Book Faith Based Organizations in Development Discourses and Practice

Download or read book Faith Based Organizations in Development Discourses and Practice written by Jens Koehrsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring faith-based organizations (FBOs) in current developmental discourses and practice, this book presents a selection of empirical in-depth case-studies of Christian FBOs and assesses the vital role credited to FBOs in current discourses on development. Examining the engagement of FBOs with contemporary politics of development, the contributions stress the agency of FBOs in diverse contexts of development policy, both local and global. It is emphasised that FBOs constitute boundary agents and developmental entrepreneurs: they move between different discursive fields such as national and international development discourses, theological discourses, and their specific religious constituencies. By combining influxes from these different contexts, FBOs generate unique perspectives on development: they express alternative views on development and stress particular approaches anchored in their theological social ethics. This book should be of interest to those researching FBOs and their interaction with international organizations, and to scholars working in the broader areas of religion and politics and politics and development.

Book Comparing Christian FBOs and Secular NGOs in Guatemala

Download or read book Comparing Christian FBOs and Secular NGOs in Guatemala written by Shane Glosnek and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is an investigation of Christian faith-based organizations and secular non-governmental organizations and their employees in the city of Antigua, Guatemala and its surrounding area. Differences between the two types of organizations are examined by detailing the motivations and beliefs of individual employees, and by examining the idea of a religious comparative advantage stemming from community embeddedness, cultural proximity, and employee resiliency. Qualitative interviews were conducted with employees of development organizations working in the Antigua area. This research revealed that development practitioners, whether religious or not, hold similar values that motivate them to work in development. It also revealed that religious employees emphasized relationships with aid recipients, established trust with aid recipients by relating to them through their faith, and relied on their faith to handle burnout. Non-religious employees maintained more distant relationships with aid recipients, experienced a "cultural divide," and relied on the support of their peers.

Book Mapping the Role of Faith Communities in Development Policy

Download or read book Mapping the Role of Faith Communities in Development Policy written by Katherine Marshall and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report maps the work of faith-inspired organizations in the United States that are engaged in the international development and relief arena. Secondly, the report reviews major elements in the academic and policy literature that focus explicitly on faith-based organizations and their development work. The report then describes how faith-based NGOs mobilize public support, collaborate with national governments and international institutions, cooperate with secular NGOs, and implement policy on the ground. The report's focus is on US-based NGOs that interact with national governments and international organizations across a range of issue areas, including education, health care, gender, humanitarian relief, microfinance, and the environment. Finally, the report explores emerging issues facing the faith-based NGO community, including the ethical and practical considerations surrounding the proper relationship with public authorities and the problems of proselytization when combined with development work"--Page 1.

Book Exploring and Working with Faith based Organisations

Download or read book Exploring and Working with Faith based Organisations written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world, faith-based organisations (FBOs) engage in a wide variety of activities related to development, ranging from health and educational services, disaster relief and financial aid to conflict resolution, social justice activism, human rights advocacy and women's empowerment. They contribute - both indirectly and directly - to the promotion and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Some of the world's largest development and humanitarian NGOs are faith-based. In many parts of the world, FBOs make up a substantial part of civil society. FBOs act both as service providers and actors of governance in their own right, participating in dialogue processes with bilateral and multilateral actors. Among official development donors, there is increasing consensus on the importance of FBOs in development cooperation. FBOs are seen to bring an 'added value' to development cooperation, because of characteristics such as a widespread and long-term presence in even the most remote villages; a high degree of recognition, support, legitimacy and trust in the population; extensive networks and relations; and - not least - an ability to mobilise funds and resources. This report provides a short introduction to the contemporary field of FBOs and an overview of selected EU member state cooperation with FBOs. The report was commissioned by DG DEVCO with the view to contribute to ongoing conversations within DEVCO on how to strengthen the institution's understanding of FBOs and to improve the ways in which DEVCO works with these organisations.

