Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret (Peggy) O'Drain lives in Richmond, California, and a retired State employee. She was a longtime tour guide and volunteer with Mare Island Historic Park Foundation. Discovery of the aging, neglected cemetery at Mare Island offered the perfect opportunity to combine a life-long interest in all things historical with an undeniable attraction to old burial grounds. Her goal is to preserve a place in history for Mare Island, with stories of those who will forever remain on Mare Island. Joyce Giles (co-author) lives in Vallejo, California, a former employee of Mare Island Naval Shipyard, and long time volunteer with Mare Island Historic Park Foundation as tour guide, docent, and manager of Mare Island Museum. She assisted Peggy in the first publication about the cemetery and after several years of seeing the cemetery in neglected stage, wanted to update the previous publication to include Section A (officer burials), and also an afterward showing the rebirth with new irrigation, fencing, cleaned tombstones, and clean up after the fires of 2019, and also an index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author brings to life the stories beneath the tombstones of one of the oldest naval cemeteries in the United States. While the first burial was in 1856, the cemetery was not declared a naval cemetery until 1858, and was closed in 1921, with a few burials of officers allowed later by pre-arrangement. These stories shared by the author do not only offer glimpses of individual lives during a specific phase of American history but offer insight into an often turbulent, shifting time of change in naval history during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Book Gravestone Choices

Download or read book Gravestone Choices written by Elaine F. Foster and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gravestones from the Mare Island Naval Cemetery were recorded, compared, and analyzed for evidence of a connection between the choice of gravestone style, material, or location with five aspects of identity: age, sex, occupation, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity. The cemetery is separated into six sections, labeled A, B, C, D, E, and F. Data on gravestone style, material, and location were collected during two public cultural resources surveys in collaboration with the City of Vallejo. Historical research supplemented the data gathered on site. Data was gathered for all 903 gravestones within the cemetery. Analysis of these data included a spatial analysis of maps pertaining to the five aspects of identity and statistical analysis using chi-square and Cramer's V to determine the level of association between two variables. The spatial analysis indicates that individuals with a monthly income of $90.00 or more as well as individuals of a higher ranking occupation were located at the top of the hill in the cemetery in Section A and the top of Section C. Section A, at the top of the hill, also contained the most youth (age 17 and younger). These data suggest these areas were reserved for high ranking or upper-class individuals and their families. Statistical analysis indicated that none of the aspects of identity had a strong influence on the choice of gravestone material or style, which suggests an equality in death regarding style and material.

  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 1440160910
  • Pages : 186 pages

Download or read book John Grider s Century written by Sharon McGriff-Payne and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharon McGriff-Payne has spent the past three years of this first decade of the 21st Century mesmerized by African Americans from the 19th Century, especially the insistent voice of John Grider. Grider captured McGriff-Payne's imagination and guided her to mine largely neglected archives to unearth and compile the stories of African Americans in California's North Bay counties of Solano, Napa, and Sonoma from the 1840s through the 1920s. Grider, a former slave, Bear Flag veteran, and hardworking everyman has inspired McGriff-Payne's research. The indomitable Miss Delilah L. Beasley has also inspired the author. Her 1919 book, The Negro Trail Blazers of California, preserved the names and deeds of many of the North Bay's African American pioneers. John Grider's Century seeks to add those black voices to California's larger historical narrative, with the message, "We were here!" "Tell my story," Grider prompted. McGriff-Payne has attempted to fulfill that command and dedicates this volume to him and the other pioneers who founded schools, formed churches and civic organizations, advocated policy, built businesses, raised families and triumphed over daunting odds.

Book Grave Misfortune The USS Indianapolis Tragedy

Download or read book Grave Misfortune The USS Indianapolis Tragedy written by Richard A. Hulver and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dedicated to the Sailors and Marines who lost their lives on the final voyage of USS Indianapolis and to those who survived the torment at sea following its sinking. plus the crews that risked their lives in rescue ships. The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was a decorated World War II warship that is primarily remembered for her worst 15 minutes. . This ship earned ten (10) battle stars for her service in World War II and was credited for shooting down nine (9) enemy planes. However, this fame was overshadowed by the first 15 minutes July 30, 1945, when she was struck by two (2) torpedoes from Japanese submarine I-58 and sent to the bottom of the Philippine Sea. The sinking of Indianapolis and the loss of 880 crew out of 1,196 --most deaths occurring in the 4-5 day wait for a rescue delayed --is a tragedy in U.S. naval history. This historical reference showcases primary source documents to tell the story of Indianapolis, the history of this tragedy from the U.S. Navy perspective. It recounts the sinking, rescue efforts, follow-up investigations, aftermath and continuing communications efforts. Included are deck logs to better understand the ship location when she sunk and testimony of survivors and participants. For additional historical publications produced by the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command, please check out these resources here: https://bookstore.gpo.gov/agency/naval-history-heritage-command Year 2016 marked the 71st anniversary of the sinking and another spike in public attention on the loss -- including a big screen adaptation of the story, talk of future films, documentaries, and planned expeditions to locate the wreckage of the warship.
