Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was prepared in an attempt to clarify seemingly contradictory interpretations of the early history of the discovery of North America, as well as to survey the early historical sources which may contribute to an ethno-historical study of the Indians of those coasts first explored. A major part of the book is devoted to a re-analysis of the cartographical materials and to an attempt to present a more logical interpretation of this material. In the course of this attempt the work discusses and rejects previously widely held viewpoints concerning the early exploration of North America and the development of North American cartography. A new hypothesis is presented in this respect and is shown to fit the available evidence more adequately. The study also reconsiders the documentary materials deriving from the Cartier voyages and develops new conclusions concerning their origin, particularly with respect to the so-called "Cartier vocabularies." This is a pioneer summary and original analysis based upon exhaustive research, and is the most comprehensive collation available to scholars; in combination with the recent map bibliography published by the Public Archives, it will be of great aid to research students. Dr. Hoffman's hypotheses are brilliantly presented and highly stimulating. The line-cut illustrations and listing of nomenclature are most valuable.

Book Terrestrial Celestial Globes

Download or read book Terrestrial Celestial Globes written by Edward Luther Stevenson and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents one of the very first detailed and comprehensive historical treatises on globes terrestrial and celestial in English language since the numerous works published before its appearance tended to give only a very general consideration to the uses of globes, including a reference to their important structural features, and to the problems geographical and astronomical in the solution of which they may be counted of service. The aim of this study was to treat the subject historically, beginning with the earliest references to the belief in a spherical earth and a spherical firmament encircling it, and it was inspired by the author's hope that the preliminary study may lead to a number of independent and thorough investigations of important individual examples, to the end of clearly setting forth their great documentary value. Book Asia in the Making of Europe Volume I

Download or read book Asia in the Making of Europe Volume I written by Donald F. Lach and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-07-15 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praised for its scope and depth, Asia in the Making of Europe is the first comprehensive study of Asian influences on Western culture. For volumes I and II, the author has sifted through virtually every European reference to Asia published in the sixteenth-century; he surveys a vast array of writings describing Asian life and society, the images of Asia that emerge from those writings, and, in turn, the reflections of those images in European literature and art. This monumental achievement reveals profound and pervasive influences of Asian societies on developing Western culture; in doing so, it provides a perspective necessary for a balanced view of world history. Volume I: The Century of Discovery brings together "everything that a European could know of India, Southeast Asia, China, and Japan, from printed books, missionary reports, traders' accounts and maps" (The New York Review of Books). Volume II: A Century of Wonder examines the influence of that vast new body of information about Asia on the arts, institutions, literatures, and ideas of sixteenth-century Europe.
