Book The Structure of the Lexicon in Functional Grammar

Download or read book The Structure of the Lexicon in Functional Grammar written by Hella Olbertz and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1998-06-15 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume concern five different aspects of the role of the lexicon in the theory of Functional Grammar such as developed by Simon C. Dik and his co-workers. The volume starts off with an eminently practical section on the Functional-Lexematic Model, a lexicological and lexicographical system which has largely been inspired by Dik’s principle of stepwise lexical decomposition. In addition to a theoretical introduction to the model, applications to English, German and Spanish are presented. The second part of the volume deals with the derivation of action-nouns, pseudo-reflexive verbs and causative constructions, thus offering new perspectives on predicate formation within Functional Grammar. This is followed by a section that centres around an important problem related to valency which up to now has had almost no attention within Functional Grammar: the question of how to account for the collocational properties of predicates. The fourth part of the book discusses (non-prototypical) transitive verbs and their relation to the typology of states of affairs, which leads to proposals of possible adaptations of Dik’s typology. The final section focusses on the relationship between the lexicon and the underlying structure of the clause. Three proposals of varying degrees of radicalism are presented to reconsider this relation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Queen's Maries by G.J. Whyte-Melville is about a romance in which a young, handsome farmer falls in love with a stunning young lady in Holyrood. Excerpt: "Many a smiling plain, many a wooded slope and sequestered valley adorns the fair province of Picardy. Nor is it without reason that her Norman-looking sons and handsome daughters are proud of their birth-place; but the most prejudiced of them will hardly be found to affirm that her seaboard is either picturesque or interesting; and perhaps the strictest search would fail to discover a duller town than Calais in the whole bounds of France."

Book excerpt: Syntax and the Lexicon is a dynamic investigation into the role of the lexicon in syntactic theory. Twelve chapters, authored by leaders in syntactic theory, provide a detailed yet easily understandable analysis of differing views on the lexicon in the field. Lively debates pepper the volume with interactive dialogue, and volume editors Tim Stowell and Eric Wehrli provide an insightful overview and introduction to lexical theory. It presents an overview of the role of the lexicon in syntactic theory and debates between major practitioners in the field. It discusses the nature of argument and structure and debates the relation of argument nature to constituent structure and binding theory. It examines the role of NP-movement vs. lexical rules in accounting for alternations in grammatical functions.

Book Beyond the Anti Group

Download or read book Beyond the Anti Group written by Morris Nitsun and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beyond the Anti-group: survival and transformation" builds on the success of Morris Nitsun's influential concept of the Anti-group, taking it into new domains of thought and practice in the current century. The concept focuses on anxiety and hostility within, towards and between groups, as well as the destructive potential of groups. In Beyond the Anti-group". Morris Nitsun continues his inquiry into the clinical implications of the anti-group but also explores the concept beyond the consulting room, in settings as wide-ranging as cultural and environmental stress in the 21st century, the fate of public health services and the themes of contemporary art. Groups are potentially destructive but also have the capacity for survival, creativity and transformation. Focusing on the interplay between the two, Morris Nitsun explores the struggle to overcome group impasse and dysfunction and to emerge stronger. By tracking this process in a range of cultural settings, the author weaves a rich tapestry in which group psychotherapy, organizational process and the arts come together in unexpected and novel ways. The author draws on group analysis and the Foulkesian tradition as his overall discipline but within a critical frame that questions the relevance of the approach in a changing world, highlighting new directions and opportunities. Readers of Beyond the Anti-group: Survival and Transformation will be stimulated by the depth, breadth and creativity of the author’s analysis and by the excursion into new fields of inquiry. The book offers new impetus for psychotherapists, group analysts and group practitioners in general, students of group and organizational processes, and those working on the boundary between psychotherapy and the arts.

Book Ame Qui Survit

Download or read book Ame Qui Survit written by Mary Ross Smith and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-12-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soul Survivor explores the depths of human emotions, both real and imagined. That any I of us reach adulthood in one piece, emotionally or physically is a miracle of no small proportion. That any of us reach adulthood to contribute back to society and become highly respected in the community is truly a gift of time and place. Soul Survivor is a true story of fortitude, and iron will and looking to the future in the hope that tomorrow will be better than today. Soul Survivor is nothing less than a story of triumph. "Little Mary" Reese spent her childhood living, working and playing in a funeral home. Her mother, Mrs. Mary ("Big Mary") Reese, was well known and respected in the African-American community in Los Angeles through the operation of a prestigious black funeral home. Little Mary's story tells what really happens behind the embalming room doors- the light and dark side of life. Soul Survivor is both humorous and mischievous, and talks of sex, murder, voodoo, preachers and deviate gravediggers. Famous entertainers that passed through Little Mary's life include Redd Foxx, Lou Rawls, Sam Cooke, Billy Preston and Johnny Cochran. Little Mary was born in 1944 in the South, reared in the Southwest and was often disparagingly referred to as "high-yellow." During racial tensions of the '50s and '60s, Little Mary found her hue to be a major issue but not her only problem. Mary's mother caused her to endure life threatening situations due to her drinking and wild ways. Little Mary’s childhood experiences, the mental and physical abuse faced each day, led her to believe that her only true friends were the dead people in the funeral home. Indeed, Little Mary received a BS degree (Be Smart) at an early age. It was the only way she I knew to survive. Little Mary's story is and unlikely but revealing peek into the unexpected and in the end, truly a story of a Soul Survivor.

Book Impure Reason

    Book Details:
  • Author : W. Daniel Wilson
  • Publisher : Wayne State University Press
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN : 9780814324967
  • Pages : 508 pages

Download or read book Impure Reason written by W. Daniel Wilson and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the premise that the modem discourse of enlightenment and its self-critique began in the eighteenth century, Impure Reason provides a fresh look at the controversy through cultural, social, and political history, confronting the often abstract theories of a dialectics of enlightenment with concrete historical studies of the Age of Enlightenment. This volume brings together current research on the German Enlightenment in order to familiarize an American audience with the period that gave rise to Lessing, Kant, and Goethe-as well as to other important figures who are practically unknown outside of German studies. Leading scholars on eighteenth-century German society, politics, literature, and culture bring a uniquely American perspective to the project, with critiques that generally have not been voiced in Germany. Their essays, which represent a wide range of attitudes toward enlightenment, cover topics as varied as the debate on colonialism; the difficulties of diversity; the use and abuse of reading; male sexuality in enlightenment self-critique; medicine, patriarchy, and heterosexuality; art and social discipline; disturbed mourning and the Enlightenment's flight from the body; and women possessed by the devil. Modem critics and defenders of enlightenment who are discussed in the essays include Horkheimer and Adorno (who are themselves subjected to a genderbased critique), Jurgen Habermas, Jean-Franvois Lyotard, Manfred Frank, Richard Rorty, and Christa Wolf. Impure Reason will interest scholars in German studies, gender studies, history, philosophy, psychology, pedagogy, and other fields. The volume will also help introduce scholars and other interested readers outside the area of German studies to the particularly German tradition of Enlightenment critique and its status today.
