Book HumBus the Local Transit Guide to Rural Humboldt County California

Download or read book HumBus the Local Transit Guide to Rural Humboldt County California written by Area 1 Agency on Aging and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-10-04 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HumBus: The Local Transit Guide to Rural Humboldt County, California is a 100-page reference for navigating local bus systems. Both public and private rural transit systems are detailed for bus travelers--with and without bicycles. Social service providers and planners will also find HumBus useful for learning about how--with limited budgets--transportation systems work to cover a large geographic area despite a low population density. When compared to urban systems, Humboldt transit may be considered a step behind, but when compared to other rural systems, Humboldt transit's complexity is definitely a sustainable step ahead with keeping people connected to community services and to each other over mountains, through the woods, and along watersheds, in the northwest corner of California. HumBus is the result of community collaboration among Access Consultants, the Area 1 Agency on Aging (a1aa.org), and Redwood Coast Music Festivals (rcmfest.org).

Book Mills of Humboldt County 1910 1945

Download or read book Mills of Humboldt County 1910 1945 written by Fortuna Depot Museum Susan J.P. O’Hara and Alex Service and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sequoia sempervirens, California coastal redwood, was Humboldt County's economic mainstay from the 1850s onwards. By the early 20th century, harvesting "red gold" was the major industry along California's North Coast, with Humboldt at the forefront of the industry. The first half of the 20th century saw technological changes in logging and milling. New uses for redwood included cigar boxes, "presto-logs," and core logs for plywood. The industry began reforestation practices, growing their own seedlings as early as 1907. World War I and the Great Depression impacted the industry, as did activism to preserve the redwoods. In the 1930s, the largest stand of old-growth redwoods was preserved, and the turmoil of the 1935 strike resulted in several strikers being killed in Eureka. This book explores Humboldt's early-20th-century lumber industry and day-to-day realities of life in the mills and woods in an era underrepresented in published logging history.

Download or read book Cascadia s Fault written by Jerry Thompson and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2012-03-10 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thrillingly rendered, yet “level–headed” look at the Cascadia Subduction Zone and the devastating natural disasters it promises (Booklist) There is a crack in the earth's crust that runs roughly 31 miles offshore, approximately 683 miles from Northern California up through Vancouver Island off the coast of British Columbia. The Cascadia Subduction Zone has generated massive earthquakes over and over again throughout geologic time—at least thirty–six major events in the last 10,000 years. This fault generates a monster earthquake about every 500 years. And the monster is due to return at any time. It could happen 200 years from now, or it could be tonight. The Cascadia Subduction Zone is virtually identical to the offshore fault that wrecked Sumatra in 2004. It will generate the same earthquake we saw in Sumatra, at magnitude nine or higher, sending crippling shockwaves across a far wider area than any California quake. Slamming into Sacramento, Portland, Seattle, Victoria, and Vancouver, it will send tidal waves to the shores of Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, damaging the economies of the Pacific Rim countries and their trading partners for years to come. In light of recent massive quakes in Haiti, Chile, and Mexico, Cascadia's Fault not only tells the story of this potentially devastating earthquake and the tsunamis it will spawn, it also warns us about an impending crisis almost unprecedented in modern history.

Book Eureka and Humboldt County California

Download or read book Eureka and Humboldt County California written by Pamela F. Service and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cry amongst the redwoods-Eureka!-was the shout heard from early pioneers in 1850 as they came to settle in Humboldt County. Discovery of gold permanently changed the area's history, and eventually lead to the extraction of Humboldt's other natural resource: the "red gold" of its forests. Captured here in over 200 vintage photographs is the pictorial history of this bountiful county and its residents. As the gold fever faded in the late 1800s, Humboldt County's primary source of industry became the lumbering of its vast redwoods. Pictured here are the men and machines that felled, transported, and milled the lumber, as well as photographs of the elegant Victorian mansions of the industry's lumber barons, such as William Carson. Weaving the history of Humboldt County together are the stories of its earliest residents, including the Native American tribes, fevered Gold Rushers, the early Chinese community, railroad workers, shipyard sailors, and industrious farming families, all of whom created the foundation it prospers on today.
