Book Once Upon an Algorithm

Download or read book Once Upon an Algorithm written by Martin Erwig and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This easy-to-follow introduction to computer science reveals how familiar stories like Hansel and Gretel, Sherlock Holmes, and Harry Potter illustrate the concepts and everyday relevance of computing. Picture a computer scientist, staring at a screen and clicking away frantically on a keyboard, hacking into a system, or perhaps developing an app. Now delete that picture. In Once Upon an Algorithm, Martin Erwig explains computation as something that takes place beyond electronic computers, and computer science as the study of systematic problem solving. Erwig points out that many daily activities involve problem solving. Getting up in the morning, for example: You get up, take a shower, get dressed, eat breakfast. This simple daily routine solves a recurring problem through a series of well-defined steps. In computer science, such a routine is called an algorithm. Erwig illustrates a series of concepts in computing with examples from daily life and familiar stories. Hansel and Gretel, for example, execute an algorithm to get home from the forest. The movie Groundhog Day illustrates the problem of unsolvability; Sherlock Holmes manipulates data structures when solving a crime; the magic in Harry Potter’s world is understood through types and abstraction; and Indiana Jones demonstrates the complexity of searching. Along the way, Erwig also discusses representations and different ways to organize data; “intractable” problems; language, syntax, and ambiguity; control structures, loops, and the halting problem; different forms of recursion; and rules for finding errors in algorithms. This engaging book explains computation accessibly and shows its relevance to daily life. Something to think about next time we execute the algorithm of getting up in the morning.

  • Pages : 172 pages

Download or read book Faith Maps written by Michael Paul Gallagher and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Each section of this book takes a major religious thinker and asks how he or she points us in the direction of Christian faith. My hope is to capture their vision in today's language and in a non-academic way. In most chapters I create an imaginary monologue: what would this "giant" say to us today? Here I try to speak to many honest friends who tell me that God is not so much incredible as unreal-simply off their map.' In Faith Maps an imaginative theologian, with a feeling for today's spiritual sensibility, 'translates' the voices of leading thinkers into a series of reflections on faith in contemporary culture. The result is an introduction to theology for students and general readers, as well as an attactive set of variations on themes familiar to specialists. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Map of the Universe: A Traveler’s Guide is being published in connection with another of author Dee Weldon Bird’s books, Connecting to Life’s Compass – You’re not lost you just think you are, which introduced Earth’s past history and why we are here. The Map of the Universe explains why so many changes are occurring on Earth and in our lives personally, often called a shift or a new paradigm. Are you ready to remember the knowledge of the universe and what it means to have a soul? These remarkable books represent your own traveler’s guide to the universe, with valuable information to understand not only the past and present, but a bigger picture of the future. You will remember who you are not just physically, but infinitely. The author’s newly published booklet Soul Disclosure: 100% Access also presents an overview into the future, and at the same time looks back at life on Planet Earth, and at the collective whole in the present. The three publications continue the journey of sharing the universe in all its wisdom and knowledge, although each book can be read individually. But when pieced together, they show the bigger picture of our connection to the universe.

Download or read book Map of the Soul 7 written by Murray Stein and published by Chiron Publications. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond summarizing the three volumes on Persona, Shadow and Ego in the Map of the Soul series, this latest book explores the entire BTS album, start to finish, revealing profound insights into the collective psyche of BTS. The title of BTS’s latest album, Map of the Soul: 7, captivates the mind with its suggestive and alluring imagery. It came as a surprise to many fans. Expected was an album that would follow upon Map of the Soul: Persona with songs about Shadow or Ego. While the new album does indeed include songs with these themes, it is much more complex and broader in vision than expected. The number 7 suggests mystery. It catches the mind’s attention with its symbolic significance. What does this number mean in relation to the idea of a “map of the soul?” This book dives into this mystery and explores the unconscious reaches of our mind. Fans of BTS from around the world will marvel at the depth of meaning in the songs contained in Map of the Soul: 7. They take the listener into deep reflection upon the meaning of striving and ambition, the dangers of worldly success, and the amazing resiliency of the human spirit to recover and go on despite the pitfalls on life’s journey. The songs themselves function as a map for souls who are setting out in life and engaging in challenging relationships. The songs are reflective, mirroring what we find within ourselves in our struggles to become and to thrive. When you stand on the threshold of a new land, it is useful to have a map as your guide. The great psychologist of the 20th Century, Carl Jung, created a Map of the Soul that many people in his time found more than a little helpful, even lifesaving. It is even more so now, for people in the 21st Century, caught in the profound complexities of modern life. Armed with this map, people are better able to find their way successfully through life’s journey. Today, BTS is putting this map into the hands of their fans. For this great service we are profoundly very grateful.

Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed exposition of the modern theory of supermanifolds, including a rigorous account of the super-analogs of all the basic structures of ordinary manifold theory. The exposition opens with the theory of analysis over supernumbers (Grassmann variables), Berezin integration, supervector spaces and the superdeterminant. This basic material is then applied to the theory of supermanifolds, with an account of the super-analog of Lie derivatives, connections, metrics, curvature, geodesics, Killing flows, conformal groups, etc. The book goes on to discuss the theory of super Lie groups, super Lie algebras, and invariant geometrical structures on coset spaces. Complete descriptions are given of all the simple super Lie groups. The final chapter contains an account of the Peierls bracket for superclassical dynamical systems, super Hilbert spaces, path integration for fermionic quantum systems, and simple models of Bose-Fermi supersymmetry. Many exercises are included to supplement the material in the text.

All the current conflict trigger points work at different levels and are operated by a mix of different interest groups, but the end goal is to ring fence the religion called Hinduism and to make it fit the Western / Eurocentric framework of Religion; else it needs to be dismantled. This book is an attempt to give a fresh Indic perspective to the religion of this land. Hence the book is titled ‘The Third Eye’ - a new vision to view Bharat; a vision that does not get confined to a right or left or centric view point. It sits above all these views; it is ‘The Third Eye’. It also symbolically represents Shiva’s third eye, the opening of which burns everything; the attempt is to burn the current narrative with the third eye so that we get to see / create a new vision of Bharat.
