Book Unravelling Supply Chain Networks of Fisheries in India

Download or read book Unravelling Supply Chain Networks of Fisheries in India written by Meenakshi Rajeev and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on the fisheries sector in India, through primary surveys as well as secondary literature, brings out various nuances of the sector and its trade opportunities, the complexities surrounding the supply chain of fish, as well as the evolution of its marketing channels. A distinctive feature of this book is that it carries out a comprehensive mapping of the fisheries supply chain, by taking into account both marine and freshwater fish. It identifies various players, especially traders who take part in the product flow, irrespective of the impact each of them has on the value provided to the end customer. While members of the supply chain include all individuals or organisations between whom interaction takes place, directly or indirectly from the point of production to consumption, this study also distinguishes between primary and peripheral members to make a complex network more manageable. Moreover, the book provides a comprehensive analysis of the emerging marketing channels- both organised and unorganised- in this highly perishable food segment. It provides important insights into the current scenario, focusing on the emergence of newer forms of marketing such as multinationals and e-retailing, while highlighting how traditional forms such as ‘mom-and-pop’ shops have continued to sustain, despite the challenges they face. The findings from India are also compared to global experiences of other fish producing and exporting countries such as Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Thailand to offer a comparison of the differences and similarities in the supply chains of various countries. The book provides important takeaways for researchers and PhD scholars working in the area of fisheries as well as supply chains. Since this book is based on field visits to different parts of the country it brings out the ground realities along with interesting insights and important policy implications for the sector, and should, therefore, appeal to policymakers as well.

Download or read book Analysis of the bottlenecks of marine fish supply chain in Sri Lanka written by Wasantha Herath and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-06-29 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, , language: English, abstract: Supply Chain Management and Logistics are the most significant factors for the commercial marine fish supply chain; the study has considered only the Marine Fish Supply Chain (MFSC) for local markets in Sri Lanka. The Supply Chain helps to assess the efficiency of the marketing and distribution system while finding ways to improve well-performed and efficient supply chain management. Objectives were established to analyse marine fish supply chain, its main aspects, and actors and bottlenecks in the local market, understanding and analysing of preventive measurements of bottlenecks to give recommendations. Main bottlenecks are lack of marketing strategies, market structure constrains, lack of proper information flow, and inadequate infrastructure facilities. The study used two data types for the analysis as primary data and secondary data. Primary data was gathered from the responders, i.e. fishermen, consumers, and locations such as primary, wholesale, and retail markets. Secondary data were gathered from government institutions’ reports, text books, printed journals, e-journals, and websites. Recommendations were made according to the findings, which can be used as the corrective and preventive measures. The study analysed data using most suitable analytical methods including fishbone analysis, marketing margin, marketing efficiency index, average net share of the consumer price, and fisherman share of one consumer rupee. Fishermen are assured of a fair price for harvest, the best quality preferred species for affordable prices for consumers, consumer satisfaction, elimination of stagnant position of supply chain, and higher contribution for the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The value chain concept addresses various problems being faced by the fisheries sector and its stakeholders. Value chain management enables the policy makers to analyze and assess the marine fisheries sector in a better way and can make the sector more promising and contribute to the development of the economy. The main aim of this study was to analyze various value added operations performed upon the marine fish at the retail point and to examine whether there was any impact of value added operations on the final retail price of marine fish. The primary data of marine fishery retail value chain was collected from the marine fish retailers existing in coastal Andhra Pradesh, India. Finally, it was concluded that there was a difference in price of the marine fish after performing value chain by the retailer. This paper also proposed a retail value chain model for marine fish.

Book Seafood Supply Chains

Download or read book Seafood Supply Chains written by Miriam Greenwood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-16 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a historical and analytical account of changes in the seafood supply chain in Britain from the mid-twentieth century to the present, looking at the impact of various types of governance. The governance of marine fisheries has been a contested issue for decades with increasing anxieties about overfishing. In tandem, the rise of aquaculture, fish and shellfish farming, has driven another set of environmental concerns. In the food system, there have been scandals about safety failures and about fraud. At the same time, governments issue advice urging people to eat fish for its health benefits. In the context of these problems and contradictions, how have governments, the food industry and ordinary consumers responded? The author shows how different types of governance and regulation have been used to seek seafood sustainability and food safety and to communicate nutritional messages to the public and with what effects. The book also presents a new model for understanding food chains which combines governance and power approaches with an emphasis on understanding the interests served and the resulting balance of public and private benefits. This shows that the role of state regulation should have greater emphasis in governance and agri-food analysis and that theories about supply chain functioning, including the part played by major retailers and civil society, should be modified by a more nuanced understanding of the role of standards and certification systems. Although much of the focus is on the UK and Europe, this book provides key lessons internationally for the governance of seafood and other agri-food supply chains. The book will be of interest to students of food policy and those working in the seafood industry or studying for connected qualifications, and more widely to readers with an interest in seafood issues and problems.

Book Supply Chain Management in Fisheries

Download or read book Supply Chain Management in Fisheries written by B. S. Viswanatha and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supply Chain Management (SCM) includes the physical and money flows from producer to consumer. India produces around 7 million tonnes of fish annually.Inefficient supply chain has been the major problem facing Indian fishery industry. Bangalore, the capital city of Karnataka has five fish markets and the present study of SCM of freshwater fishes was restricted to three markets viz: Russell market,City market and Yeshwanthpur market. The objectives of the present study were to identify supply chain of freshwater fish, estimating price-spread,cost of operation of intermediaries, consumer purchasing behavior, and identifying constraints in supply chain and suggesting suitable measures.Information was collected from wholesalers, retailers and consumers through pretested interview schedules. Constraints identified in SCM were increased marketing costs, lack of storage facilities, absence of market information, inventory losses, delayed supply, poor quality, and unhygienic condition in fish markets. Important suggestions to overcome the constraints include reducing the number of intermediaries, ensuring food safety, modernizing fish selling outlets and updated market information system.

Book The marine seafood export supply chain in India

Book excerpt: The third section examines the bottom of the supply chain, i.e., the state of the landing centres and the fishermen. [...] The views expressed are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of the organization. [...] Understanding the sustainability of the fishing industry must also include the study of each component of the supply chain, of problems at the bottom levels in the supply chain, of the viability of supply chain certifications in promoting sustainability-such as Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) label-and the influence of importer country regulations in the fisheries sector. [...] Those between the agent and the supplier are borne by the supplier, while those between the supplier and exporter are borne by the supplier. [...] The exporter is the price setter-the prices move downwards from the exporter to the supplier, to the agent and then to the fisherman on a daily basis.
