Book excerpt: NIRVANA THE HIGHEST HAPPINESS is the fruit of a lifetime of meditation, and contemplation of Buddhist questions. Written in a lucid style, this book covers all the major aspects of Buddhism such as karma, meditation, the illusion of 'I', the belief in a Creator-God, the personality of the Buddha, Ambapali, Angulimala, sincere friendship, the power of paritta chanting, our debt of gratitude to our parents and Nirvana.Did the Buddha condone or condemn meat eating ? There is abundant evidence that the Buddha, when he was a man of advanced years, denounced the practice of meat eating. That is the message for posterity from the Mahaparinirvana Sutra and the Lankavatara Sutra (a Mahayana text). Vegetarianism springs from the purified inner states of loving-kindness (Metta) and compassion (Karuna).Weeraperuma has beautifully restated in his own words the 41 verses of the Khaggavisanasutta wherein the Buddha stressed the importance of leading a solitary life --- "One must be alone, like the horn of a rhinoceros".Freed from all attachments, the highest happiness of Nirvana is attainable right here and now, in this very life itself.

Book The Tibetan Book of the Great Liberation

Download or read book The Tibetan Book of the Great Liberation written by W. Y. Evans-Wentz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-09-28 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tibetan Book of the Great Liberation, which was unknown to the Western world until its first publication in 1954, speaks to the quintessence of the Supreme Path, or Mahāyāna, and fully reveals the yogic method of attaining Enlightenment. Such attainment can happen, as shown here, by means of knowing the One Mind, the cosmic All-Consciousness, without recourse to the postures, breathings, and other techniques associated with the lower yogas. The original text for this volume belongs to the Bardo Thödol series of treatises concerning various ways of achieving transcendence, a series that figures into the Tantric school of the Mahāyāna. Authorship of this particular volume is attributed to the legendary Padma-Sambhava, who journeyed from India to Tibet in the 8th century, as the story goes, at the invitation of a Tibetan king. Padma-Sambhava's text per se is preceded by an account of the great guru's own life and secret doctrines. It is followed by the testamentary teachings of the Guru Phadampa Sangay, which are meant to augment the thought of the other gurus discussed herein. Still more useful supplementary material will be found in the book's introductory remarks, by its editor Evans-Wentz and by the eminent psychoanalyst C. G. Jung. The former presents a 100-page General Introduction that explains several key names and notions (such as Nirvāna, for starters) with the lucidity, ease, and sagacity that are this scholar's hallmark; the latter offers a Psychological Commentary that weighs the differences between Eastern and Western modes of thought before equating the "collective unconscious" with the Enlightened Mind of the Buddhist. As with the other three volumes in the late Evans-Wentz's critically acclaimed Tibetan series, all four of which are being published by Oxford in new editions, this book also features a new Foreword by Donald S. Lopez.

Book Reaching Nirvana

Download or read book Reaching Nirvana written by Lars Ims and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the author, Lars Ims, returned to complete his Sanskrit studies at the University of Oslo after staying many years with his Guru, Swami Shyam, in the Himalayas, he wanted to continue exploring the awakened or self-realized state of mind in the Indian tradition. He wanted to understand exactly what the most famous of all awakened beings - the Buddha - said about how he reached Nirvana and what it was like. He studied the earliest records of the Buddha's words from the Basket of Sermons (Sutta Pitaka) and realized that at the heart of the Buddha's teachings there is a very simple path which he discovered while searching for an end to his suffering. By meditating to bring peace (samatha) to your feelings, and applying mindfulness to bring clarity (vipassana) to your thoughts, the negative influences of desire and ignorance will leave the consciousness, and their removal will reveal the true nature of the human being, what you are behind the layers of false ideas about the self and the world: the immortal element, or amata dhatu. Nirvana is the revelation or realization of this Deathless being, which was the only reality for the Buddha. Everything else was illusion. In this book the meaning of Nirvana is explained, and the techniques to reach it are described in detail. The book also provides practical advice including a guided meditation. The most striking discovery during the author's research was the clarity and indubitability with which the Buddha explained what the meaning of Nirvana is: the realization of the Immortal being as the only reality. Nirvana is the true nature of the human being behind the illusion of the mind and body. Nirvana is not emptiness: it is the fullness of you. Nirvana is not disappearance: it is the appearance of you. Nirvana is not about denying this world: it is about being wholly present in it. Nirvana is not worrying about the past or the future, but living every moment with love and awareness. Nirvana is to uncover who you are, to discover the purpose of your life. This book is about this original message of the Buddha.

Book Samsara Nirvana and Buddha Nature

Download or read book Samsara Nirvana and Buddha Nature written by Dalai Lama and published by Wisdom Publications. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The material in this volume is invaluable for those who sincerely wish to understand the Buddhist path and begin to follow it.” —Venerable Sangye Khadro, author of How to Meditate The third volume in the Dalai Lama’s definitive and comprehensive series on the stages of the Buddhist path, The Library of Wisdom and Compassion. Knowledge of buddha nature reveals and reconciles the paradox of how the mind can be the basis for both the duhkha of samsara (the unpurified mind) and the bliss and fulfillment of nirvana (the purified mind). To illustrate this, Samsara, Nirvana, and Buddha Nature first takes readers through Buddhist thought on the self, the four truths, and their sixteen attributes. It then explains afflictions—including how they arise and their antidotes—followed by an examination of karma and cyclic existence, and, finally, a deep and thorough elucidation of buddha nature. Samsara, Nirvana, and Buddha Nature shows us how to purify our minds and cultivate awakened qualities. “This book is a veritable tour de force in its explanation of the role of the mind in samsara and the realization of nirvana, which is the mind’s own ultimate nature. In its examination of buddha nature—spanning early discussions of the mind’s potential in the Pali canon through to the teachings of Dzogchen, the Great Perfection—it casts a bright light to dispel the darkness of materialism, which deludedly reduces the mind to a mere epiphenomenon or emergent property of the brain. Books such as this are urgently needed to trigger a true revolution in the mind sciences.”—B. Alan Wallace, founder and president, Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies
