This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carolyn Wells wrote a total of more than 170 books. During the first ten years of her career, she concentrated on poetry, humor, and children's books. According to her autobiography, The Rest of My Life (1937), she heard That Affair Next Door (1897), one of Anna Katharine Green's mystery novels, being read aloud and was immediately captivated by the unraveling of the puzzle. From that point onward she devoted herself to the mystery genre. Among the most famous of her mystery novels were the Fleming Stone Detective Stories which-according to Allen J. Hubin's Crime Fiction IV: A Comprehensive Bibliography, 1749-2000 (2003)-number 61 titles. Wells's The Clue (1909) is on the Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone list of essential mysteries. She was also the first to conduct a (brief, in this case) annual series devoted to the best short crime fiction of the previous year in the U.S., beginning with The Best American Mystery Stories of the Year (1931) (though others had begun a similar British series in 1929).Marjorie Maynard is a 12 year old American girl, mischievous, fun and always ready to get into trouble. Book excerpt: This affecting ditty was being sung with great gusto by King and Marjorie, while Kitty, her mood divided between smiles and tears, was quietly appreciative. The very next day, Kitty was to start for Morristown, to spend the summer with Grandma Sherwood, and to-night the "Farewell Feast" was to be celebrated. Every year one of the Maynard children spent the summer months with their grandmother, and this year it was Kitty's turn. The visit was always a pleasant one, and greatly enjoyed by the small visitor, but there was always a wrench at parting, for the Maynard family were affectionate and deeply devoted to one another.

Book excerpt: Marjorie was coming downstairs in her own sweet way, which was accomplished byputting her two feet close together, and jumping two steps at a time. It didn't expedite herdescent at all, but it was delightfully noisy, and therefore agreeable from Marjorie's point ofview. The May-day was undeniably beautiful. It was warm enough to have doors and windowsflung open, and the whole house was full of May that had swarmed in from out of doors. The air was soft and fragrant, the leaves were leaving out, the buds were budding, and thespring was springing everywhere. The big gold bushes of the Forsythia were masses of yellow bloom; crocuses popped upthrough the grass; a few birds had begun to sing, and the sun shone as if with a settleddetermination to push the spring ahead as fast as he could. Moreover it was Saturday, which was the best proof of all, of an intelligent and wellbehaved Spring. For a May-day which knew enough to fall on a Saturday was a satisfactoryMay-day, indeed!Of course there was to be a May party, and of course it was to be at theMaynards', because Marjorie always claimed that the whole month of Maybelonged to their family, and she improved every shining hour of theMaytime.