Book For the Love of God

Download or read book For the Love of God written by Shawn Teresa Flanigan and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Examines differences between faith-based and secular nonprofit organizations in the context of international development * Based on fieldwork and over 100 interviews with FBO staffers in respective countries Local faith-based NGOs (FBOs) are a major force in international development. Almost all religious traditions call followers to charity and non-profits are often the perfect vehicles for such work. FBOs are seen as having long-term commitments to local communities, focus and spiritual strength in the face of difficult conditions, and compassionate staff members. Indeed, there is a growing body of research demonstrating the effectiveness of faith-based health and social services. However, history has shown that religious faith also carries the potential for violence and exclusion. Especially for FBOs working in countries plagued by religious conflict, this reality can highlight dubious and harmful undercurrents in their work. For the Love of God examines the ways history and religious identity influences FBOs in Lebanon, Sri Lanka and Bosnia Herzegovina and finds that they often reinforce rather than transcend schisms found in the larger society. Based on over 100 interviews with FBO staffers in these countries, Flanigan reveals the darker, more ambivalent side of altruism.

Book Non governmental Organizations in Malawi

Download or read book Non governmental Organizations in Malawi written by M. Glagow and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of Non-Governmental Organizations in Africa has been widely discussed. Malawi like other African countries underwent a transition towards pluralism and democratization. The NGOs play a vital part in this process, especially since state bureaucracies and market mechanisms do not provide the expected development. But are NGOs really able to make up for the shortcomings of official institutions, considering the problems that still lie ahead? Taking their historical, political, economic and social environment into consideration, the study draws a picture of NGOs in Africa with all their possibilities and limitations.

Book Non governmental Organisations Participation and Partnership Building in Basic Eduation in Malawi

Download or read book Non governmental Organisations Participation and Partnership Building in Basic Eduation in Malawi written by Jonathan Joxxie Makuwira and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major purpose of the study was to critically examine the extent to which three Malawian NGOs facilitate the participation of their beneficiaries and their current partnerships with other stakeholders in the provision of basic education programmes in local communities in Malawi. The ascendancy of these NGOs in education and development has been attributed to their perceived comparative advantage over the state, including facilitating participation and partnership building among beneficiaries, reaching the poor, and cost-effectiveness in the delivery of development programmes.

Book excerpt: Religion in the development debate raises controversies. On one hand, religion is a powerful source for much of the welfare work and structural transformation processes, and on the other hand, it can spark distrust and hatred. This ambivalent character makes religion a very complex field of inquiry in the context of international cooperation but also one which deserves more attention. This thesis focuses on Swiss non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and faith-based organizations (FBOs) alike and assesses how transnational organizations who are based in Switzerland and operate in Muslim communities deal with religion and spirituality. Six organizations - one Islamic agency, three Christian agencies and two agencies without religious affiliation - are examined for their approach towards the subject. Therefore, qualitative key informant interviews with representatives of these organizations were conducted, and the insights thereof are enriched with relevant theoretical perspectives. The main findings are that religion is integrated differently into the organizations' mission and into their strategic, organizational, and service dimensions. Furthermore, religious agencies are found to experience particular challenges in the secular development sector. In Muslim-majority project countries, religion permeates all aspects of life. Regarding the spiritual needs of beneficiaries, this research confirms NGOs' cautiousness to engage with the faith of people targeted by their programming efforts. Existing faith-sensitive tools which address religion's potential for coping and resilience are discussed. The investigation reveals the necessity for continued efforts to understand in what ways religion in humanitarianism really matters and how its positive impact can be enhanced.

Book excerpt: While public-private partnerships in education in the United States have received a lot of attention, research on such partnerships elsewhere has been limited--even though such partnerships have been steadily gaining prominence, particularly in developing countries. Aiming to fill this gap, this book presents fresh, technically sound empirical evidence on the effectiveness and cost of various public-private education partnerships from around the world, including voucher programs and faith-based schools. The evidence on the impact in terms of school performance, targeting, and cost of public-priv.
