Book Eggs and larvae of common marine fish species of northwest Africa

Download or read book Eggs and larvae of common marine fish species of northwest Africa written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-09-22 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide presents the egg and larval descriptions of 150 species of fishes belonging to 57 families, which are most likely to be present in plankton samples collected in the continental shelf and oceanic waters off northwest Africa. The guide is structured in two parts. The first introductory part describes the different applications of ichthyoplankton studies in fisheries research and management, and fish population ecology, the main sampling strategies, methods and gears, and the problems related to sample representativeness. It also describes the early life history of fishes, and how to identify them. A brief description of the hydrography of the study area is also presented. The second part of the guide features the species identification sheets. Each species sheet includes the following information: an illustration of the adult fish and information on its distribution, habitat, spawning season, and meristic characters; a description of the main features useful towards identifying the egg, yolk-sac and larval stages; and illustrations and photos of different larval stages. Finally, the guide provides a comprehensive list of references.

Book The Early Life History of Fish

Download or read book The Early Life History of Fish written by J.H.S. Blaxter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plans for an International Symposium on the Early Life History of Fish were first discussed in 1967 at the F. A. O. Advisory Committee on Marine Resources Research {A. C. M. R. R. }. It was considered that studies on fish eggs and larvae were of value in estimating the size of fish stocks, in appraising the stock-recruitment relationship, and in helping to answer questions on the systematics and taxonomy of fish. An A. C. M. R. R. Working Party recommended in 1969 that a Symposium should be held and after discussion with the International Associa tion of Biological Oceanography {I. A. B. O. } Dr. J. H. S. Blaxter of the Scottish Marine Biological Association {S. M. B. A. } agreed to con vene the meeting with the help of a steering committee. Various in ternational agencies were interested in the meeting and agreed to sponsor it in various ways. These agencies included F. A. O. , I. A. B. O. , the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea {I. C. E. S. } and the Scientific Committee for Oceanic Research {S. C. O. R. }. In the final event F. A. O. supported the meeting by publishing the abstracts beforehand, providing travel funds for participants and publishing a report after the meeting. I. A. B. O. and S. C. O. R. provided travel funds and the Royal Society of London and S. M. B. A.

Book excerpt: Over the past few years, it has become more and more obvious that fish farming will become increasingly important in the future. As fish farming moves into its industrial phase, technology will be an important factor in determining its successful development. It is therefore important for scientists & representatives from the aquaculture industry to meet to define state of the art and explore future development of fish farming technology for different fish species. 81 papers and abstracts were presented at the conference. The proceedings reflect the different sections of the conference: the plenum sessions and three parallel sessions: Juvenile marine fish, open production plants, closed production plants and poster sessions.

Book Culture of Cold Water Marine Fish

Download or read book Culture of Cold Water Marine Fish written by Erlend Moksness and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the continuing decline of commercial stocks of wild-caught fish, the interest in the culture of cold-water marine fish is rapidly growing, with much ongoing research into the development of this area. This important and timely book reviews the current and potential future situation concerning the major exploited marine fish species, such as cod, haddock, hake, wolf-fish, halibut, turbot and sole. The editors of Culture of Cold-Water Marine Fish have drawn together and carefully edited chapters from a wide range of international scientists. The contents list includes detailed reviews of abiotic factors, microbial interactions, prophylaxis and disease, live food and first feeding technologies, brood stock and egg production, functional development, weaning and nursery, on-growing to market size, status and perspectives for the species covered, stock enhancement and sea ranching, and an analysis of the finances, economics and markets for the fish species used in marine aquaculture. Culture of Cold-Water Marine Fish is an essential purchase for personnel involved in marine aquaculture, whether managing fish farms, supplying equipment and feed to the industry, or researching, studying or teaching the subject. Marine biologists, fisheries scientists, fish biologists, ecologists and environmental scientists will all find much of use and interest in this timely book. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where these subjects are studied and taught should have copies.
