leader of environmental activism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to my fucking world. My name is Kaston Cox and I'm a criminal's worst nightmare. Most people run from darkness, but I live in it, require it, and thrive in the night. Some call me a monster, some a lover of evil, and others, the devil himself, but they're all wrong. I'm just a shadow in the dark. I speak for the innocent when no one else will. Once I have marked you, you better beg for forgiveness, because your time has run out... Revenge is the ultimate wage for evil. Some just can't stomach to do it themselves. That's where I come in. I am the ultimate judge when called upon for justice. I will decide who lives and who dies. Blood may be on my hands, but it's not the blood of the innocent. Remorse is nowhere to be found. I don't give a shit if you understand. I can live with the man I look at every day in the mirror. My soul was tainted the day I was conceived. You think you know me? You have no fucking idea. I am who I am because of what they did to her, and to him. They were my family. This was the only form of restitution he believed in. I owed him everything. I took over the empire he built. This is how I repay him. There was only one rule: never allow emotions to form. Numb and heartless are the only two ways to live. What I never included in the plan...was her. My name is Lux Larsen. My life is as perfect as it can get. I'm a partier, a seductress when it comes to something that I want, and the ultimate sexual con artist. I use my body to get what I want and I'm not ashamed. Designer tags are what I'm after. I love sex. I'm good at it. Fuck double standards. Guys can do it, well guess what, so can I. I will never be caught back on the other side of the tracks for as long as I live. I left that hellhole years ago. I'll do anything to stay away. You can call me a whore if you want, but I just look at it as I've decided to become a player in a man's game, and I'm a fucking pro at it. Love is for the weak minded. Weak is something I'll never be. I never anticipated the predator that would find me. I'm now his prey...but I'm not sure I can run. The world likes to think that love is only pure, only for those that do good, but what no one considers is when bad has to be done to formulate a different type of good. Two of the most random people can be a perfect match, being placed together like pieces to a puzzle. Being in the wrong place at the right time can be terrifying and it can also be exactly what is supposed to happen, because sometimes...love is born in the dark.

Rather, he learned them in the past few years, working on his own and practicing on the subway, using simple techniques and free online resources—and here he wants to show others what he’s discovered. Starting with pronunciation, you’ll learn how to rewire your ears and turn foreign sounds into familiar sounds. You’ll retrain your tongue to produce those sounds accurately, using tricks from opera singers and actors. Next, you’ll begin to tackle words, and connect sounds and spellings to imagery rather than translations, which will enable you to think in a foreign language. And with the help of sophisticated spaced-repetition techniques, you’ll be able to memorize hundreds of words a month in minutes every day. Download or read book Making the Forever War written by Mark Philip Bradley and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late historian Marilyn B. Young, a preeminent voice on the history of U.S. military conflict, spent her career reassessing the nature of American global power, its influence on domestic culture and politics, and the consequences felt by those on the receiving end of U.S. military force. At the center of her inquiries was a seeming paradox: How can the United States stay continually at war, yet Americans pay so little attention to this militarism? Making the Forever War brings Young's articles and essays on American war together for the first time, including never before published works. Moving from the first years of the Cold War to Korea, Vietnam, and more recent "forever" wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Young reveals the ways in which war became ever-present, yet more covert and abstract, particularly as aerial bombings and faceless drone strikes have attained greater strategic value. For Young, U.S. empire persisted because of, not despite, the inattention of most Americans. The collection concludes with an afterword by prominent military historian Andrew Bacevich.
