Book The Quadratic Isoperimetric Inequality for Mapping Tori of Free Group Automorphisms

Download or read book The Quadratic Isoperimetric Inequality for Mapping Tori of Free Group Automorphisms written by Martin R. Bridson and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors prove that if $F$ is a finitely generated free group and $\phi$ is an automorphism of $F$ then $F\rtimes_\phi\mathbb Z$ satisfies a quadratic isoperimetric inequality. The authors' proof of this theorem rests on a direct study of the geometry of van Kampen diagrams over the natural presentations of free-by-cylic groups. The main focus of this study is on the dynamics of the time flow of $t$-corridors, where $t$ is the generator of the $\mathbb Z$ factor in $F\rtimes_\phi\mathbb Z$ and a $t$-corridor is a chain of 2-cells extending across a van Kampen diagram with adjacent 2-cells abutting along an edge labelled $t$. The authors prove that the length of $t$-corridors in any least-area diagram is bounded by a constant times the perimeter of the diagram, where the constant depends only on $\phi$. The authors' proof that such a constant exists involves a detailed analysis of the ways in which the length of a word $w\in F$ can grow and shrink as one replaces $w$ by a sequence of words $w_m$, where $w_m$ is obtained from $\phi(w_{m-1})$ by various cancellation processes. In order to make this analysis feasible, the authors develop a refinement of the improved relative train track technology due to Bestvina, Feighn and Handel.

Download or read book Geometric Group Theory written by Mladen Bestvina and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-12-24 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric group theory refers to the study of discrete groups using tools from topology, geometry, dynamics and analysis. The field is evolving very rapidly and the present volume provides an introduction to and overview of various topics which have played critical roles in this evolution. The book contains lecture notes from courses given at the Park City Math Institute on Geometric Group Theory. The institute consists of a set of intensive short courses offered by leaders in the field, designed to introduce students to exciting, current research in mathematics. These lectures do not duplicate standard courses available elsewhere. The courses begin at an introductory level suitable for graduate students and lead up to currently active topics of research. The articles in this volume include introductions to CAT(0) cube complexes and groups, to modern small cancellation theory, to isometry groups of general CAT(0) spaces, and a discussion of nilpotent genus in the context of mapping class groups and CAT(0) groups. One course surveys quasi-isometric rigidity, others contain an exploration of the geometry of Outer space, of actions of arithmetic groups, lectures on lattices and locally symmetric spaces, on marked length spectra and on expander graphs, Property tau and approximate groups. This book is a valuable resource for graduate students and researchers interested in geometric group theory. Titles in this series are co-published with the Institute for Advanced Study/Park City Mathematics Institute. Book Problems on Mapping Class Groups and Related Topics

Download or read book Problems on Mapping Class Groups and Related Topics written by Benson Farb and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2006-09-12 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The appearance of mapping class groups in mathematics is ubiquitous. The book presents 23 papers containing problems about mapping class groups, the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, Teichmuller geometry, and related areas. Each paper focusses completely on open problems and directions. The problems range in scope from specific computations, to broad programs. The goal is to have a rich source of problems which have been formulated explicitly and accessibly. The book is divided into four parts. Part I contains problems on the combinatorial and (co)homological group-theoretic aspects of mapping class groups, and the way in which these relate to problems in geometry and topology. Part II concentrates on connections with classification problems in 3-manifold theory, the theory of symplectic 4-manifolds, and algebraic geometry. A wide variety of problems, from understanding billiard trajectories to the classification of Kleinian groups, can be reduced to differential and synthetic geometry problems about moduli space. Such problems and connections are discussed in Part III. Mapping class groups are related, both concretely and philosophically, to a number of other groups, such as braid groups, lattices in semisimple Lie groups, and automorphism groups of free groups. Part IV concentrates on problems surrounding these relationships. This book should be of interest to anyone studying geometry, topology, algebraic geometry or infinite groups. It is meant to provide inspiration for everyone from graduate students to senior researchers.

