Book The Uncertain Past

    Book Details:
  • Author : Myles Lavan
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2022-12-01
  • ISBN : 1009302035
  • Pages : 323 pages

Download or read book The Uncertain Past written by Myles Lavan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians constantly wrestle with uncertainty, never more so than when attempting quantification, yet the field has given little attention to the nature of uncertainty and strategies for managing it. This volume proposes a powerful new approach to uncertainty in ancient history, drawing on techniques widely used in the social and natural sciences. It shows how probability-based techniques used to manage uncertainty about the future or the present can be applied to uncertainty about the past. A substantial introduction explains the use of probability to represent uncertainty. The chapters that follow showcase how the technique can offer leverage on a wide range of problems in ancient history, from the incidence of expropriation in the Classical Greek world to the money supply of the Roman empire.

Book The Polls Weren t Wrong

Download or read book The Polls Weren t Wrong written by Carl Allen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-09-24 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting poll data as a prediction of election outcomes is a practice as old as the field, rooted in a fundamental misunderstanding of what poll data means. By first understanding how polls work at a fundamental level, this book gives readers the ability to discern flaws in the current methods. Then, through specific political examples from both the United States and the United Kingdom, it is shown how polls famously derided as "wrong" were, in fact, accurate. While polls are not always accurate, the reasons we can and can’t (rightly) call them "wrong" are explained in this book. This book will equip readers with the tools to navigate the mismatch of expectations. It is not intended to replace more technical applications of statistics but is accessible to anyone interested in learning more about how poll data should be understood, compared to how it’s currently misunderstood.

Book The Jews in Sicily Volume 6 1458 1477

Download or read book The Jews in Sicily Volume 6 1458 1477 written by Shlomo Simonsohn and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2004-11-01 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume in the series Documentary History of the Jews in Italy illustrates the history of the Jews in Sicily from 1458 to 1477. It is the sequel to the first five volumes and covers the events during the rule of King John. Although John continued the policies of his father Alphonso towards the Jews of the island, there is a distinct deterioration in their position during his times. After years of incitement by the members of the Mendicant Orders, anti-Jewish riots broke out in various parts of the Sicily. The worst of them was the massacre in Modica in 1474. During that period the Jewish minority of Sicily continued to flourish economically and socially. Nearly a thousand documents, many of them published here for the first time, record the fortunes of the Jews and their relationships with the authorities and their Christian neighbours. Much new information has come to light, and many facets of Jewish life in Sicily have been uncovered. The abundance of historical records in the archives of the Crown and of local authorities compares favourably with the relative scarcity of surviving documentation in earlier centuries. Therefore, again, many documents had to be reported in summary form. The volume is provided with additional bibliography and indexes, while the introduction has been relegated to the end of the series on the Jews of the island.

Book Handbook of Social Sciences and Global Public Health

Download or read book Handbook of Social Sciences and Global Public Health written by Pranee Liamputtong and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-09 with total page 2224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook highlights the relevance of the social sciences in global public health and their significantly crucial role in the explanation of health and illness in different population groups, the improvement of health, and the prevention of illnesses around the world. Knowledge generated via social science theories and research methodologies allows healthcare providers, policy-makers, and politicians to understand and appreciate the lived experience of their people, and to provide sensitive health and social care to them at a time of most need. Social sciences, such as medical sociology, medical anthropology, social psychology, and public health are the disciplines that examine the sociocultural causes and consequences of health and illness. It is evident that biomedicine cannot be the only answer to improving the health of people. What makes social sciences important in global public health is the critical role social, cultural, economic, and political factors play in determining or influencing the health of individuals, communities, and the larger society and nation. This handbook is comprehensive in its nature and contents, which range from a more disciplinary-based approach and theoretical and methodological frameworks to different aspects of global public health. It covers: Discussions of the social science disciplines and their essence, concepts, and theories relating to global public health Theoretical frameworks in social sciences that can be used to explain health and illness in populations Methodological inquiries that social science researchers can use to examine global public health issues and understand social issues relating to health in different population groups and regions Examples of social science research in global public health areas and concerns as well as population groups The Handbook of Social Sciences and Global Public Health is a useful reference for students, researchers, lecturers, practitioners, and policymakers in global health, public health, and social science disciplines; and libraries in universities and health and social care institutions. It offers readers a good understanding of the issues that can impact the health and well-being of people in society, which may lead to culturally sensitive health and social care for people that ultimately will lead to a more equitable society worldwide.

  • ISBN : 0595217133
  • Pages : 146 pages

Download or read book Danger in the Air written by Brian Power-Waters XIII and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-03 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An enthusiastic thumbs-up to Captain Brian Power-Waters, America's conscience on air safety. Danger in the Air pulls no punches and harbors no sacred cows-assembling a convincing case that the nation's sky cop, the Federal Aviation Administration itself, has "blood on its hands" in the horrible 9/11 tragedy because of its longtime failure to require stronger cockpit doors, sharper-eyed screeners and other measures to reduce terrorist threats. Power-Waters also rips the lid off a runway-full of other air safety shortcomings that endanger the flying public every day, whether aboard a jumbo jet, an air taxi or an ultralight. Danger in the Air will make you uneasy and angry, and may drive you to scream for reforms"--Alex Michelini, former award-winning Investigative Reporter, New York Daily News; former adjunct at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. "Captain Power-Waters, drawing on his vast experience in aviation-from both the line Pilot's perspective and a very accurate and informed understanding of an Air Traffic Controller's job, brings together facts and information concerning the truth about aviation safety and the failures made by the agency tasked with overseeing it-the FAA."--William A. Faville, Jr., Former Director, Safety and Technology, National Air Traffic Controller Association."If your are interested in the inside story of the attack on America, how the Federal Aviation Administration contributed to it, how airport security is still a job, and how the FAA and airlines are fighting to extend the time a pilot is confined to the cockpit, then this is the book for you."--Carl T. Butterworth, Senior Captain, American Airlines, Retired Brigadier General, Air National Guard.
