Book excerpt: Marine fungi play a major role in marine and mangrove ecosystems. Understanding how higher fungi with their spectrum of cellulolytic and ligninolytic enzymes degrade wood tissue, while labyrinthuloids and thraustochytrids further contribute to the dissolved organic matter entering the open ocean is essential to marine ecology. This work provides an overview of marine fungi including morphology and ultrastructure, phylogeny, biogeography and biodiversity. Increasingly, biotechnology is also turning to these organisms to develop new bioactive compounds and to address problems such as decomposition of materials in the ocean and bioremediation of oil spills. These potential applications of marine fungi are also treated. In the light of massive marine oil spills in the past years, the importance of understanding marine fungi and their role in the food chain cannot be underestimated.

Book Asia Pacific Symposium on Mangrove Ecosystems

Download or read book Asia Pacific Symposium on Mangrove Ecosystems written by Yuk-Shan Wong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mangrove ecosystems are typical formations found in coastal deposits of mud and silt throughout the tropics and some distance into the subtropical latitudes. The total wordwide mangrove area, which is estimated at about 170,000 km2 with some sixty species of trees and shrubs exclusive to the habitat, dominates approximately 75% of the world's coastline between latitudes 25°N and 25°S. Such unique intertidal ecosystems support genetically diverse communities of terrestrial and aquatic organisms that are of direct or indirect socioeconomic values. Mangrove forests play important roles as coastal stabilization and protection against winds and storms; producers of nutrients, forest resources and animal species of economic importance. Recently, the issues on the conservation, proper utilization and management of mangrove forests have been widely discussed. Unfortunately, overexploitation and destruction of mangroves seriously threatens the sustainability of such a unique ecosystem. This volume includes papers on three main areas: recent advances in mangrove ecology; application and utilization of mangrove resources; and conservation and management of the ecosystems.

Book Microbial Diversity

Download or read book Microbial Diversity written by T. Satyanarayana and published by I. K. International Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2005 with total page 1159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbial Diversity: Current Perspectives and Potential Applications is woven around the recent global perceptions of microbial diversity in its all embracing facets. Diversity perspectives are discussed in the context of ecosystem dynamics, taking into consideration environments that are rather unique to microorganisms. Considerable thrust is placed on the role that microorganisms play in sustainable production systems. Microbe-plant interaction arena is highlighted through the discussion of mycorrhizal partners, on which depends not only the plant community structure but also abatement of abiotic and biotic stresses. Other mutualist, rhizobia gets its due coverage whereas plant disease component carries examples from both, fungal and viral disease point of view. Considerable emphasis is placed on a discussion of the environmental issues such as the approaches that will lead to newer bioremediation technologies. No discussion of microbial diversity is complete without their implications in animal and human health. Discussed in this context are L-arginases in cancer therapy as also bioactives from cyanobacteria. Genomics and pathogenicity of two groups of viruses, viz., blue tongue and flaviviruses is highlighted whereas keratinophilic fungal forms are discussed in the context of dermatophytic infections. This volume also carries a fair number of articles on commercial microbiology.

Book Marine Mycology

  • Author : Jan Kohlmeyer
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2013-10-22
  • ISBN : 1483270149
  • Pages : 705 pages

Download or read book Marine Mycology written by Jan Kohlmeyer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Mycology: The Higher Fungi deals with the higher marine fungi, i.e., Ascomycotina, Basidiomycotina, and Deuteromycotina. This book combines features of a monograph with those of a text. It includes sections on ecological groups of fungi and other topics, such as phylogeny, ontogeny, physiology, and vertical and geographical distribution, providing information on known facts and open questions. The taxonomic-descriptive part contains complete descriptions of each genus and species, together with substrates, range, etymology of generic and specific names, and literature. There are keys for all species within a given genus, and a general illustrated key leads to the individual species. The taxonomic section is based on examinations of almost all of the filamentous marine fungi, and unpublished data on new hosts and geographical distributions are included for many species. The filamentous higher marine fungi are represented by 149 Ascomycetes, 4 Basidiomycetes, and 56 Deuteromycetes. The majority, namely 191 (91%) of the filamentous fungi, are obligately marine species, whereas the remainder are facultatively marine. One new species and seven new combinations are proposed. The yeasts are treated in a separate chapter and comprise 177 species or varieties.
