Book excerpt: For the last 50 years, Clive James has been writing remarkable songs – witty, moving, sometimes satirical, often thrillingly poetic – with his musical partner, Pete Atkin. They’ve written more than 200 together, releasing the first album of their work in 1970 and the last in 2015. John Peel loved them. So did Kenny Everett. Stephen Fry is a huge fan. And Clive himself believes these songs are the best things he’s ever done. Loose Canon explores the sparkling lyrics and brilliantly memorable tunes that have won Clive and Pete a fanatical cult following but still managed to remain the British music industry's best-kept secret. Stephen Fry has written an incredibly generous and enthusiastic foreword.

The volume explores four key aspects of modernist literature and criticism that have contributed to the new modernist studies: women's contributions to modernism; masculinities; sexuality; and the intersection of gender and sexuality with politics and law. Including brief case studies of such writers as May Sinclair and Radclyffe Hall, this book is a valuable guide for those looking to understand the history of critical thought on gender and sexuality in modernist studies today.

Book The Twentieth Century World 1914 to the Present

Download or read book The Twentieth Century World 1914 to the Present written by John C. Corbally and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twentieth-Century World, 1914 to the Present introduces students to five distinct historical themes in 20th century history - politics, economics, religion, technology and the environment. Each of these themes is set in a social and cultural history framework that emphasizes the commonalities and diversity in human experiences throughout the recent era. This is a genuinely global textbook that takes a non-nationalistic approach to history and attempts to avoid marginalising the role of non-western actors and societies. John Corbally explores the connections, interactions and exploitations of global resources and peoples that were part and parcel of 20th-century history. Economically, the book shows how people were connected by the spread of global capitalism and communism. It explores the spread of traditional religions and philosophies all over the globe, as well as looking at secular challenges. It also considers how technology reached further into people's lives. Ideal for undergraduate level students of 20th-century history, this is a book that offers a balanced, multi-perspective approach to recent global history, helping the 21st-century student understand today's world and interrogate commonly held assumptions about its history.

Book Substance Abuse and Addiction

Download or read book Substance Abuse and Addiction written by Randolph R. Estwick and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sad faces of abuse and addiction in poor and deprived communities and spread to affluent and insulated suburbs are exposed. The epidemic has invaded rural and farming communities and our school systems, where the drug pushers and victims are the very students; abuse affecting seniors and minorities at some facilities were also exposed as well as illicit prescribing, which resulted in arrests, and convictions were given full coverage. War on drugs, a disappointment in spite of near trillion spent on eradication, interception, and erection of physical barriers. Communities already saturated by illicit drugs and addiction, flooded with fentanyl distributed in excess of prescription needs only to enhance profits and bonuses; no probity shown for health and safety of human beings. Pros and cons of legalizing marijuana and the debilitating effects of tobacco and alcohol examined. Border patrols were applauded. Disparity in drug sentencing and incarceration criticized. Children born of addicted parents summarized, and treatment of abuse and addiction as illness was defended. The author postulates that solution to the drug explosion lies within homes and communities, not in poppy fields of Central and South America. Death penalty, a knee-jerk reaction, always exempts the kingpins and producers. It solves nothing.
