Book excerpt: During the 16th century, the Borderland between Scotland and England was something of a world apart, with its own strange laws, beliefs and customs. Young John Maxwell, Warden of the West March, did his best to control a motley crew of dalesmen and mosstroopers from Liddesdale, Eskdale and Dryfesdale among others, and keep some sort of balance with the unruly West March English. As the turbulent reign of King Henry VIII gave way to the rule of Elizabeth Tudor, John Maxwell - a loyal supporter of Mary, Queen of Scots - inevitably found himself drawn into the wider sphere of the kingdom's affairs. How he fared with Mary's suitors, courtiers and enemies, and his courtship of the beautiful Agnes Herries, forms the fascinating subject of Nigel Tranter's captivating novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide that defines the literature and the outlines the best-selling genre of all time: romance fiction. More than 2,000 romances are published annually, making it difficult for fans and the librarians who advise them to keep pace with new titles, emerging authors, and constant evolution of this dynamic genre. Fortunately, romance expert and librarian Kristin Ramsdell provides a definitive guide to this fiction genre that serves as an indispensible resource for those interested in it—including fans searching for reading material—as well as for library staff, scholars, and romance writers themselves. This title updates the last edition of Romance Fiction: A Guide to the Genre, published in 1999.While the emphasis is on newer titles, many of the important older classics are retained, keeping the focus of the book on the entire genre, instead of only those titles published during the last decade. Specific changes include new chapters on linked and continuing romances, a new section on "Chick Lit" in the Contemporary Romance chapter, an expansion of coverage on the alternative reality subset. This is THE romance genre guide to have.

Book Million Man March

Download or read book Million Man March written by Michael Cottman and published by Crown. This book was released on 2022-12-06 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A strikingly photographed exploration of the largest gathering of African American men in U.S. history—the Million Man March—and their journey to Washington, D.C. to renew their faith and commitment It was a day for men to join hands and pray for peace and self-responsibility; a day for Black men to sing, to rejoice, to celebrate each other. It was a day for Black men to cry, to share their universal suffering, to strengthen their spirits, atone, and pledge to rebuild their communities. . . . This book, with more than one hundred powerful images, chronicles an event that will be etched in the hearts of Black Americans everywhere. It is not intended to document every movement, every speaker, celebrity, or poet. Rather, it is meant to offer a remembrance of one of the most pivotal and poignant moments in American history. It is a commemorative account of Black men who answered a call for self-examination and to reaffirm their values of family, faith, and community. Think of it as a snapshot of, perhaps, the most inspiring, spiritually uplifting, and socially profound moment of our time. Cherish and reflect on this chronicle, which records the natural alliance and self-liberation of more than one million men. Share in the celebration of a vast grassroots movement, and help preserve the spirit of the Million Man March.

Book The Ladies Repository

Download or read book The Ladies Repository written by and published by . This book was released on 1859 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of this women's magazine originated with Samuel Williams, a Cincinnati Methodist, who thought that Christian women needed a magazine less worldly than Godey's Lady's Book and Snowden's Lady's Companion. Written largely by ministers, this exceptionally well-printed little magazine contained well-written essays of a moral character, plenty of poetry, articles on historical and scientific matters, and book reviews. Among western writers were Alice Cary, who contributed over a hundred sketches and poems, her sister Phoebe Cary, Otway Curry, Moncure D. Conway, and Joshua R. Giddings; and New England contributors included Mrs. Lydia Sigourney, Hannah F. Gould, and Julia C.R Dorr. By 1851, each issue published a peice of music and two steel plates, usually landscapes or portraits. When Davis E. Clark took over the editorship in 1853, the magazine became brighter and attained a circulation of 40,000. Unlike his predecessors, Clark included fictional pieces and made the Repository a magazine for the whole family. After the war it began to decline and in 1876 was replaced by the National Repository. The Ladies' Repository was an excellent representative of the Methodist mind and heart. Its essays, sketches, and poems, its good steel engravings, and its moral tone gave it a charm all its own. -- Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
