Book Oceanography and Marine Biology

Download or read book Oceanography and Marine Biology written by S. J. Hawkins and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oceanography and Marine Biology: An Annual Review remains one of the most cited sources in marine science and oceanography. The ever-increasing interest in work in oceanography and marine biology and its relevance to global environmental issues, especially global climate change and its impacts, creates a demand for authoritative refereed reviews summarizing and synthesizing the results of recent research. For more than 50 years, OMBAR has been an essential reference for research workers and students in all fields of marine science. If you are interested in submitting a review for consideration for publication in OMBAR, please email the Editor in Chief, Stephen Hawkins, at [email protected]. This volume considers such diverse topics as optimal design for ecosystem-level ocean observatories, the oceanography and ecology of Ningaloo, human pressures and the emergence of novel marine ecosystems and priority species to support the functional integrity of coral reefs. Six of the nine peer-reviewed contributions in Volume 58 are available to read Open Access via the links on the Routledge.com webpage. An international Editorial Board ensures global relevance and expert peer review, with editors from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Singapore, South Africa and the United Kingdom. The series volumes find a place in the libraries of not only marine laboratories and oceanographic institutes, but also universities worldwide. Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 of this book are freely available as downloadable Open Access PDFs at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waste heat from thermal power generation and waste minerals from domestic sewage are polluting rivers and coastal waters. It would thus be an important step forward if these pollutants could be made productive in aquaculture. The proposal to call a meeting of experts on Waste Heat and Nutrient-Loaded Efflu ents in Aquaculture came from Dr. Ole Devik. His proposal was accepted and sponsored by the Special Program Panel on Eco-Sciences, a subsidiary body of the NATO Science Committee. NATO has extensive programs in the scientific and environmental fields, and I would like to take this opportunity to give you a short outline of these programs. Collaboration and consultation between member countries of the Alliance have been of major concern to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ever since it was established. In the mid-fifties a serious attempt was made to imple ment the collaboration in nonmilitary fields, and a report* from a committee of foreign ministers-Lester B. Pearson (Canada), Gaetano Martino (Italy), and Halvard Lange (Norway)-named scientific and technological cooperation as especially important. As a consequence of this report, a position as science adviser to the secretary-general of NATO (later changed to Assistant Secretary General for Scientific and Environmental Affairs) and a science committee composed of one highly qualified scientist from each of the member countries of the Alliance was established in 1958.

Book Key Works to the Fauna and Flora of the British Isles and North western Europe

Download or read book Key Works to the Fauna and Flora of the British Isles and North western Europe written by Reginald William Sims and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1988 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal works for the identification of all living organisms - animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, and viruses - reported from the British I sles and north-western Europe are listed in this book. The new edition has been entirely rewritten by a team of specialists. It presents a succinct selection of the relevant recent and standard literature, for use when identifying the living organisms of north-western Europe and the adjacent shelf seas. Much of the value of the work lies in its application over a wide area, helping biologists to identify rare or new records of species commonly reported in other countries. Each reference is listed with the title appearing first and the author name(s) and date appearing last, making references to a particular topic easier to find. The book is arranged under the major groups, for faster identification of specimens. With the librarian's advisory work in mind, details are provided of general guides to the fauna and flora, and the faunal lists of marine biological stations. Biologists (professional and amateur) who need to identify any living organism found in north-western Europe, and taxonomists and ecologists in particular will find this book very useful.
