Arrivando al cuore dei pilastri del TPM sarà dapprima affrontata la Manutenzione Autonoma che si riferisce alle attività di gestione e di miglioramento svolte direttamente dagli operatori e conduttori macchina e comprende la definizione degli standard di ispezione, pulizia, lubrificazione nonché lo svolgimento delle attività stesse. Attraverso l''identificazione precoce di eventuali anomalie o malfunzionamenti si vanno a prevenire i guasti. Segue il pilastro della Manutenzione Professionale che riguarda l''organizzazione della manutenzione delle macchine e delle attrezzature. L''obiettivo è quello di incrementare l''efficienza globale degli impianti e di ridurre i costi totali di manutenzione utilizzando in misura sempre maggiore la manutenzione pianificata e preventiva anziché intervenire su guasto. Infine, verrà presentato uno strumento fondamentale migliorare la disponibilità degli impianti: lo SMED.
