Book The South west Marine Bioregional Plan

Download or read book The South west Marine Bioregional Plan written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bioregional Profile summarises information detailed in a number of reports produced for marine bioregional planning in this Region. These reports have been made available to assist in better understanding the South-west Marine Region and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Commonwealth or indicate its commitment to a particular course of action. The Bioregional Profile is the first step in the marine bioregional planning process for the South-west Marine Region. The Profile describes the geomorphology, oceanography and ecology of the Region, and identifies its conservation values. The Profile also explains how new marine protected areas (MPAs) will be identified and it provides information about the human activities currently taking place in the region.

The plan aims to strengthen the operation of the EPBC Act in the Commonwealth marine area of the Temperate East Marine Region to help ensure that the marine environment of the region remains healthy and resilient. The bioregional plan describes the marine environment and conservation values (protected species, protected places and key ecological features) of the Temperate East Marine Region, sets out broad objectives for its biodiversity, identifies regional priorities, and outlines strategies and actions to achieve these. ... This plan is for the Temperate East Marine Region, which covers the Commonwealth marine area from the southern boundary of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park to Bermagui in southern New South Wales, as well as the waters surrounding Lord Howe and Norfolk islands."--P. 1.

The Commonwealth marine area starts at the outer edge of state waters, usually 3 nautical miles (5.5 kilometres from the shore (the territorial sea baseline), and extends to the outer boundary of Australia's exclusive economic zone, 200 nautical miles from the territorial sea baseline. Commonwealth waters about the state waters surrounding Lord Howe Island. At Norfolk Island, Commonwealth waters extend up to the high-water mark because Norfolk Island is a territory of the Commonwealth. Book Routledge Handbook of National and Regional Ocean Policies

Download or read book Routledge Handbook of National and Regional Ocean Policies written by Biliana Cicin-Sain and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive handbook, prepared by leading ocean policy academics and practitioners from around the world, presents in-depth analyses of the experiences of fifteen developed and developing nations and four key regions of the world that have taken concrete steps toward cross-cutting and integrated national and regional ocean policy. All chapters follow a common framework for policy analysis. While most coastal nations of the world already have a variety of sectoral policies in place to manage different uses of the ocean (such as shipping, fishing, oil and gas development), in the last two decades, the coastal nations covered in the book have undertaken concerted efforts to articulate and implement an integrated, ecosystem-based vision for the governance of ocean areas under their jurisdiction. This includes goals and procedures to harmonize existing uses and laws, to foster sustainable development of ocean areas, to protect biodiversity and vulnerable resources and ecosystems, and to coordinate the actions of the many government agencies that are typically involved in oceans affairs. The book highlights the serious conflicts of use in most national ocean zones and the varying attempts by nations to follow the prescriptions emanating from the 1982 UN Law of the Sea Convention and the outcomes of the 1992, 2002, and 2012 sustainable development summits. The interrelationship among uses and processes in the coast and ocean requires that ocean governance be integrated, precautionary, and anticipatory. Overall, the book provides a definitive state-of-the-art review and analysis of national and regional ocean policies around the world.

Book excerpt: The world’s oceans cover about 70% of our planet. To safeguard the delicate ecological and environmental functions of the oceans and their remarkable biodiversity, networks of marine protected areas are being created. In some of these areas, human activity is restricted to non-exploitative activities and in others it is managed in a sustainable way. Australia is at the forefront of marine conservation, with one of the largest systems of marine protected areas in the world. Big, Bold and Blue: Lessons from Australia’s Marine Protected Areas captures Australia’s experience, sharing important lessons from the Great Barrier Reef and many other extraordinary marine protected areas. It presents real-world examples, leading academic research, perspectives on government policy, and information from indigenous sea country management, non-governmental organisations, and commercial and recreational fishing sectors. The lessons learnt during the rapid expansion of Australia’s marine protected areas, both positive and negative, will aid and advise other nations in their own marine conservation efforts.
