Download or read book Florine Stettheimer written by Stephen Brown and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new look at the art of one of the most charming and idiosyncratic personalities of early 20th-century New York Florine Stettheimer (1871-1944) was a New York original: a society lady who hosted an avant-garde salon in her Manhattan home, a bohemian and a flapper, a poet, a theater designer, and above all an influential painter with a sharp satirical wit. Stettheimer collaborated with Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson, befriended (and took French lessons from) Marcel Duchamp, and was a member of Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O'Keeffe's artistic and intellectual circle. Beautifully illustrated with 150 color images, including the majority of the artist's extant paintings, as well as drawings, theater designs, and ephemera, this volume also highlights Stettheimer's poetry and gives her a long overdue critical reassessment. The essays published here--as well as a roundtable discussion by seven leading contemporary female artists--overturn the traditional perception of Stettheimer as an artist of mere novelties. Her work is linked not only to American modernism and the New York bohemian scene before World War II but also to a range of art practices active today. Flamboyant and epicurean, she was an astute documenter of New York and parodist of her social milieu; her highly decorative scenes borrowed from Surrealism and contributed to the beginnings of a feminist aesthetic.

Download or read book Horses of Long Ago written by Dahlov Ipcar and published by Down East Books. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first gawky little eohippus of 50 million years ago to his thoroughbred descendants of today, here is a book about all kinds of horses—whether thundering into battle beneath an armor clad knight, prancing before carriages, plodding around cornfields pulling plows, or racing for kings, they spring to life on every page. This is also a picturesque and unique glimpse into history, for horses have been valued and used by men as far apart in space as the Samurai of Japan to the farmers of France, as distant in time as ancient Egyptian charioteers and American cowboys. In beautiful color illustrations and clear informative text, noted author-artist Dahlov Ipcar brings to life men and their horses through the ages—their customs and costumes, and the ways they have worked and fought and played.

Download or read book Maine Moderns written by Libby Bischof and published by Portland Museum of Art. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1900 and 1940, a group of modernist artists gathered regularly on the coast of Maine in a region then known as Seguinland. For photographer Paul Strand, painter Marsden Hartley, sculptor Gaston Lachaise, and others, it was a way to escape market-driven, competitive, and divisive New York City, and celebrate a new kind of American Modernism. In this beautifully illustrated book, Libby Bischof and Susan Danly explore the state's important place in the history of modern art and show how summers in Seguinland inspired a new classicism that merged the antique with the modern. They also shed light on how the various artists' experiences in the refreshing atmosphere on the Maine coast cemented their friendships, shaped their individual styles, and fostered their understanding of what it meant to be a modern artist. Published in association with the Portland Museum of Art, Maine Exhibition Schedule: Portland Museum of Art, Maine (06/04/2011 - 09/11/2011)
