Pièces hétérogènes, sans doute, prélevées aux différentes strates de cette réalité feuilletée que constitue toute "institution sociale", considérée ici, selon le point de vue maussien, comme un "phénomène social total". S'agissant du divorce, cette approche s'impose, et ceci d'abord du fait de la caractéristique qu'a le groupe social qu'il met en jeu, la famille, de constituer une structure multifonctionnelle par excellence, "traversant" les dimensions sociales tant économique, démographique et éducative que religieuse, politique et juridique. C'est essentiellement sous ce dernier aspect que j'ai considéré le divorce, puisqu'il constitue un cas particulier de rupture d'alliance matrimoniale, en tant qu'elle est prise en compte et réglée par le droit. Mais, en pays d'Islam, ce dernier, surtout lorsqu'il concerne le statut personnel, est en rapport étroit avec la sphère du religieux, à travers la shari'a et plus précisément le fiqh. Vu cette double attache au droit "positif" et à la loi religieuse islamique, le problème du divorce et de sa législation constitue un enjeu politique et idéologique important, comme l'ont montré les polémiques et débats nombreux qui ont précédé et accompagné l'adoption, par l'Assemblée du Peuple, de la nouvelle législation sur le statut personnel, en 1979, puis sa remise en cause, principalement dans la presse, et enfin les modifications qui lui ont été apportées en 1985.

Drawing on methods from archaeology and sociocultural anthropology, she provides an emic characterisation of ancient kinship that relies on performative aspects of social interaction. Olabarria uses memorial stelae of the First Intermediate Period and the Middle Kingdom (ca.2150–1650 BCE) as her primary evidence. Contextualising these monuments within their social and physical landscapes, she proposes a dynamic way to explore kin groups through sources that have been considered static. The volume offers three case studies of kin groups at the beginning, peak, and decline of their developmental cycles respectively. They demonstrate how ancient Egyptian evidence can be used for cross-cultural comparison of key anthropological topics, such as group formation, patronage, and rites of passage.
