Book Marathon Marriage

Download or read book Marathon Marriage written by M. F. Kenny and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true life story of James and Ellen Kenny (McEntyre) who were married in January 1915, raised five children and survived together in marriage until January 1987 - truly a marathon marriage. BookView Ireland Marathon Marriage By M.F. Kenny Michael Kenny's book about his parents, James and Ellen Kenny, is a ramble through Ireland in the 20th century, a story centred on Banagher in Co. Offaly but also encompassing Limerick, Tipperary, Cavan and Galway. James and Ellen were married for an incredible seventy-two years and appeared on Gay Byrne's Late Late Show in the mid-1980s after having won the prize of being the oldest couple with an account with the Bank of Ireland. It is indicative of James Kenny's patriarchal and dictatorial way that it was only then that his family discovered that the pair had been married in secret and lived apart for the first year of their married life. Kenny has a conversational style of writing about his family, interspersed with historical details which take him off at a tangent at various points in the narrative. What comes over the most strongly, however, is the way in which his father treated himself and his three brothers, giving them neither responsibility nor salaries though all four were involved in the various family businesses. James was an entrepreneur without the astuteness necessary for business and often made wrong decisions, but would never admit to them. Michael Kenny claims that the only person for whom James had any feelings was his wife Ellen, for he barely tolerated his children. The author describes how his father totally ruled the household, where his word was law. Some of his actions are inexplicable; he refused medical aid to his son Shem who had fallen from the top of scaffolding, and went to the pub while the rest of his family attended the funeral of his grandchild. For all his harshness, when his father died Michael reports that he "had a good cry for a great father whose likes I will never see again". This is a story of one family, packed with detail and neatly fitted into the context of both time and place which makes it a fascinating account. The title I had assumed referred simply to the length of the marriage but I believe that, despite the obvious love between the pair, it truly was a marathon for James' long-suffering wife Ellen. Book Pride and a Daily Marathon

Download or read book Pride and a Daily Marathon written by Jonathan Cole and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1995-07-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of 19, Ian Waterman was suddenly struck down at work by a rare neurological illness that deprived him of all sensation below the neck. He fell on the floor in a heap, unable to stand or control his limbs, having lost the sense of joint position and proprioception, of that "sixth sense" of his body in space, which we all take for granted. After months in a neurological ward he was judged incurable and condemned to a life of wheelchair dependence. This is the first U.S. publication of a remarkable book by his physician, Jonathan Cole. It tells the compelling story, including a clear clinical description of a rare condition, of how Waterman reclaimed a life of full mobility against all expectations, by mental effort and sheer courage. Cole describes how Waterman gradually adapted to his strange condition. As the doctors had predicted, there was no neurological recovery. He had to monitor every movement by sight to work out where his limbs were, since he had no feedback from his peripheral nerves. But with astonishing persistence Waterman developed elaborate tricks and strategies to control his movements, enabling him to cope not only with the day-to-day problems of living, but even with the challenges of work, love, and marriage.

Book The Wholehearted Marriage

Download or read book The Wholehearted Marriage written by Greg Smalley and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wholehearted Marriage offers practical tools for helping couples keep a passionate connection with one another and understand the role their hearts play in their lives. Drs. Smalley and Stoever maintain that circumstances, such as busy lifestyles, differences between spouses, personal baggage, the loss of a loved one, childhood trauma, etc., trigger reactions that condition us to close up our hearts for protection, blocking the flow of love. A disengaged, protected heart makes it impossible to experience an intimate, connected marriage. As a result, couples drift apart, trying to find some version of contentment, or they give up altogether and look for love somewhere else. Through their experiences in marriage counseling, Drs. Smalley and Stoever discovered that the commonly heard phrase "I don't love him/her anymore" is merely a camouflaged misunderstanding about what true love is and God's design for it. They affirm that love is more than just a feeling, and that to have true, lasting intimacy, couples need to learn to love wholeheartedly.

This book offers a fresh perspective on marriage and family living, supported by a bibliography of almost 120 recently published sources. The Handbook features two unique sections at the end of each chapter: 1. “Listen to the Lady” offers a woman’s reflection on the topics; her thoughts enrich and illustrate the chapter’s content in a unique way. 2. “Deal with It,” a four-part application section at the end of each chapter, invites the reader to grow as a husband and father by reading additional sources, thinking-reflecting on their content, and then praying about, and acting on, the chapter’s primary message. Both authors firmly believe that Christian homes should be places of laughter, joy, and growth as men of God constantly pursue the treasure they already hold.
