Download or read book The Future of Europe s Rural Peripheries written by Lois Labrianidis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together case studies from Germany, Greece, Poland, Portugal and the UK, this book examines the contribution of entrepreneurial ventures and new technology in stimulating economic development in rural locations. It looks at instances of 'good practice' in terms of both public and private initiatives, and develops a coherent combination of policy objectives facilitating the long-term economic development of the countryside. Firstly analyzing the key causes and effects of economic restructuring currently affecting Europe's rural areas, the book then explores the consequences that European integration and 'globalization' have had and will have in future. It identifies sources of entrepreneurship and examines their distribution between different gender, age and other social groupings. The book continues to evaluate the extent to which the existing institutional, social and technological environment and infrastructure encourages and facilitates entrepreneurship.

Download or read book The Empirical and Institutional Dimensions of Smart Specialisation written by Philip McCann and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smart specialisation is the new policy approach to the development of regional innovation systems across Europe and it involves fostering innovative and entrepreneurial initiatives which are well tailored to the local context. The different technologies, skills profiles, business activities, institutions and sectors which reflect a region’s economic strengths and potential are to be fostered and encouraged to diversify in ways which also exploit the region’s linkages with broader global value-chains. Yet, the ideas contained in the smart specialisation agenda have until now been primarily conceptual in nature. The Empirical and Institutional Dimensions of Smart Specialisation draws together some of the leading regional economists and scientists in Europe to analyse how smart specialisation is working in practice. This book investigates different dimensions of the agenda as it is developing across parts of Europe from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives. The quantitative analysis examines the nature of the diversification processes undertaken by regions and the interplay between the chosen local regional development priorities and the wider global value-chain impacts of these choices. Meanwhile, the qualitative analysis examines the institutional opportunities and challenges facing policy makers and the key elements most likely to provide the underpinnings of a workable set of policy settings. The book is aimed both at academic researchers interested in the interface between economic geography and regional innovation systems as well as at policy makers making public policy decisions related to regional development at the local, city, regional or national levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book in the DARG series,Development as Theory and Practice provides the only student textbook which addresses broad contemporary perspectives and debates on development and development cooperation. It introduces the notions of development and what it means from different perspectives i.e. from the point of view of academics in the wake of the New World Order, regional specialists detached from the field, Third World students of development, and development practitioners. The second part of the book focuses on development aid and examines the changing relationship between donors and recipients, and the effects of these relationships on the wider communities in these countries, and current re-evaluations of aid in principle and practice. Development as Theory and Practice is an ideal course text for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate courses in development aid as part of degree programmes in Development Studies, Geography, Politics, Sociology and Anthropology. It will also be of interest to researchers and development practitioners and professionals.
