Two thousand adults were surveyed regarding social cohesion, immigration, asylum seekers and resettlement, multiculturalism, experience of discrimination, social and institutional trust, participation in voluntary work, economic concerns, and democracy. The findings are compared across generations and across previous years of the survey. Overall, the findings indicate that Australia remains a stable and highly cohesive society, with high levels of support for multiculturalism.

Despite significant demographic change over the decade, including population rise and increased diversity, Australian attitudes have remained largely positive.

The findings are compared across generations and across previous years of the survey. In contrast to many current commentators, the survey's findings suggest stability rather than significant change in opinion. However, there are emerging signs of increased pessimism, with relatively high levels of negativity towards Muslims, an increase in the proportion of people experiencing racial and religious discrimination, and concern at the failure of the political system.

By exploring the case of Santiago, Chile, the study is a timely contribution to the understanding of the roots of social division and the role that schools play in creating cohesive societies. The originality of the approach and the evidence presented draw on implications that should be of interest to a wider audience concerned with contemporary discussions on solidarity and its erosion by educational segregation in urban environments.
