Book Mapping Laois from the 16th to the 21st Century

Download or read book Mapping Laois from the 16th to the 21st Century written by A. A. Horner and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'Mapping Laois from the 16th to the 21st century', Arnold Horner reviews and seeks to provide context for the extraordinarily rich diversity of manuscript and printed maps that record the changing political, economic and social circumstances of an Irish county over nearly five centuries. The flavour of these varied, informative and often colourful maps is captured in over 400 illustrations, among which are reproductions of six early county maps and a unique assemblage of images from the Ordnance Survey ?fair plans? of c. 1838?40. 0With a map record that stretches back more than 450 years, County Laois (formerly Leix and Laoighis, and between 1556 and 1920 officially known as Queen?s County) has a distinguished place in the history of cartography in Ireland. This book explores that record, from the first map of c. 1560, covering the eastern part of the county, through to the present century. The aim here is to draw attention to the extent, variety and interest of the maps made during a period of major transformation across the county?a period when far-reaching changes in landownership and settlement were accompanied by significant environmental modifications.

Book A Guide to the 18th Century Land Records in the Irish Registry of Deeds

Download or read book A Guide to the 18th Century Land Records in the Irish Registry of Deeds written by Brian Nugent and published by Brian Nugent. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Registry of Deeds in Dublin contains a vast repository of summaries of Irish land transactions for the 18th century. This collection is particularly important, to genealogists among others, because of the destruction of other historical records in Ireland for the same period, especially since the Four Courts fire of 1922. In this guide you will find a description of the records held there, an explanation of the different Irish land and currency units used, and a wide ranging discussion of Irish land transactions and registries of the period and somewhat later. This includes the influence of the Penal Laws, the nature of Irish marriage settlements and the economic climate and prices prevailing in Ireland in that century. Chapter 8 consists of a detailed case study that traces the history of an Irish family, the Nugent branch of Ballina Co. Meath, in order to illustrate the value of the information in the Registry of Deeds.

Download or read book Landscapes of the Learned written by Elizabeth FitzPatrick and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-15 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gaelic literati were an elite and influential group in the social hierarchy of Irish lordships between c. 1300 and 1600. From their estates, they served Gaelic and Old English ruling families in the arts of history, law, medicine, and poetry. They farmed, kept guest-houses, conducted schools, and maintained networks of learning. In other capacities, they were involved in political assemblies and memorializing dynastic histories in landscape. This book presents a framework for identifying and interpreting the settings and built heritages of their estates in lordship borderscapes. It shows that a more textured definition of what this learned class represented can be achieved through the material record of the buildings and monuments they used, and where their lands were positioned in the political map. Where literati lived and worked are conceived as expressions of their intellectual and political cultures. Mediated by case studies of the landscapes of their estates, dwellings, and schools, the methodology is predominantly field based, using archaeological investigation and topographic and spatial analyses, and drawing on historical and literary texts, place-names and lore in referencing named people to places. More widely, the study contributes a landscape perspective to the growing body of work on autochthonous intellectual culture and the exercise of power by ruling families in late medieval and early modern northern European societies.
