Book Dismantling the Patriarchy Bit by Bit

Download or read book Dismantling the Patriarchy Bit by Bit written by Judith K. Brodsky and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Dismantling the Patriarchy, Bit by Bit, Judith K. Brodsky makes a ground-breaking intellectual leap by connecting feminist art theory with the rise of digital art. Technology has commonly been considered the domain of white men but-unrecognized until this book-female artists, including women artists of color, have been innovators in the digital art arena as early as the late 1960s when computers first became available outside of government and university laboratories. Brodsky, an important figure in the feminist art world, looks at various forms of visual art that are quickly becoming the dominant art of the 21st century, examining the work of artists in such media as video (from pioneers Joan Jonas and Adrian Piper to Hannah Black today), websites and social networking (from Vera Frenkel to Ann Hirsch), virtual and augmented reality art (Jenny Holzer to Hyphen-Lab), and art using artificial intelligence. She also documents the work of female-identifying, queer, transgender, and Black and brown artists including Legacy Russell and Micha Cárdenas, who are not only innovators in digital art but also transforming technology itself under the impact of feminist theory. In this radical study, Brodsky argues that their work frees technology from its patriarchal context, illustrating the crucial need to transform all areas of our culture in order to achieve the goals of #MeToo, Black Lives Matter (BLM), and Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) representation, to empower female-identifying and Black and brown people, and to document their contributions to human history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How new media art informed by feminism yields important and original insights about interacting with technologies In A Capsule Aesthetic, Kate Mondloch examines how new media installation art intervenes in the fields of technoscience and new materialism, showing how three diverse artists—Pipilotti Rist, Patricia Piccinini, and Mariko Mori—contribute to the urgent conversation about everyday technology and the ways it constructs our bodies. A Capsule Aesthetic establishes the unique insights that feminist theory offers to new media art and new materialisms, offering a fuller picture of human–nonhuman relations. In-depth readings of works by Rist, Piccinini, and Mori explore such questions as the role of the contemporary art museum in our experience of media art, how the human is conceived of by biotechnologies, and how installation art can complicate and enrich contemporary science’s understanding of the brain. With vivid, firsthand descriptions of the artworks, Mondloch takes the reader inside immersive installation pieces, showing how they allow us to inhabit challenging theoretical concepts and nonanthropomorphic perspectives. Striving to think beyond the anthropocentric and fully consider the material world, A Capsule Aesthetic brings new approaches to questions surrounding our technology-saturated culture and its proliferation of human-to-nonhuman interfaces.

The sculptures and often spatially invasive works for Kunsthaus Bregenz, some of them new, follow this position. A selection of the collection that Gates calls 'Negrobilia', which has been compiled over the years by Edward J. and Ana J. Williams with the intention of removing these objects from the market and matter of-course visibility, is shown for the first time Contributions by Romi Crawford and Jackie Stewart broach Gates? complex Black Archive, as a critical confrontation with social and political themes. Download or read book The Conditions of Being Art written by Jeannine Tang and published by CCS Bard and Dancing Foxes Press. This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conditions of Being Art is the first book to examine the activities of groundbreaking contemporary art galleries Pat Hearn Gallery and American Fine Arts, Co. (1983-2004), and the transnational milieu of artists, dealers and critics that surrounded them. Drawing on the archives of dealers Pat Hearn and Colin de Land--both, independently, legendary players on the New York art scene of the 1980s and '90s, and one of the great love stories of the art world--this publication illustrates their distinctive artistic practices, significant exhibitions and events, and daily business. Hearn and de Land championed art that challenged the business of running an art gallery; artists like Renée Green and Susan Hiller, Andrea Fraser and Cady Noland, who employed conceptualism and installation, social and institutional critique. Contributing to the history of exhibitions, institutions and curating, The Conditions of Being Art addresses a significant gap in this literature around experimental commercial spaces in recent art history. This publication is the first book-length critical account of the alternative commercial gallery practices of the 1990s, a moment and a scene that is extremely influential to many of today's art dealers, curators and artists. Hearn and de Land's gallery practices explored new experimental and ethical possibilities within the selling of art, testing the relationship of contemporary art to its markets. In this volume, full-color images, in-depth scholarly investigations and detailed gallery histories vibrantly document how Hearn and de Land tested new notions of what an art gallery could be.

