Book excerpt: This volume revisits the most important issues that Anglo-American studies are facing at the beginning of the twenty-first century, with regards to both research and teaching. Given the English languageâ (TM)s status as a lingua franca, the culture that produced it, and that has been changing it, the literature written in English, and relevant linguistic and literary discourse have come to largely dominate critical theory globally. Therefore, the subjects of Anglo-American studies, and their traditional and modern concepts, must be approached from a multidisciplinary perspective, and must also be problematized in, and determined by, other spheres of the world, especially at the universities at which they are studied. This book, consequently, approaches both mainstream cultural, literary, linguistic and academic achievements and, often by way of comparison, those smaller, more distant, and marginalized fields, traditionally subordinate studies, as well as instances of cultural hybridization. Given its concern with a broad field of culture, literature, linguistics, and methodology of teaching English as a foreign language, this book consists of two main parts comprising the closest research and teaching fields; one attending to culture and literature, and the other approaching linguistics and methodology.

From the first British concentration camps to the only Nazi labour camp on British soil, and from a trench map used at the Battle of the Somme to an escape and evasion map from the first Gulf War, this book explores the cartographic legacy of 20th-century conflict, from top-secret documents to mass propaganda. These 100 maps tell many stories, revealing changing social attitudes towards the unfamiliar and unconventional, from Jewish London at the turn of the century to women in the workplace, and from the Edwardian opium trade to gay London in the 1980s. The maps cover the peak of imperial pageantry as well as rapid post-war decolonisation, and they explore technological change from the expansion of the London Underground system to 1980s computer games. This book tells the story of a 'British' 20th century, but one which has been interpreted in the broadest possible sense, culturally and geographically.

Book excerpt: New World, Known World examines the works of four writers closely associated with the early period of English colonization, from 1624 to 1649: John Smith's Generall Historie of Virginia, William Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantation, Thomas Morton's New English Canaan, and Roger Williams's A Key into the Language of America (in conjunction with another of Williams's major works, The Bloudy Tenent of Persecution). David Read addresses these texts as examples of what he refers to as "individual knowledge projects"- the writers' attempts to shape raw information and experience into patterns and narratives that can be compared with and assessed against others from a given society's fund of accepted knowledge. Read argues that the body of Western knowledge in the period immediately before the development of well-defined scientific disciplines is primarily the work of individuals functioning in relative isolation, rather than institutions working in concert. The European colonization of other regions in the same period exposes in a way few historical situations do both the complexity and the uncertainty involved in the task of producing knowledge. Read treats each work as the project of a specific mind, reflecting a high degree of intentionality and design, and not simply as a collection of documentary evidence to be culled in the service of a large-scale argument. He shows that each author adds a distinct voice to the experience of North American colonization and that each articulates it in ways that are open to analysis in terms of form, style, convention, rhetorical strategies, and applications of metaphor and allegory. By applying the tools of literary interpretation to colonial texts, Read reaches a fuller understanding of the immediate consequences of English colonization in North America on the culture's base of knowledge. Students and scholars of early modern colonialism and transatlantic studies, as well as those with interests in seventeenth-century American and English literature, should find this book of particular value.

The differing strategic perspectives of London and Washington were central to the tensions and misunderstandings that separated the two dominant powers in 1918 and determined how these two countries would interact following the Armistice. David R. Woodward traces the projection of American military power to western Europe and analyzes in depth the strategic goals of the American political and military leadership in this first comprehensive study of Anglo-American relations in the land war in Europe. Based on extensive research in British and American archives, the study focuses on Woodrow Wilson and David Lloyd George, whose relationship was poisoned by the mutual suspicion and hostility generated by their disagreements over strategy and military policy. Dreamworlds of Race explores this remarkable moment in the intellectual history of racial domination, political utopianism, and world order. Wells—Duncan Bell shows how unionists on both sides of the Atlantic reimagined citizenship, empire, patriotism, race, war, and peace in their quest to secure global supremacy.