Book Constructing and Classifying Fully Irreducible Outer Automorphisms of Free Groups

Download or read book Constructing and Classifying Fully Irreducible Outer Automorphisms of Free Groups written by Catherine Pfaff and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main theorem of this document emulates, in the context of Out(F_r) theory, a mapping class group theorem (by H. Masur and J. Smillie) that determines precisely which index lists arise from pseudo-Anosov mapping classes. Since the ideal Whitehead graph gives a finer invariant in the analogous setting of a fully irreducible outer automorphisms of free groups, we instead focus on determining which of the twenty-one connected, loop-free, five-vertex graphs are ideal Whitehead graphs of ageometric, fully irreducible outer automorphisms of free groups in rank three. Our main theorem accomplishes this by showing that there are precisely eighteen graphs arising as such. We also give a method for identifying certain complications called periodic Nielsen paths, prove the existence of conveniently decomposed representatives of ageometric, fully irreducible outer automorphisms of free groups having connected, (2r-1)-vertex ideal Whitehead graphs, and prove a criterion for identifying representatives of ageometric, fully irreducible outer automorphisms of free groups. The strategies we use for constructing fully irreducible outer automorphisms of free groups, as well as our identification and decomposition techniques, can be used to extend our main theorem, as they are valid in any rank. Our methods of proof rely primarily on Bestvina-Feighn-Handel train track theory and the theory of attracting laminations.

Book A Primer on Mapping Class Groups

Download or read book A Primer on Mapping Class Groups written by Benson Farb and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the mapping class group Mod(S) is a classical topic that is experiencing a renaissance. It lies at the juncture of geometry, topology, and group theory. This book explains as many important theorems, examples, and techniques as possible, quickly and directly, while at the same time giving full details and keeping the text nearly self-contained. The book is suitable for graduate students. A Primer on Mapping Class Groups begins by explaining the main group-theoretical properties of Mod(S), from finite generation by Dehn twists and low-dimensional homology to the Dehn-Nielsen-Baer theorem. Along the way, central objects and tools are introduced, such as the Birman exact sequence, the complex of curves, the braid group, the symplectic representation, and the Torelli group. The book then introduces Teichmüller space and its geometry, and uses the action of Mod(S) on it to prove the Nielsen-Thurston classification of surface homeomorphisms. Topics include the topology of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, the connection with surface bundles, pseudo-Anosov theory, and Thurston's approach to the classification.

Book Geometric Properties of Outer Automorphism Groups of Free Groups

Download or read book Geometric Properties of Outer Automorphism Groups of Free Groups written by Samuel Joseph Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines geometric aspects of the outer automorphism group of a finitely generate free group. Using recent advances made in understanding mapping class groups as our primary motivation, we refine methods to understand the structure of Out(F_n) via its action on free factors of F_n. Our investigation has a number of applications: First, we give a natural notion of projection between free factors, extending a construction of Bestvina-Feighn. Second, we provide a new method to produce fully irreducible automorphisms of F_n using combinations of automorphism supported on free factors. Finally, we use these results to give a general construction of quasi-isometric embeddings from right-angled Artin groups into Out(F_n).

Book In the Tradition of Thurston

Download or read book In the Tradition of Thurston written by Ken’ichi Ohshika and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-07 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of 16 surveys on Thurston's work and its later development. Book Surface realizable Finite Groups of Outer Automorphisms of Finitely generated Free Groups

Download or read book Surface realizable Finite Groups of Outer Automorphisms of Finitely generated Free Groups written by Christopher Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A homeomorphism from a punctured surface to itself induces an outer automorphism of the free fundamental group of the surface, an outer automorphism which can be called surface-realizable. This paper provides necessary and sufficient conditions for a finite abelian group of outer automorphisms of a finitely-generated free group to be surface-realizable. Furthermore, n.a.s.c. are given for any finite group of such outer automorphisms to be realized by orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of an orientable surface. These properties are identified by examining those finite subgroups of automorphisms which are mapped into the group of outer automorphisms by the usual projection, and making sure that the non-trivial automorphisms fix either a trivial or cyclic subgroup of the free group. Examples are given to show the difficulties in applying this method to non-abelian cases.

Download or read book Outer Circles written by A. Marden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-05-31 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a three-dimensional space; what sort of space is it? Can we build it from simple geometric objects? The answers to such questions have been found in the last 30 years, and Outer Circles describes the basic mathematics needed for those answers as well as making clear the grand design of the subject of hyperbolic manifolds as a whole. The purpose of Outer Circles is to provide an account of the contemporary theory, accessible to those with minimal formal background in topology, hyperbolic geometry, and complex analysis. The text explains what is needed, and provides the expertise to use the primary tools to arrive at a thorough understanding of the big picture. This picture is further filled out by numerous exercises and expositions at the ends of the chapters and is complemented by a profusion of high quality illustrations. There is an extensive bibliography for further study.
