Book Maritime Security in Southern African Waters

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two thirds of the world population lies within 60 kilometres of the sea. Much of the well-being of our planet is dependent on the sea, as the bulk of international trade passes across oceans and through ports, while the sea is a rich source of protein and contains profound wealth in terms of energy and natural sources. Inevitably, economic stability and development are therefore closely linked to maritime security. This volume contains a selection of papers presented at an international conference on ?Maritime Security in Southern African Waters? in Stellenbosch on 22-23 July 2008.

Book State Security in South Africa

Download or read book State Security in South Africa written by James Michael Roherty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1992 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a study of civil-military relations in the Republic of South Africa while Pieter Willem Botha was prime minister (1978-89). The author's controversial thesis is that Prime Minister Botha, recognizing that his country had reached the historical juncture when it needed to establish a new political order encompassing all of its diverse peoples, moved effectively to prepare the ground for fundamental constitutional change. What was needed above all were stabilization measures to assure the support of the white population for reform. Botha used the South African defence force as his primary instrument. By 1989, Professor Roherty maintains, a striking degree of stabilization had been achieved within the country and throughout South Africa, and the groundwork for epochal change had been prepared. The author makes use of exclusive interviews with South Africans from the political, military, intelligence, corporate, and academic worlds.

Book Capacity Building for Maritime Security

Download or read book Capacity Building for Maritime Security written by Christian Bueger and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-09 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies recent attempts to restructure maritime security sectors through capacity building. It innovates both theoretically and empirically. It proposes a new framework for understanding maritime capacity building, drawing on work in peacebuilding and security sector reform. The framework is then applied across empirical case studies from the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region written by scholars from the Global South. The WIO region is a paradigmatic case to study maritime security and capacity building in action. Countries in the region face the full gamut of maritime security challenges, while their indigenous capacities to deal with these are often weak. In consequence, the region functions as an engine of innovation for maritime capacity building more widely. The lessons and best practices from the region have importance consequences for addressing maritime security across the globe.

Book Defensive Restructuring of the Armed Forces in Southern Africa

Download or read book Defensive Restructuring of the Armed Forces in Southern Africa written by Bjørn Møller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1997, the work explores the reorientation of security policies and the accompanying restructuring of the armed forces going on in Southern Africa under entirely new circumstances: Democracy has come to South Africa, the civil wars in Angola and Mozambique have ended, and the region is establishing a regional framework for cooperation. While covering the entire region, a special focus is placed on South Africa which is predestined to play a leading role, but which is struggling with the legacy of the apartheid regime and its repeated aggressions against neighbouring states. A defensive restructuring of the South African of the South African military is an element in the building of mutual trust. The implications of such defensive restructuring to a non-offensive defence are described in detail. In addition to the analytical contribution, the work also contains central documents and a bibliography.

Book India and South Africa

Download or read book India and South Africa written by Manoj Kumar and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years South Africa has become more important in the security and geostrategic considerations due to globalization and multilateralism in new world order. The end of Cold War and Apartheid marked the change of environment for South African diplomatic relations with India. India's has maintained economic, strategic and security relations at two levels, firstly through multilateral organizations like BRICS and IBSA and bilaterally. The cooperation in the field of security and military is primarily at bilateral levels, the cooperation mainly focused on joint naval exercises in context of maritime security for keeping the Sea Lanes of Communications free and secure and defence manufacturing. South Africa is one of the most important countries which have considerable influence over other countries of African continent and if India has to make its presence in Africa it has to work in close cooperation with South Africa.

Book The Naval War in South African Waters 1939 1945

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Naval War in South African Waters, 1939-1945 provides a critical reappraisal of the naval war waged in South African waters during the Second World War. The book investigates this broad topic by focussing on several interrelated aspects such as: the wartime strategic importance of South African waters; the rival Axis and Allied naval strategies in the southern oceans; the development of the South African coastal defence system; the full extent of the Axis naval operations in the southern oceans; the naval intelligence war; and, finally, the antisubmarine war waged in South African waters. Based on extensive archival research in South Africa and the United Kingdom, and supplemented by a wealth of secondary material, the book introduces a fresh, in-depth discussion on a largely forgotten episode of South African military history.
