Book Marauder Man

Download or read book Marauder Man written by Kenneth T. Brown and published by iBooks. This book was released on 2004-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Troop, supply and armor convoys, bridges, road and rail networks were all fair game for the low-flying Marauder B-26 medium bomber. But flying below 12,000 feet against enemy positions had its cost. This is the moving account of one man's experiences in the tactical air war over Europe in World War II. A Quaker by birth and a pacifist by nature, author Ken Brown nonetheless felt it his duty to enlist in the fight against fascism. Little did he expect that he would find himself in the plexiglass nose of a low-flying Marauder, surrounded by enemy anti-aircraft flak bursts. "Marauder Man is also an important historical record of one of the most remarkable and unsung American warplanes in World War II--the Marauder B-26 medium bomber that, in the words of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, "made possible the decision to land on continent." In vivid prose, Ken Brown brings the thrilling story of the B-26 and the men who flew it, to life.

Book excerpt: Even today the Martin B-26 Marauder continues to look sleek and streamlined. Although receiving less wartime publicity than America's other medium of WWII, the B-25, in the European theater the B-26 delivered twice the tonnage of bombs and had a lower loss rate. This volume explores the history of this oft-overlooked but widely used aircraft. The story of this historic medium bomber is told through carefully researched archival photos, as well as photographs of preserved examples, illuminated through detailed captions, thereby illustrating not only the use of the Marauder, but also the details of its construction. Large, clear photos, coupled with descriptive and informative captions, put the reader on the airfield and in the sky with this historic aircraft. Part of the Legends of Warfare series.

Book Flying the B 26 Marauder Over Europe

Download or read book Flying the B 26 Marauder Over Europe written by Carl H. Moore and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-05-21 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the story of my experiences with the medium bomber designated by the Army as a B-26 and named by the British the Marauder. The book includes a history of the development of the plane. My war experience began with ferrying our Marauder to England, which included a Sahara Desert stretch from Dakar to Marrakesh. Less than a third of the way there we lost the right engine but flew on safely on one engine, making an emergency landing at the oasis village of Tindouf, an old French Foreign Legion base. The Marauders were involved in the tragic, low-level mission over the E-boat pens in Holland where 60 percent of the officers and airmen and all ten aircraft were lost. This mission resulted in a reconsideration of low level operations in Europe (decision: move to medium altitude). My journal entries were created after each mission and offer details (target, date, crew members, their emotions, action narrative) of 50 combat missions (Appendix A). Considerable background on the design and construction of the Marauder is included, as well as a description of the B-26 reconstructed by the Confederate (now: Commemorative) Air Force. The book ends with a description of each of the crew members and their activity since the war if available."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The torpedo-bomber was a very short-lived weapon system, operational for scarcely half a century from just prior WWI to the 1960s. Yet during its brief existence it transformed naval warfare, extending the ship-killing range of ships and coastal defences to hundreds of miles. The Royal Navy and Fleet Air Arm led the way, recording the first sinking of a ship by aerial torpedo in August 1915 but all major navies eagerly developed their own torpedo bomber forces. The torpedo-bomber reached its zenith in WWII, particularly from 1940-42, with notable successes at the Battle of Taranto, the sinking of the Bismarck and Pearl Harbor. It was the weapon of choice for both the US and Japanese in the big Pacific battles such as Midway. In the latter stages of the war, increasingly effective anti-aircraft fire and interceptor aircraft started to render it obsolete, a process completed post-war by long-range anti-ship missiles. Jean-Denis Lepage traces the development of torpedo bombers worldwide, describing their tactics, operational history and the aircraft themselves, including such well-loved types as the Swordfish, Beaufighter and Avenger. Over 300 aircraft are beautifully illustrated.

Book B 26 Marauder Units of the Eighth and Ninth Air Forces

Download or read book B 26 Marauder Units of the Eighth and Ninth Air Forces written by Jerry Scutts and published by Osprey Publishing. This book was released on 1997-05-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The medium bomber 'workhorse' of the Ninth Air Force, Martin's much-maligned B-26 Marauder recovered from its poor start with the Eighth Air Force to go on and equip no less than eight bomber groups in the ETO. Although initially dubbed 'the widow maker', a change of tactics from low- to medium-level bombing for the Marauder soon improved the crews' chances of survival – indeed, by war's end it boasted a lower loss-per-sortie ratio than any other twin-engined bomber in the USAAF. This volume covers all aspects of Marauder operations in Western Europe during World War II (1939-1945), featuring first hand accounts from surviving B-26 crews, plus an analysis of the tactics employed.

Book excerpt: The B-26 Marauder was a formidable weapon in the campaign to defeat Hitler's armies, and, in the words of his first copilot, "Louis Rehr "was the best there was" flying it. This memoir, which benefits from forty years of research on the combat history of the B-26, contributions from comrades, and an extensive collection of rare photographs, describes Rehr's experiences, including five night-bombing missions he volunteered to fly in 1944 and accounts of attacks by Me-262 jets in late April of 1945. Rehr, a squadron commander with the 323rd Bombardment Group, earned 12 air medals, five battle stars, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, and the Croix de Guerre with Silver Star.
