Book Marine Microfouling in Monterey Harbor

Download or read book Marine Microfouling in Monterey Harbor written by James Earl Taylor and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using scanning electron microscope techniques, the author examined the succession of microorganisms which constitute the marine microfouling community in Monterey Harbor, California, upon stainless steel substrates. He found that solitary diatoms appeared during the first 4 hours and became numerous by 48 hours of immersion. They were followed by colonial diatoms which appeared during the first 24 hours and by hydroids and bryozoans during the first 96 hours. Bacteria first became evident upon substrates which had been immersed for 48 hours. A well-established community, including, metazoa, and many unidentified forms was formed during the first 3 weeks of immersion. Observations of microfouling upon aluminum, brass, and copper substrates were obscured by the formation of a thick crust, possibly of corrosion products.

Book Marine Fouling Organisms in Monterey Harbor California June Through September 1966

Download or read book Marine Fouling Organisms in Monterey Harbor California June Through September 1966 written by Thomas Leroy Miller and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine fouling organisms occurring on test panels of various substances and at several locations and depths in the Monterey Harbor, California, were studied for identification and significance. Some panels were immersed for the entire length of the study--June 10 to September 16, 1966; others, mainly plywood, were immersed only for month-long periods throughout the study. Barnacles, bryozoans, and serpulids were the major fouling organisms in the inner harbor, while hydroids were most significant in the outer harbor. The barnacles reached maximum attachment in June and July, but were covered later by bryozoans. Phoronid worms were abundant in August and September on the shallow panels in the inner harbor. Fouling increased with depth and distance away from direct sunlight. Fibrous masonite and wood panels were the best collecting surfaces and stainless steel the worst. (Author).

Book A Study of Marine Fouling in Monterey Harbor

Download or read book A Study of Marine Fouling in Monterey Harbor written by Durwand Belmont Mommsen and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observations were made on the marine fouling occuring on test panels In Monterey Harbor dUring the period January 26 to Aprl I 21, 1966. Test p s of various materials were placed at three depths. Observations were made on plywood panels exposed for four weeks, Immersed at two week intervals, at just below the mean tow tide level to determine the change in rate of attachment offouUng organisms during the test period. Observations were a Iso made on the amount of fou Illllgoccuring on dl fferelllt test materials at the same depth and on the same test material at different depths. The most 1mportantshort-term fouling organisms in Monterey Harbor were found to be barnacles, bryo'zoa, serpulids and hydrolds. The number of barnaCles attaching to test palllets reached a peak in early April allld then dectlned. The amount of fouling on the test panels increased with depth. Wood was determined to be the best surface for collecting and ob~ervrng marine fouling organisms.

Test panels of various materials were placed at three depths. Observations were made on plywood panels exposed for four weeks, immersed at two week intervals, at just below the mean low tide level to determine the change in rate of attachment of fouling organisms during the test period. Observations were also made on the amount of fouling occuring on different test materials at the same depth and on the same test material at different depths. The most important short-term fouling organisms in Monterey Harbor were found to be barnacles, bryozoa, serpulids and hydroids. The number of barnacles attaching to test panels reached a peak in early April and then declined. The amount of fouling on the test panels increased with depth. Wood was determined to be the best surface for collecting and observing marine fouling organisms. (Author).

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by W. H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 22 (thesis year 1977) a total of 10,658 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 227 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 22 reports theses submitted in 1977, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