Guest edited by Pilar Tompkins Rivas, chief curator at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, "Latinx" spans a century of image making, connecting historical and contemporary photography, and covering the themes of political resistance, family and community, fashion and culture, and the complexity of identity in American life. In "Latinx," Carribean Fragoza traces Laura Aguilar's influence on queer artmaking. Joiri Minaya remixes postcards from the Dominican Republic to unveil the fantasy of tourism. Christina Catherine Martinez profiles Reynaldo Rivera, who chronicled 1990s-era Los Angeles nightlife. Yxta Maya Murry considers three Latina curators and writers influencing how photography canons are made today. "Collectively, their images cast a greater net for the multiple ways of seeing Latinx people," Tompkins Rivas notes of the issue's photographers, "creating a visual archive whose edges are yet to be defined."

Book Collecting the New

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bruce Altshuler
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2013-10-24
  • ISBN : 1400849357
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Collecting the New written by Bruce Altshuler and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collecting the New is the first book on the questions and challenges that museums face in acquiring and preserving contemporary art. Because such art has not yet withstood the test of time, it defies the traditional understanding of the art museum as an institution that collects and displays works of long-established aesthetic and historical value. By acquiring such art, museums gamble on the future. In addition, new technologies and alternative conceptions of the artwork have created special problems of conservation, while social, political, and aesthetic changes have generated new categories of works to be collected. Following Bruce Altshuler's introduction on the European and American history of museum collecting of art by living artists, the book comprises newly commissioned essays by twelve distinguished curators representing a wide range of museums. First considered are general issues including the acquisition process, and collecting by universal survey museums and museums that focus on modern and contemporary art. Following are groups of essays that address collecting in particular media, including prints and drawings, new (digital) media, and film and video; and national- and ethnic-specific collecting (contemporary art from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and African-American art). The closing essay examines the conservation problems created by contemporary works--for example, what is to be done when deterioration is the artist's intent? The contributors are Christophe Cherix, Vishakha N. Desai, Steve Dietz, Howard N. Fox, Chrissie Iles and Henriette Huldisch, Pamela McClusky, Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro, Lowery Stokes Sims, Robert Storr, Jeffrey Weiss, and Glenn Wharton.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the international art world, American Fine Arts, Co., Colin de Land Fine Art was a gallery known equally for its anti-commercial, risk-taking practices and for its charismatic owner, who championed a perennially marginalized discourse that critiqued the status quo of gallery practice. Culled from de Land's extensive archive, Colin de Land, American Fine Arts provides an incomparable look at the activities and personalities that frequented the gallery during its heyday. The photographs and snapshots are accompanied by remembrances from more than 50 international artists and writers associated with the gallery. Part personal history, part expose, Colin de Land, American Fine Arts takes us back to the essence of south SoHo during the late 1980s and 90s, serving as a testament to de Land and his loving wife, gallerist Pat Hearn, both of whom died of cancer but left a legacy of personal style in their respective gallery practices, which have since been sorely missed.

Book Rebirth

  • ISBN : 9780300196887
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Rebirth written by Miwako Tezuka and published by Japan Society Gallery. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary artist Mariko Mori (b. 1967) has transformed herself many times since her memorable debut onto the international art scene in the mid-1990s. Over the past two decades, Mori has made a significant shift in the focus of her work, moving away from self-obsessive motifs and performance pieces to a diametrically opposite approach of self-effacement. Her own image has disappeared from her Pop-oriented work, and her interest now inclines toward the prehistoric world in which everything existed in an amorphous state without text, religion, nation, or division between humankind and nature. Accompanying a major solo exhibition at Japan Society Gallery in New York, this fascinating book features over 35 immersive installations, sculptures, drawings (including many unpublished works), and videos produced by the artist between 2003 and 2012. It presents not only Mori's artistic evolution during the last decade, but also defines her current work relating to rebirth in an age of endangered environment and a lost connection between man and nature.
