Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equality between husbands and wives is recognized - in theory - as being beneficial to the well-being of a family. However, empirical research over the past two decades indicates that the advantage is `his' rather than `hers': the vast majority of married women still bears a disproportionate responsibility for work related to relationships, home and children. This book examines why, while women's roles have expanded at an astonishing rate, the critical need for a more egalitarian style of relating has not been met. The author maintains that motivation to seek change stems from people perceiving inequality as unfair, and that this perception can be impeded by gender differences in sense of entitlement.

Book A Theoretical Framework of Interracial Couple Relationship Success

Download or read book A Theoretical Framework of Interracial Couple Relationship Success written by Sharon Luu Deitz and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study proposes a theoretical model of Interracial Couple Relationship Success and empirically tests a portion of the model in which ethnic identity is linked to relationship satisfaction for Black-White interracial couples. Data were collected from 185 heterosexual Black-White marital couples in the United States. An actor-partner interdependence model (APIM) was used to test the direct and indirect effects of ethnic identity to relationship satisfaction via self-esteem and problem-solving skills. The results indicated ethnic identity of both Black and White partners was related to Black but not White partners self-esteem. Findings also revealed significant indirect pathways from Black partners self-esteem to their own relationship satisfaction via effective problem-solving skills. The indirect pathway from Black partners self-esteem to partner relationship satisfaction was also mediated by partner perceptions of problem-solving in the relationship. The results of this study informs the continued development of the of Interracial Couple Relationship Success model and offers data regarding the role of identity and individual well-being in the context of interracial relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marital satisfaction is viewed as a socially constructed reality having a direct impact on the physical, mental, emotional and social well-being of partners in a marriage. Just as marital satisfaction is vital to a couple's well-being, marital dissatisfaction can be distressing to a couple. Instances of research on relevant topics have been found in abundance in the west. However, this study is an attempt to expand the existing literature to the east and provide dovetail conclusions about the levels of marital satisfaction among couples in Pakistan. This study developed a validated screening scale with local norms called "The Marital Satisfaction Scale (MSS)" that would provide appropriate guidelines to the mental health care professionals and marriage counselors for the treatment of dissatisfied married couples. This study explored twelve subscales i.e. In-laws relationship, Communication, Husband's Financial Status, Compromise, Understanding, Spouse Support, Self-Perception, Dual Earning, Mutual Understanding, Education of Partner, Sexual Satisfaction, & Gender Difference, which relates to overall marital satisfaction.

Book A Survey of the Marital Satisfaction of African American Couples at North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship

Download or read book A Survey of the Marital Satisfaction of African American Couples at North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship written by Leslie W. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this applied research project was to assess the marital satisfaction of a volunteer group of mostly African American couples at North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship, compare the results of these assessments with results of a national phone survey and other empirical studies, and based upon the findings, determine the ministry implications for the church. This project began with and draws much of its foundation from a survey of biblical and professional literature related to marriage and divorce. The cornerstone of this research effort was a survey instrument designed by Scott M. Stanley and Howard Markman entitled Marriage in the 90s: A Nationwide Random Phone Survey. The survey was completed by over 100 African American marriage participants who are members of North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship. The results of the church survey were compared to the actual survey done by Stanley and Markman. The conclusion of this project underscores the fact that marriage was ordained by God and rests solidly upon a theological foundation. It also affirms that the conflict that is prevalent in marriage has its source in the spiritual realm, and consequently the solution must be found in the spiritual realm. This was found to be true for white couples and African American couples, even though African American famiies are best with a number of marital variable that are unique to the Africian American context.

Book Marital Instability

Download or read book Marital Instability written by Joseph Veroff and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1995-06-27 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What factors influence the relationship of a newly married couple? Do these factors change as the marriage matures? The authors of this book examine the determinants of marital instability in the early years of marriage. Conclusions are based on the results of a survey of 199 black couples and 174 white couples throughout the first four years of marriage. Findings focus on attitudes, perceptions, and feelings spouses have for each other and the manner in which they interact. Some of the topics discussed in the survey include: length of courtship, educational differences, religion, and family involvement. The findings show what effect these and other factors have on a marriage.

Book The Moderating Role of Problem Solving in Black White Marriages

Download or read book The Moderating Role of Problem Solving in Black White Marriages written by María Mercedes Dominguez and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black-White couples have the highest rate of divorce compared to other interracial pairings in the U.S. (Zhang & Hook, 2009). Given the racial climate in the United States that privileges White people (Burton et al., 2010; Hardy & Laszloffy, 2008; Killian, 2012), and the on-going opposition to Black-White unions (Pew Research Center, 2017), it is reasonable to expect that Black-White couples experience elevated stress from direct and indirect forms of racial discrimination. In order to identify factors that may help boost the resilience of non- divorced Black-White couples, this study used the Vulnerability Stress Adaptation (VSA) model of marriage (Karney & Bradbury, 1995) to better understand how problem-solving skills may buffer the impact of racial discrimination experienced by Black-White couples on marital satisfaction. The study included 178 Black-White heterosexual couples between the ages of 18 and 40. A common fate moderation analysis investigated whether problem-solving served as a mechanism through which Black-White couples were able to cultivate marital satisfaction despite the detrimental outcomes of discrimination experienced as an interracial couple. Results indicated that experiences of couple discrimination were negatively related to marital satisfaction and that couples' problem-solving skills buffered the extent discrimination impacted couples' marital satisfaction. The results have implications for therapists working with Black-White couples whether married or intending to marry. Research should further explore the impact discrimination experienced by interracial couples has on other aspects of relationships as well as on mental and physical health.

Book The Impact of Racial Identity and Level of Religiosity on Marital Satisfaction Among African American Married Couples

Download or read book The Impact of Racial Identity and Level of Religiosity on Marital Satisfaction Among African American Married Couples written by Sabrina Townsend and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study examined marital satisfaction and determined if racial identity or level of religiosity had an impact overall on marital satisfaction among married African American couples. The following instruments were used to measure marital satisfaction, racial identity, level of religiosity, and social desirability: the Marital Satisfaction Inventory- Revised (Snyder, 1997), Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity (Sellers, Rowley, Chavous, Shelton, & Smith, 1998), Religious Life Inventory (Batson, Schoenrade & Ventis, 1993), and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (Reynolds, 1982). The majority of the 140 participants consisted of married couples recruited from three major Christian churches in Philadelphia, a local insurance company, and from multiple community based organizations. Results indicate that no single factor alone is predictive of marital satisfaction but a combination of factors produced a moderately significant multiple correlation. Significant relationships were found among marital satisfaction and the following factors: number of children, multiple subscales on the MIBI, and the external subscale on the Religious Life Inventory. Couples who had more children reported higher levels of marital satisfaction. Results also showed a significant relationship between marital satisfaction in couples who had similar views on racial identity when subscales were used as the sole measure of marital satisfaction and racial identity. Finally, there was a significant relationship between couples who report higher levels of marital satisfaction and also use religion as a means to satisfy their own needs through socialization, etc.
