This book spells out the emotional hardships and losses we all endured so that future generations don’t repeat the same mistakes again. This book will also remind us of our older generation and the sacrifices they undertook and we must never forget their courage and heroism.

Book excerpt: The Konzentrationslager (KZ) Ebensee Concentration Camp was established to house prisoners tasked to further the research and production of the V-2 missile program run by Nazi SS Officer Wernher von Braun - an American Hero. This camp was liberated on May 6, 1945 freeing almost 17,000 prisoners. The Third Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron of the Third Cavalry Group came up the road to the camp at around 10AM on that fateful Sunday; at 2:45PM, the Third Platoon of F Company opened the gates. Unfortunately for the men of these military units, together with the U.S. Army 139th Evacuation Hospital, became phantom units in historical archives. Inside the Gates details the 139th Evacuation (MASH) Hospital’s involvement in freeing the thousands of inmates in the said Austrian Concentration Camp. Book excerpt: Consists of two essays prepared for two conferences in 1982 by the authors (a Jew and a Ukrainian), both professors of political science, which examine the perceptions of Jews and Ukrainians towards each other in an attempt to further understanding between the two groups. Surveys the history of Jews in the Ukraine, and Jewish-Ukrainian relations. In the view of Ukrainians, Jews were associated with alien rulers from the 17th-18th centuries when they fulfilled administrative and financial functions for the Polish ruling class; thus, they were caught in the middle during the Chmielnicki uprising in 1648. Jews tended to view Ukrainians as primitive peasants, and did not understand their national aspirations. Jewish-Ukrainian relations were best during 1917-1920 when the independent Ukrainian government granted Jews national autonomy. Concludes that "only when the conditions of foreign domination are eradicated, for both Jews and Ukrainians, many of the problems in Jewish-Ukrainian relations may be resolved".

Book excerpt: This book discusses the introduction of isogeometric technology to the boundary element method (BEM) in order to establish an improved link between simulation and computer aided design (CAD) that does not require mesh generation. In the isogeometric BEM, non-uniform rational B-splines replace the Lagrange polynomials used in conventional BEM. This may seem a trivial exercise, but if implemented rigorously, it has profound implications for the programming, resulting in software that is extremely user friendly and efficient. The BEM is ideally suited for linking with CAD, as both rely on the definition of objects by boundary representation. The book shows how the isogeometric philosophy can be implemented and how its benefits can be maximised with a minimum of user effort. Using several examples, ranging from potential problems to elasticity, it demonstrates that the isogeometric approach results in a drastic reduction in the number of unknowns and an increase in the quality of the results. In some cases even exact solutions without refinement are possible. The book also presents a number of practical applications, demonstrating that the development is not only of academic interest. It then elegantly addresses heterogeneous and non-linear problems using isogeometric concepts, and tests them on several examples, including a severely non-linear problem in viscous flow. The book makes a significant contribution towards a seamless integration of CAD and simulation, which eliminates the need for tedious mesh generation and provides high-quality results with minimum user intervention and computing.
